The differences between the French wine industry and their American counterparts is pretty telling I think. In France, as well as most of the old world which uses their system, wine-making is highly regulated using a regional appellation system. This system ensures that if you get a bottle of Pouilly-Fume you know for sure that it is 100% Sauvignon-Blanc grown in a single town and processed in a specific way- weather varies from year to year and can affect the flavor but you more or less know what you're getting. In addition to the consistency it also helps build a much stronger tradition of wine-making that has a real sense of place (terroir). By contrast, the US is a mad Max wasteland with almost no regulation, and generally worse climate for making fine wine. Personally, I think should be working to make old-world wine more easily available but making nice things less accessible is sort of the GOPs goal I guess.
