EDIT: Like I'm most curious about her route bc she's original for the game, so I genuinely am not sure what to expect.

Game developers in Japan have always been about anime tiddy. The PC gaming market for a long time was basically just tiddy games and RPGs-- and tiddy game RPGs, and even just in the VN/Dating Sim sphere the PC versions would have explicit CGs while later console releases would have these stripped out. PC gaming as a force in the west has had an uphill battle in Japan because by an large the PC gaming has long been seen a vehicle for porn games. By the time of the Saturn and the game this thread is about this was all old-hat even, as you can find Strip Mahjong or Sexy Horse Derby games on the Famicom and even Arcade games were never immune to having adult-oriented content as well.

This isn't a condemnation or some sort of 'those wacky Japanese,' it's just that historically there was no innocent time. Anime tiddy was always there and it was always where the profit was.

I think the point of that particular post is that this game is supposed to be an otome game, at least in terms of genre, so you'd expect it to have lots of sexy anime man-rear end (which it does in fact have!).

EDIT: Either way, update tonight. Maybe 3 hours from now, roughly.

One of the reasons I wanted you to talk a bit more about how the internal system works in the game is because dating sims, otome or otherwise, tend to work in a couple specific ways and working out which way the game works is helpful for understanding the game itself. My own view is sort of skewed as on the trashier end of gameplay I've mostly only played otome ones, but I feel like in general you can sort dating sims into three general categories:

Ones where you sort of pick your interest at the start of the game, and then during choice options you try and pick the right ones to get you the best ending with the interest of your choice.

Ones that are VN/CYOA style where choice options will give you points towards a certain interest and your ending is usually decided by whoever you have the most points for. Or you pick from all the options available and you get the ending based on just your points with that person.

Ones where you set a daily schedule or pick an option and earn points based not only on how you answer choice options, but also on encountering the various interests based on the schedule/location choices.

I'm certainly not an expert on these types of games, though, and I can think of a couple of cases that work sooort of differently not clearly defined here, but in my experience this is a good guide to sort of lay things out, again, otome or otherwise. So far it seems like we're working off some version of the VN/CYOA style I mentioned, as there have been some choices of where to go/what to do, but it doesn't seem like we're getting those choices in a consistent manner. By now also there's obviously a point system that we're managing and this game does seem nice enough to not only give us what seems like a fairly nice discreet numerical value in the percentages, but also a visual indicator when we gain/lose points. I'm not sure if we only get those indicators when we gain/lose certain amounts or if it's when we reach certain thresholds on the percent value.

As for differences between games' target audiences, I don't think otome games on a whole are that different structurally from other dating sims. Except in the case where in general a male MC is usually more allowed to drive the plot than a female one, but that's just characterization in media in general between the sexes and not really unique to dating sim games.

I'm not sugarcoating the experience: the show deals with themes of incest and sexual abuse, and comes down very harshly on both elements (though it has a surprisingly nuanced and sophisticated analysis the effects and links between the two). I've just been trying to deal with the things the game threw at me. If you all had picked Miki rather than Jury a while back, we'd be having a very different conversation: that Fencing Club thing could've led to this conversation.

In which the Protagonist meets Miki's sister Kozue and there is immediate and deeply unsettling sexual jealousy and tension between the twins that the Protagonist is completely out of her depth dealing with. We chose differently, so we're going to need to have chats on Jury's themes. Don't worry (or, rather, do worry), as Anthy and Akio's sibling relationship is an unavoidable element of the game and I promise I will talk about it when we reach it.

