Yeah, Night in the Woods is great, and it's not surprising to me that Deltarune is reminding people of it. As Toby Fox himself said: "Deltarune is, from top to bottom, my fan tribute to Night in the Woods. It has no other artistic purpose."

Just to prove he said exactly that, here's the original tweet:

For Real: You should 100% play Night in The Woods. It's a pro-socialist cosmic horror story about living with a mental illness in a small town. Which, when you say it out loud, sounds like it's going to be a total mess, but it's all done so well that everything fits together perfectly. Oh, and the soundtrack is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZlHxcklOc4 (it was so super hard for me to pick just one song to illustrate how good the soundtrack is, because they're all stellar)

What? No, dude, you have somehow VASTLY misunderstood the message of NITW. It's not religion that's oppressing the town, it's capitalism. The game is extremely overt about it's anti-capitalist themes, that's part of what makes it so fantastic.
Yeah, what the heck. The game doesn't exactly tiptoe around its message either, the game is political as heck.

I've seen a lot of people say this but everything in the game from the setting to the themes to the characters all are extremely relatable for far more places than just the northeastern US. It's more of a rust belt type thing than a specific US thing. I'm halfway across the world and everything in the game felt straight out of my life, which is why it had such a huge impact on me :shobon:

heck, you should play through twice to see everything imo. (but when it comes to things getting #tooReal Bea is the clear winner)

If there's one criticism I have against the game it's that I think they went a bit too far in making stuff optional. You could go through the entire game and see 10% of the good stuff. A lot of the best characters and dialogue are completely missable, which is crazy when the entire game is characters and dialogue. The game doesn't do a great job at teaching the player that they can examine things multiple times (until the eye icon disappears) or that everything has new dialogue every day (including said examine prompts) so unless you're a pretty thorough player it's easy to miss a lot of the best writing and moments.

First of all: Yeah the game is 100% meant to be played twice. Both because it gives you a chance to do both Gregg and Bea's routes and because knowing later events puts earlier events into context so when you play through knowing what's coming it's an entirely different experience since you can pick up on things you never would have noticed before.

Second, in regards to a lot of the games best writing being extremely miss-able:

I'm of two minds about that. On the one hand, I like it because it makes the side stories feel really earned and special as you discover them. You learn more about the characters by caring enough to talk to them. Just like how you form relationships with people in real life. Also, since I'm the kind of person who feels compelled to talk to every NPC at every opportunity and also check every item multiple times just in case I missed something (I think I might have played too many JRPGs as a child) this all came very easily to me and thus felt extra enriching. My natural instinct to seek out dialogue was rewarded with more interesting and higher quality dialogue.

On the other hand, if you haven't already been trained by decades of role playing games to talk to every NPC in town every day and also visit every building every day and check everything you can check multiple times, then yeah you're going overlook a LOT of quality stuff. Also, the game really should of told you that hanging out with certain characters (Germ, Lori, your mom) won't end the day while hanging out with other characters (Bea, Gregg, Angus) will.

Edit:

I'm not sure if any of that needs spoiler tags? Anyway, I agree with your general thoughts (and I am also that sort of player) but it's a balancing act and I think NITW went a bit far in the direction of making things optional to the detriment of the "core" playthrough. If you just look at the bare-bones "go from objective to objective" playthrough of NITW (which is how a lot of people play) it's pretty thin. Not bad or anything, but so so much less than what it could be and I think that's a shame.

To bring this back to Deltarune, I feel like this is likely one of the main reasons why Toby Fox doesn't want multiple endings in Deltarune. You could have (and a lot of people have) played through Undertale like a standard RPG, gotten the neutral ending and put the game down, completely missing everything that is good about the game. Deltarune chapter 1 is a lot more straightforward than Undertale in a lot of ways, no matter how you play you'll get to experience basically all of the same things (with the notable exception being talking to everyone in town in the epilogue) and I think that's probably for the better.

This is not a ~Deep Lore~ question but I seem to recall the younger classroom having an investigation prompt (on the white board maybe) that said "Hasn't been used in a long time". I wonder what that's supposed to mean if anything. Like, there haven't been any children after Kris's generation was born?

Also, for some reason I loved that the stack of chairs was called The Throne of the Gods. I wonder if that will be a location in a later chapter?

This is a sin, obviously, but I do sort of appreciate let's players who make unpopular choices. Like naming Onionsan "Disgusting" (they just sink into the water with a goofy face) or telling Noelle that Susie is terrible (She's sympathetic, and then asks if you want to switch partners with her).
