'I Earn 40k And Live At Home, But I Still Need My Parents To Bail Me Out Each Month'

I wish I could say this was a one-off, but the truth is rarely a month goes by where I don’t ask them for money. I’m an account director at a digital marketing agency in Bournemouth, and my salary is £30-40k (a monthly average take-home pay of about £2,200), depending on how much commission I earn.

By the time I’ve paid rent, done some food shopping (I want to pay my way as much as I can), settled my phone bill and insured, taxed and put petrol in my car, there’s not a great deal left.

Is it even possible to snort a grand's worth of coke a month without your nose exploding? Because unless her parents are gouging her that's about the kind of money she should have left over.

A grand worth of coke is not a huge amount of coke, especially not if you're the kind who likes to share

If she rented in London and had a dependent she could be skint even on 40k. Living at home in Bournemouth not so much.

I think a lot of people on very good money are having to learn or relearn what budgeting is.

Edit: The good news is it's one of the things that will eventually do the Tories.

When I worked in an addiction ward I had a guy explain to me that he was spending £5,000 a week on coke so the weeks he spent in £3,500 a week rehab was actually saving him money.

Yeah 50 euro is about right for a gram here on the continent, and a gram a day isn't even close to a problem if you've a really cool personality problem.

I stayed in one of those expensive af combined rehab/MH unit in London when my council shut down all the local MH facilities but were then immediately ordered to house no fewer patients.

if all MH and addiction care looked like those places, there would be absolutely no socialised aversion to MH treatment. I had an ex-Saracans player as a skills coach. I saw a well-trained and rested staff team respond like lightning to an OD, shut down the relevant part of the building, and then have spare staff put a film on screen after calmly explaining the patient was going to be completely fine (they were, staff moved fast). They even hid all the walls and fences with cleverly planted treelines so it looked less like a hellcamp to all the patients with anxiety or paranoia.

I've seen people on slightly lower income than that merrily spend £150 a gram on poo poo coke, article doesn't reek of "has a wide variety of reliable connections" tbh

It's very obviously middle class addiction of some kind. I'd say coke because it's an upper and it gets you connected to all sorts, like people who would write sympathetic articles for people on £40K who can't handle money. Plus alcoholism can have cheaper substitutes like only drinking Frosty Jacks and hiding a half bottle under the Cistern in the toilet.

Think £40k is enough to have a good time in London even. £2500 a month post-tax or thereabouts; £1000 on rent and bills, £50/day on fun and savings

Not gonna argue it'll go a lot further elsewhere mind you

Yeah the difference between the posh, privately funded addictions ward where people have addictions to cocaine and shopping and gaming and the hellworld "Everything's getting paid for by the NHS so lets rip the piss and take whatever" Eating disorder ward is stark.

No joke, in private hospitals the consultant psychiatrists get paid per patient and get extra if the patient is high risk. There's also no upper limit on how many patients any one consultant can have nor how many high risk patients ether the ward or the consultant can have. So if one guy thinks he's the best doctor ever or just doesn't give a poo poo he can stack the wards with extremely high risk patients and provide only the bare necessities of cover and make serious money while the Nurses and Healthcare Assistants who see the patients for more than one hour a week get all the responsibility of keeping these patients alive and get none of the money. I've helped to stop or have personally stopped three ligature attempts in the past month and the attempts are only getting more frequent. We're up to 3-4 suicide attempts a week on a ward where you used to only get mild self harm every other week. All because one doctor has an ego like no other and is looking to retire a year early.

That's what outsourced NHS mental health looks like.
