Why can't you guys just have an open border to Ireland?

Because then Poles and Romanians and Bulgarians and other evil Eastern European poors could fly to Dublin and then cross the border to Northern Ireland, and then be free to hop on the ferry to the island of Great Britain. Ditto asylum seekers who make their way to the EU, fly to Dublin, etc.

Yeah but what are the chances of that? Britain is a shithole and like three times the distance when compared to some nice socialist Scandinavian countries or Germany.

Nowhere in the GFA is there any mention of an open border for the purposes of trade. There really is not very much about economics in general beyond a woolly commitment by the joint Irish and British consultancy body to Do Their Best To Work In The Interests Of Everyone, Including In Both National Parliaments.

There is an affirmation of people's rights to "freely choose one’s place of residence", but given this is located in the bit about communal conflict [sic] legacy issues I feel like that was more to do with ending the ghettoisation of Catholics in NI than ensuring that farmers can bring their herds of pellet fired boilers across the border to auction.

The GFA really isn't very long and people should give it a read. What it doesn't contain (because they were considered apolitical and already-resolved issues) is as interesting as what it does contain, I think.

For some weird reason there is a degree of lingering resentment in large areas of eastern Europe, whose women still substantially outnumber their men in quite a few countries, about the Germans.

This is bullshit because the main weakness that the Brexiters had is that they never bothered to imagine what their perfect deal would look like. Their three options were either remain, no-deal or some fantasy agreement where everything is better than before but we sacrifice literally nothing.

This is incompatible with us leaving the EU and putting up a hard border between the EU RoI and the UK NI.

So, the suggestion was made that NI keep the EU rules and the border goes in the irish sea.

The DUP who are a hardcore unionist party propping up the tory government hate this idea because it puts a border between northern ireland and GB, and moves NI closer, politically, to the republic.

So the only workable solution which doesn't annoy the unionists or the EU, is to make the entire UK follow EU laws so there can be no hard border. Which functionally kills brexit. The DUP also hate this because they want a brexit that cuts off the republic from NI, which the EU won't accept. So what they want is literally impossible and this has been known for the last two years.

Thank you. :)
