I'd imagine because video games are a pretty massive hobby that almost anyone of this generation participates in, and goes pretty hand with "very online" people. Pointing to other hobbies is a bit silly because they're so much smaller and less visible.

That said there's almost certainly aspects to gaming that "gel" with those types because it's a hobby that can be a really big form of escapism, particularly during developing years, and arguably can be a bit socially stunting and ultimately insular because you can find a crowd of like minded people and never feel the need to move beyond it, in recent years more so then ever.

I'd basically say its more the other way around: It's not that gaming attracts these types, it's that gaming can breed the kind of people that can be swayed/buy into the kind of poo poo that leads to alt-right types. It's for that reason I have some pity for gamergaters/turbo-atheists/mra-types: They're dipshits who lack perspective, maybe got the wrong idea bout things, and are now being sold what they want to hear, and can hide in an insular community.

I'd like to think it's more that the left is just doing better things with their time or reviewing games/movies rather then making lovely propaganda and outrage videos.

Weirdly I wonder if there's an avenue to passing it if Trump interprets it as a way to stop something like Florida from happening again. Until someone grabs his ear anyway.

Is there any study showing people that play videogames are more racist than people that don't? Or even that there are people that don't play videogames? It seems like a demographic like "people that watch movies" and searching online seems to say 91% of kids between the age of 2 and 17 play games. It seems like a thing that would just overlap with virtually everything.

i will note as one tiny quibble with this (which I assume that Democrats would take into account if they actually regained power and were passing bills) is that telling the Supreme Court to go gently caress itself in the middle of this bill is something that should be done in a separate bill, to lessen the opportunity to go "we strike that part down, and then we conclude we just have to strike down every last bit of it even the most entirely unrelated parts" like the conservatives tried to do with Obamacare.

Bills will need to be structured to minimize the avenue for attack by a hostile judiciary, rather than omnibus bills. For messaging purposes, omnibus bills are great; come 2020, you gotta split this up into as many bills as possible.

Florida just passed the thing that restores voting rights to felons who have served their time. I think I read it is about 1.5 mil people and they are disproportionately democrat voting minorities. With the Florida races always being so close it doesn't take many of these to show up to vote in order for democrats to win most elections there.

There's a big gap between people who play video games and self-proclaimed, capital G "Gamers". The latter have videogames as their entire identity. They spend all day online, play games for their sole hobby, and tend to only associate with people who also play games. These are the guys that end up pulling Gamergate or whatever and eventually transform into Chuds.

Video game addiction is a very real thing and really bad for you honestly. A lot of people claim it's "just a hobby", but the very nature of games leads to escapism and ignoring the real world. That is why a lot of people with severe anxiety/depression tend to get dragged into these things.

It’s because “gamer” doesn’t mean “people who play video games.” It means “people who have built their identity around playing video games because there’s a gaping hole in their lives thanks to capitalism and the wish fulfillment of video games fills that.” It’s not a coincidence that it’s mostly white men, since whiteness as a social construct intentionally obliterates ethnic heritage and other things that could fill the identity hole.

It’s the same reason why Jordan “clean your room” Peterson is appealing to them as a surrogate father figure.

Would the hobby being less mainstream actually help though? I got the impression that the alt-right problem is very much an issue of disaffected young white men. The hobby being big feels double edged: It's easier to find a sense of community and belonging and get exposed to other ideas, but it's also just as easy to find a community where you get a sense of belonging but only further insulate with ideas that affirm your worldview.

It's a good thing because people getting their rights back is good, but is it worth more than a % or two? Florida seems to generally be going more chuddy (dead even in 2000 vs. Republican lean in 2016 and today despite Dems leading nationwide popular vote). I get why you always should compete there but I wouldn't count on Florida man to save us.

That's a Biden success story.
John Oliver had a great segment last night where he played a video of the corrupt rear end in a top hat Trump put in charge of Off Shore Drilling Safety giving his cell phone number out to industry execs at a fund raiser. Not only he not have the number bleeped out but rather he repeated it multiple times in case anyone missed it.

quote:

Scott Angelle, current head of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, who Oliver showed at an oil industry conference giving out his cell phone number to industry executives and urging them to call him directly rather than text him “because text is a public record.” (He’s also shown railing against renewable energy from “the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees,” even as Oliver pointed out that energy from trees is called wood, and we have understood it’s value for literally decades now.) Oliver went on to note that Angelle’s plan to gut safety regulations on offshore oil rigs looks to save those digits-having oil execs a cool billion dollars or so, a figure Oliver calls “the most shocking ten digit number since XXX-XXX-XXXX,” the BSEE direct line Angelle so routinely gives out to his energy industry pals. Once more, that’s XXX-XXX-XXXX. Ask for Swampy.

Actual number is quoted in the article and the segment for anyone interested in chiming in regarding safety policy for offshore drilling.
