Really want to understand how this came to be.

The CNN article a few pages back goes into a lot of detail. The tl;dr about it is that she was rather forceful and dismissive with Melania's staff during the Africa trip, earning the ire of the First Lady.

No she didn't, the House bill included a public option.

It was a lovely public option that the CBO estimated would do nothing and be worthless because it was effectively barred from costing less than private insurance, so she's responsible for it sucking, but not for it getting stripped out which happened in the senate was Obama's doing as part of a deal he struck with insurance companies

Sadly that is one of the more crafty statements Jr. has made, likely by accident. No one wanted Avenatti to run for anything, but because he said that he wanted to try it allows everyone to go DEM BAD.

Of course ignoring the fact that yeah, some dems are bad, which is why people on the left are supporting his arrest. Rule of law isn't a loving team game

Budget Office: Public Option Would Cost More than Private Plans

quote:

A significant factor for the higher premiums would be the fact that House Democrats included in the legislation unveiled Thursday a public option that would negotiate its payment rates with medical providers. Liberals like Pelosi were inclined to include a public option that tied its payment rates to Medicare -- this would have made it cheaper, but moderate Democrats from rural areas complained that doctors and medical providers in their regions would not be paid enough.

It would not have been better than what we got absent incremental improvements from future congresses and the door slammed shut on that in 2010 so it would most likely have just been another whipping horse for Republicans to "prove" government doesn't work.

And yeah notice the Blue Dogs were happy to murder their own constituents to keep business profits up (ironically business profits would have been better with a public option with rates tied to Medicare because they actually would have gotten business lol)

if they can hold her to sub-218 they can demand concessions, but i suspect that's all they'll do

also, at that point it does as people have noted become a serious prisoner's dilemma problem, where the first X people to defect get grudging forgiveness and a tidbit or two, and the holdouts get the enmity of the ruthless hardass who just got reconfirmed in her leadership position

We have no idea, because we still don't know how many Democrats will be in Congress. it's currently 229 - 198 with 8 TBD. 17 is in the neighborhood of mattering, though, if they actually voted against her. If they merely abstained, then no.

Here you go being all reasonable and logical about it. Clearly the correct answer it zero-tolerance for centrists regardless of the cost.

Honestly though, everything you said is pretty much 100% how it will play out I bet. Only with the added Trump interjection afterwards of "HAHA losers tricked you into picking HER again!" and all the predictable ones taking the bait.

For those who don't read, it's over the reforms to superdelegates' role.

Washington Examiner posted:

Black Caucus members remain upset with how Perez handled the historic August vote to strip superdelegates of their power during the party’s presidential nominating process. The changes block superdelegates — elected officials and party leaders — from casting a vote for any presidential candidate unless a second ballot is required at the 2020 national convention.

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond, D-La., confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the vote passed for a “combination of reasons” but the primary reason was the superdelegate reforms adopted by the DNC earlier this year.
