Even in the darkest times there will still be some good people :unsmith:

to follow up on this, this dude and his wife were both super brave and committed to hating the nazis while living in nazi germany

quote:

In 1931, hoping it would help him get a job, he joined the Nazi Party. In 1935, when he became engaged to Irma Eckler (a Jewish woman), he was expelled from the party. They registered to be married in Hamburg, but the Nuremberg Laws enacted a month later prevented it. On 29 October 1935, Landmesser and Eckler's first daughter, Ingrid, was born.

A now-famous photograph, in which a man identified as Landmesser refuses to give the Nazi salute, was taken on 13 June 1936.

In 1937, Landmesser and Eckler tried to flee to Denmark but were apprehended. She was again pregnant, and he was charged and found guilty in July 1937 of "dishonoring the race" under Nazi racial laws. He argued that neither he nor Eckler knew that she was fully Jewish, and was acquitted on 27 May 1938 for lack of evidence, with the warning that a repeat offense would result in a multi-year prison sentence. The couple publicly continued their relationship, and on 15 July 1938 he was arrested again and sentenced to two and a half years in the Börgermoor concentration camp.

Eckler was detained by the Gestapo and held at the prison Fuhlsbüttel, where she gave birth to a second daughter, Irene. From there she was sent to the Oranienburg concentration camp, the Lichtenburg concentration camp for women, and then the women's concentration camp at Ravensbrück. A few letters came from Irma Eckler until January 1942. It is believed that she was taken to the Bernburg Euthanasia Centre in February 1942, where she was among the 14,000 killed; in the course of post-war documentation, in 1949 she was pronounced legally dead, with a date of 28 April 1942.

Meanwhile, Landmesser was discharged from prison on 19 January 1941. He worked as a foreman for the haulage company Püst. The company had a branch at the Heinkel-Werke (factory) in Warnemünde. In February 1944 he was drafted into a penal battalion, the 999th Fort Infantry Battalion. He was declared killed in action, after being killed during fighting in Croatia on 17 October 1944. Like Eckler, he was legally declared dead in 1949.

publicly continuing your relationship after the nazis tell you to stop is brave as hell.

everyone should be like August, he was a good dude.

I'm amazed at Trumps ability to both be and look, weak, pathetic and fragile, and some how not lose all the people who value an image of strength from the president. Like a big thing seems to be is that people like that Trump acts tough (somehow not seeing past what is usually just grandstanding rather then actual toughness) - but how do they ignore all these little things? Like as an outsider, he seems like a bigger embarrassment then Bush, yet the right act like he's stronger.

cheating on your spouse is bad; cheating on your wife by having unprotected sex is worse; and because herpes is reportedly rampant in the porn community having unprotected sex with a porn star is much, much worse because you are significantly upping the risk you contract an STD and thereby pass it along to your innocent spouse

the porn star part is also just hilarious because he is now the avatar of the evangelical movement so it is hilarious in how much it exposes that their purported moral code is nonsense they don't actually care about

It's more that the idea of a casual sex loving germaphobe is a paradox.

Also, last post because I don't want to cause a safe sex derail, unless you're absolutely certain of you and your partner's monogamy, you should be using a condom. Even then, considering the high rates of adultery, you should probably use a condom unless you're trying to have children. Make all sex safe sex and you don't need to worry about it.

I believe herpes is hard(impossible?) to detect outside of flare-ups. It's generally assumed that if you work in porn then you have it and just deal with it.

The porn industry is insanely rigorous for testing for everything else though and the transfer of for example HIV in porn is incredibly rare.

First one is kind of debatable, per the article

"The vintage aircraft featuring German markings on the wings is usually seen in parades and belongs to the Condor Squadron club, Van Nuys Airport said. The club non-profit organization -- founded by WWII pilots in 1965 -- is dedicated to preserving aviation history."

So it sounds like it was out of a museum of sorts, not some proto-chud's backyard

https://www.npr.org/2018/11/12/665635832/democrats-say-their-first-bill-will-focus-on-strengthening-democracy-at-home

quote:

Party leaders say the first legislative vote in the House will come on H.R. 1, a magnum opus of provisions that Democrats believe will strengthen U.S. democratic institutions and traditions.

"It's three very basic things that I think the public wants to see," said Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), who spearheads campaign finance and government ethics efforts for the House Democratic Caucus. He said H.R. 1 will "demonstrate that we hear that message loud and clear."

But even Sarbanes admits the quick vote is just a first step. Republicans, who control the Senate, are unlikely to pass the bill and President Trump is unlikely to sign it. "Give us the gavel in the Senate in 2020 and we'll pass it in the Senate," Sarbanes said. "Give us a pen in the Oval Office and we'll sign those kinds of reforms into law."

The bill would establish automatic voter registration and reinvigorate the Voting Rights Act, crippled by a Supreme Court decision in 2013. It would take away redistricting power from state legislatures and give it to independent commissions.

Other provisions would overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, which declared political spending is First Amendment free speech; they would mandate more disclosure of outside money and establish a public financing match for small contributions.

Ethics language in the bill would strike closer to current controversies. When President Trump took office, he said — accurately — that the ban on conflicts of interest doesn't cover presidents. The bill would close that loophole, while expanding the anti-bribery law and requiring presidential candidates to make their tax returns public.

Seems like a good first bill if the aim is to illustrate the difference between the two parties re: democracy. Hopefully they can manage to follow it up quickly with something health care related.