PS: general hint to the thread: just because you're voting for Jury now doesn't mean that you need to vote for Jury for literally every single choice option going forward. If you want to, you can...but picking Jury every time means you're not seeing a lot of what this game has to offer in terms of its plot, and Jury's pretty far removed from some of the series' themes.

oh no i didn't mean to say you were sugarcoating! and i understand not bringing it up in relation to the game when it's only been lighthearted so far. i meant more when talking about what the show goes into. half of me doesn't want to spoil things but the other half wonders if other people reading the thread who haven't watched or are currently watching the show don't have a great idea about where it will go, as a show about incest and abuse and how inextricable from gender they are. like i did.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of the shows where I always stick 'it's about the aftereffects of abuse including csa and incest' as a warning when reccing it to people. Especially since I have friends for which that's a personal topic, without even getting into how much the average person doesn't want to deal with surprise csa in fiction. What surprises me is how much that can be a surprise for people despite the show being 20 years old and relatively well-known in queer anime circles!

I think content warnings can be really useful contextually and it's fine if people don't prefer them, but I also think there's certain topics where it's not really okay to just spring it on people unwarned, even if you're being cagey about the exact circumstances and characters it pertains to.

EDIT: I've had to do that with Mawaru Penguindrum, too, and MP is generally a lot less sexually themed in its abuse exploration!

Chapter XVI: Houou City

Last time, we asked Jury why she fought in a desperate attempt to distract her attention from our obviously checking her out.

Soundtrack: Tenderness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVUHPfdrDtE

Patter Song: I was just wondering why you wanted the Power to Revolutionize the World.

I love the capitalization of this phrase. I do it, the game does it, the show's subtitles does it...

Jury: To disprove the power of miracles.

Patter Song: Miracles?

Jury: "Believe in miracles, and your dreams will come true..."

Patter Song: What was that?

Jury: It has nothing to do with you.

Patter Song: (It must be really important to her...I wonder whose picture is in it?)

Worry not, Protagonist-Us, I'm about to explain the whole situation.

Jury's really fond of us now. We even navigated this dangerous question correctly and realized that outright asking her about the locket would alienate her. Note that this attraction number does not cap at 100% and will keep going for quite some time, as you can probably guess by the fact that we're at 72% and near halfway through the bar.

This is going to be a short update no matter what, so why not just pad it out supplement it with an overview of Shiori Takatsuki, Jury's forbidden love?

:siren: Shiori Character Analysis :siren:

Shiori Takatsuki was a childhood friend of Jury's. That is all.

...OK, fine. They were more than just friends. Jury and Shiori were very close but, due to Jury's perfection in nearly everything, Shiori bitterly envied and resented her friend. Thus, when Jury started dating a cute boy on the fencing team...

Shiori stole him away, not out of any real attraction to him, but out of a desire to hurt Jury and prove that she was formidable enough to hurt her perfect friend. (I love the Red String of Fate imagery in that shot so much) It was far more effective than even she knew, though: Jury was never interested in Fencing Boy, she was interested in...Shiori herself.

Jury has bottled her emotions up into a locket that is her one great vulnerability...the one childhood crush she can never shake no matter how hard she tries.

Shiori is not a compassionate person, and when she discovers Jury's vulnerability, she's thrilled at the idea she's Jury's one weakness. The perfect Jury has a flaw, and one so easy to exploit!

Shiori is promoted from important secondary character to main character in the movie.

Many years ago, her boyfriend died saving a young woman who nearly drowned in a lake. This is a story used at various points in the manga, anime, and the movie, but with different imports every time.

Enraged but with her usual cold streak, Shiori has pledged herself to vengeance against the girl who lived so her Prince would die. Shiori develops a powerful relationship with Touga and manipulates Jury. She...is also very present in the final half hour of the movie, which I don't want to talk about at all in case someone hasn't seen it. If you haven't watched the movie, watch it.

Where, I hear you ask, is the usual analysis of the manga version of the character? Shiori was original to the anime, due to the nature of the original Jury character. Manga Jury is sort of a cross between Anime Jury and Anime Nanami...an elegant perfectionist duelist who is also madly obsessed with Touga and bitterly jealous of everyone Touga pays attention to. Once the latter half of that character was split off to become Nanami in the anime, Jury was able to become far more interesting and have Shiori as her one key weakness. Of course, the thread has vowed to warm Jury's heart and break it free of the chains of Shiori's influence, so who knows?

