It would easily have flown under the radar if it were a less important race or the race was not so close. I'm sure there were tons of cases of lost votes from butterfly ballots before 2000 that nobody noticed.

of course defund the military etc. etc. but assuming a fixed budget for "space research" from NASA, to optimize the amount of science being done within that constraint you want to go as automated as possible and remove human beings from orbit. the most useful thing we learn about having people in orbit for long periods of time is how much space totally sucks for our individual health

I guess, but research on human habitation is going to have to be done one way or another. There's no argument that long-term space habitation is going to happen, it will. Assuming we don't snuff ourselves out first likely!

The NASA budget is so small and sad, it would be incredibly easy to double or triple by just slicing a few percentage points off of idiotic mil contracts here and there.

long term space habitation is always 20 years away though, so it's not a very good use of funding right now. when the ISS program was set up in the late 90's it was with the idea that we'd be sending moon colonization missions by 2020 or so

we've learned a lot from constructing and operating the thing but the continued operation of it to do additional, marginal studies on the impact of space on human physiology (turns out it sucks) is likely not the best use of resources right now

Plus, space exploration and those "wasteful" probes/satellites are helping us understand how our universe actually works. Take a look at this bad boy being sent up to supplement images from Hubble.

I went to a symposium on what this thing is designed to do and it is loving wild. It will expand the spectrums we can capture and better map our universe and understand how stars are created and formed. poo poo is dope as gently caress.

But please Kerning, tell me how studying the underpinnings of our universe and physics is a wasted endeavor? Advances in science are often a result of breakthroughs in other disciplines. So the idea of Space Science = Bad is a really dumb take.

There's a lot of research taking place on the ISS that could not take place in any other currently existing facilities. Zero-g research is absolutely a thing and right now that's the only game in town making it essentially priceless. If you want to talk numbers about setting up alternate facilities for that research that conversation can take place, but until then what exists now is the entirety of possible zero-g research facilities.

1) I don't think anyone ever said that; the closest I heard was people speculating that she's a victim of an abusive marriage. That's not exclusive with being a racist or a bad person.

2) Ironically, getting rid of John Kelly would actually be cool and good though.

THE problem is that every county has to print their own individual ballots — or more often multiple versions for each county— for each election cycle, so there really is no such thing as a standardized ballot.

The State of Georgia did have a single team of full time ballot designers until recently and that's something makes sense and simplifies things.

the alternative is just to send up automated laboratories. there's very little need for actual human involvement in space research, the two have been entwined as a political measure to keep the dream of humans in space alive while it saps resources from robot driven research

think about how silly it would be to send a human or two along on some comet capture mission just to oversee the process. the only difference between that and sending humans to low earth orbit for months at a time to flip switches to start canned experiments is the distance involved

right now the military has a fully automated orbiter that is doing god knows what on 1.5 year missions

https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2017/05/why-so-secretive/525969/

i'm going to shut up now because this isn't a space thread and i've made my point on the differentiation between human beings in orbit and the ability to do research in space

An update from California fires: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/13/us/california-fires-updates.html

The two primary fires at the moment are the Camp Fire, in Northern California, and the Woolsey Fire, in Southern California.

Camp Fire:
120,000 acres, 30% containment, 42 civilian deaths and 3 injuries. Approximately 200 people are still unaccounted for. A little over 5100 firefighters are working the fire at the moment. Based on looking at fire detection maps, https://fsapps.nwcg.gov/afm/activefiremaps.php?sensor=goes&extent=conus , the Camp Fire appears to be spreading primarily north/north east and south/south east, away from the local population centers and heading into the national forest. So far, 6522 homes and 260 business have been destroyed, and 15,500 structures are still considered threatened. This is now the deadliest wildfire in California history.

Woolsey Fire:
96,300 acres, 35% containment, 2 civilian deaths and 1 injury. A little under 3600 firefighters are working the fire at the moment. Fire detection maps for this one looks like there are spots all around the perimeter of the fire area that could still be burning. 435 structures have been destroyed, and 57,000 are threatened.

This is something even the likes of Ben Shapiro couldnt help but comment on, when theres several other avenues the white house could pursue towards banning a reporter why do they have to just blatantly lie? Is it really that important to them to pursue some sort of "own and annoy the libs" manchild angle like some are suggesting? If so theyre going to continue to give a lot of ground and lose a lot of these battles in the future.

They take the action first then rationalize it afterward. Eventually the action has to be justified by the legal team, who tell them "no, we can't say x, say y instead."

Trump doesn't care he just does. Then everyone else has to clean up after him.

It tracks with another assessment I've heard of Trump (I forget from who who but IMO he nailed it) that he just says, does or orders people to do whatever will get him through a given moment. It covers the vast majority of angles where he appeals to say one thing only to do a complete 180 and reversal of course. In this case it would be something like nodding to infowars riles up his base and pisses off CNN but now that theres a lawsuit and he has to be an adult possibly to not immediately lose the case and perjure the whole adminstration the he karate chopped an intern line is no longer convenient. His lies seem to catch up to him faster and faster lately at least

Probably the most obvious example on record of him just trying to get through a moment was firing comey only to get Mueller on his rear end instead

This is literally how they started his term almost 2 years ago. Banning immigrants cuz they're brown, saying it's "cuz terrorism" after the fact, and getting laughed out of court because that's not how this works.

They have learned nothing.

One of the more persistently relevant comments on the Trump admin from former republican operatives was, 'the entire white house is (optimistically) B-team at best, you just can't expect anything more from people who have no idea what they're doing.'