Shiori's birthday is February 2nd, making her an Aquarius, and her blood type is B.

End Character Analysis

OK, back to the main event.

Soundtrack: School Lyrics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=270vPdVVJ74

Patter Song: (...but I should go shopping soon.)

Start and end of the sentence have nothing to do with each other, but sure, let's go shopping now.

Patter Song: (I have gym class tomorrow, so I need to buy some exercise clothes. But, where's the sporting goods store? I guess I need someone to show me...)

Yeah, earlier we were talking about going shopping with Utena and Anthy. This would make sense.

Patter Song: (Oh, that's it!)

Figured it out, right?

Patter Song: And since she lived here before, she's got to know where the store is. Yeah, we should go together!)

:what: Well, then, shopping with Chigusa.

Soundtrack: Rose and Release

No, just because we're outside of Ohtori doesn't mean we've won that easily. Akio's domain might technically end at that gate there, but his malign influence seems to extend quite a bit further out. We're not out of the garden yet.

Patter Song: (Oh, there she is, Chigusa-san!) Chigusa-san, wait up!

Well, if we're going to do this thing, let's do it right.

Patter Song: Oh, um...We have gym class tomorrow, right? I thought that maybe we could go together to buy exercise clothes and towels and stuff.

Chigusa: Oh...? Why me?

Patter Song: Well, because I don't know where the sporting goods store is, and if you used to live here, you must know the layout of the town, right? And since it's been three years, I thought you might not be prepared for gym class either.

Chigusa: Okay, I understand.

Patter Song: Thanks, Chigusa-san!

She seems downright friendly today. And yes, you'd expect Chigusa to know what the town is like. Only three years have gone by. By the way, we're supposed to be two 8th graders (albeit one dramatically older than usual) out for a day trip to town with no adult supervision.

Welcome to Houou City.

No, silly, it has nothing to do with the Pokemon. It's the Japanese name for an Asian-style phoenix, the mythical king of the birds noted for its exceptional rarity and the good fortune its presence brings. Why would you mistake it for a Pokemon that is the mythical king of the birds noted for its exceptional rarity and the good fortune its presence brings? That's a silly mistake.

One thing I love about this shot is you can see Ohtori at the top of the hill in the background, especially the dueling forest. This entire town lives quite literally in the shadow of Ohtori.

Soundtrack: Paradise of Reminiscence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyEj0E794XQ

The town also has Ohtori's penchant for bizarre architecture.

Patter Song: Ah, here it is. It's a pretty big place, huh?

Chigusa: Hmm, you're right...It wasn't always such a big store, though.

Patter Song: Yeah...unlike me, you lived here a long time, right?

Chigusa: Yes. From long ago.

It must have had a big expansion in the last three years. Maybe it was originally a normal-shaped one-story building, but they just kept adding smaller and smaller higher stories until it became the pyramid it now is.

Patter Song: (Even though she came shopping with me like this I don't know a single thing about her. Does she have siblings? What illness did she have? What hobbies does she have? Does she have a boyfriend? I want to ask her more questions. I want to talk with her...)

Those are all good questions!

And we get to ask exactly one of them. Note this, however: it has been driven home to the Protagonist at great length that Chigusa is a woman. She is aware of this. That girlfriend question is explicitly asking if Chigusa is attracted to women.

So: do we ask about Chigusa's health? Do we ask about her single/taken status with a girlfriend, a question that kind of implies "are you available because I'm interested?" Or do we ask about her status with a boyfriend?

That would usually be all, but this week, I have a bit of an issue. The next update will be microscopic if I don't do this, so I'll just say this: after our answer to this question, Chigusa will start to leave.

I don't want to do a mini-update and then ask this, so I'm going to bundle the two votes into one this week: you also have the option of Continuing the conversation with Chigusa or Leaving. Please vote on both votes!

Until then, the Absolute Destiny Apocalypse!

I am curious if she'll talk at all about her illness. For the most part, Chigusa seems like the type of character who will talk at length about one thing to hide that she doesn't want to talk about something else, and I'm not quite sure if she does talk about it, it will even be the truth. Still, better to ask then to be left wondering.

After that though, I also feel like Chigusa is probably dangerous to stay around for too long, so we should probably part ways before giving her a chance to come up with a plot to destroy us ahead of schedule.

The third choice had to come from this girl's last living brain cell, cause it would be better to get info on Chigusa however we can. Ask about her illness and stay together.

Shiori's one of my favorites in this show, so difficult to pin down why she's cruel and abusive and yet the challenge of her being both ambiguous and unsympathetic is what makes her feel real. There is so soooo much to say about her and Juri and I'll never buy the "Juri good Shiori bad" conclusion people tend to make about them, it's too easy for RGU. Though to be fair she IS pretty wretched, and I understand where people who have personal experience with how she behaves are coming from when they don't want to engage with her character too much.

Yep, for scenes outside the school, in addition to India, there's the highway and the hotel, and, uh, debatably the bowling alley, at the least.

Although it's certainly not emphasized in any way, it's clear from the very first establishing shots in episode 1 that the school is surrounded by a city of some kind. (Thumbnails link to the Gallery at ohtori.nu)

I have the strong impression that Houou City's economy is entirely dependent on its status as the playground for the rich kids of Ohtori. Even the geography smacks of a feudal relationship: you can easily imagine an Ohtori Castle where Clan Ohtori's mighty daimyo resided at the top of the hill a few hundred years ago, with Houou as its castle town.

As for real-world locations mentioned in the show, Akio's one-off reference to Ohtori's sister school in Amsterdam has always left me craving Dutch Utena.

I think that handful of times we see characters outside the school in the series, or even how occasionally students transfer from the school AND come back for reasons that're normal on paper, are intentional for showing Ohtori as this overwhelming, inescapable presence, and not in a literal magic cursed prison sense. You could technically leave if you wanted to, but it won't mean anything when the school has taught everybody in the show what unattainable ideals they should strive for. And it allows, even paradoxically rewards, cynicism taking hold in people when they try and fail to live up to the ideal. Even the ones who leave and come back do so out of insecurity of not really getting what they want, or as a misguided attempt to fix the system. It's less like no one can leave Ohtori, and more that Ohtori can never leave any of them.

OK, last time we voted on the previous decision:

Because of the brevity of the update Because of how great the answers are, I'm going to show off all three potential answers. They're all fascinating in their own right. I'm not going to do this often, but it's worth doing for this particular update. You all voted for talking about illness, but let's get through the two elseworlds first.

Scenario I: Do you have a boyfriend?

Patter Song: Chigusa-san, do you have a boyfriend or anything?

Welp. :stare: We're going there.

Patter Song: I...I mean...

Could you have told the character designers this before they worked on your appearance?

Chigusa: I don't mean to boast, but I receive a lot of love letters. However, I've never gotten one from a boy.

Of course not. You're a student at Ohtori Academy.

Patter Song: I...is that so?

Chigusa: Yes...not a one...

Patter Song: (Chigusa-san...I wonder if it bothers her a lot? I might've asked her something bad...)

This option, far from alienating her, thrills her. I also love the little grimace she's giving in the rose gain counter. Even when she's happy with you she's still scowling.

That ends this scenario. Time for the next one.

Scenario II: Do you have a girlfriend?

Patter Song: Um...please listen and don't get upset, okay?

Chigusa: What is it?

Patter Song: Chigusa-san, do you...have, like, a girlfriend or anything?

99% of the time, you all aren't missing that much by not having the audio. This game is fully voice acted, of course, and the actors do great jobs, and it adds a lot to the game, but nothing vital. Here, however...Chigusa just nails a deadpan delivery of this line. It's comedic gold. I actually started literally laughing out loud.

Patter Song: I'm, I'm sorry! I just...

Chigusa: I'm kidding. I don't have a girlfriend.

So you're telling me there's a chance...

Never mind.

You know, you're not the first person to say that...

So forgive me if I don't believe you.

Chigusa: Does that surprise you?

That sounds like a loaded question!

Patter Song: Um, no, that's...(I see. Yeah, that makes sense. Chigusa-san looks boyish, but she's a girl. I asked a really rude question...)

Chigusa is not boyish in any way imaginable. Anyway, this route leaves no bump or subtraction to Chigusa's opinion of us. Chigusa is neither pleased nor annoyed at us for asking about her possibly having a girlfriend.

Which brings us to the actual answer the thread picked:

Canon Update: Ask about her illness.

Patter Song: Hey, Chigusa-san...You took a break from school because of illness, right? Is it okay if I ask what kind of illness it was?

Chigusa: Ah. Here.

Patter Song: Some kind of heart disease?

Goons are brilliant at all sorts of things, so I'm hoping, and this is a long shot, that someone could tell me about what sort of heart disease a teenage girl might be susceptible to and what the odds of that occurring are.

Chigusa: My "heart."

Patter Song: "Heart"...?

It's a shame her animation doesn't do the scare quotes around heart.

Oh, fantastic, thread. You already forced me to watch The Wizard of Oz again, are you going to force me to rewatch Snow White? What other classics of 1930s cinema am I going to have to watch again? I'm totally down for rewatching Fred Astaire movies, or The Philadelphia Story, so just reference them and I'll be good to go. 1930s was a great time for movies. Anyway, I'm sure everyone here knows the classic tale of Snow White. Even if you don't, I'm going to have to rewatch the movie at some point and do an entire full-length update about that film and its themes and how they're reflected in Utena but I haven't watched Snow White in a decade and I really need to have fresh eyes on it and...I'm going to need to read the original story to see how it changed when it turned into the Disney movie, and...I'm just going to keep making work for myself here, aren't I?

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (do not get on me on the spelling: J. R. R. Tolkien invented "dwarves" as the plural of dwarf in the 1940s, this movie predates it and still thinks dwarf is pluralized as dwarfs) is, of course, the first feature-length animated film, as well as the first feature-length film made by Walt Disney, and was a shocking milestone in animation in 1937. It is ranked as the greatest animated American film of all time by the American Film Institute to this day. It is the ur-text of all Disney film tropes, and, by extension, modern portrayals/interpretations of fairy tales in general. Snow White was also the first film to have its soundtrack become its own album and produced songs like Heigh-Ho, Whistle While You Work, and other classic songs you hear in television advertisements and Mormon Tabernacle Choir albums and other, similar venues for inoffensive traditional Americana.

Anyway, back to the game.

Patter Song: (What does that mean? I wonder if she means she doesn't want to talk about it...It might be best not to pry too deeply.)

Protagonist-Us is rightly weirded out that Chigusa brought up the weird Snow White metaphor.

Chigusa is not happy with us. We lost a point with her. We pried on her most sensitive area.

Patter Song: Thanks for coming shopping with me.

Chigusa: Not at all, it was my pleasure. Then, I'll be taking off here.

Patter Song: (What should I do? I want to walk around town with her for a little longer, but...)

Because the thread said we're clingy, we're going to not let Chigusa get away that easily.

Patter Song: Um...could we walk together a little longer?

Chigusa: Hm?

Patter Song: Only a little. Long enough for a walk in the park. I...um...

Chigusa: Just for a walk.

Patter Song: Ah...okay!

You did it again! You pissed her off twice in the same conversation! You all are jerks. She clearly, clearly does not want us around anymore.

Welcome to Houou City Park. Houou's clearly on the coast...you can see the shoreline at several points in the series.

Patter Song: This park is pretty big, isn't it?

Chigusa: It's the biggest park in the city. And it's in a nice central position. It's a pretty standard date spot.

Patter Song: Chigusa, have you had dates here, too?

Chigusa knows all the local hot spots. I'm sure she was quite the player.

Chigusa: No, today will be my first.

...Oh.

Oh, no...

Patter Song: (What should I do...? That's...)

Chigusa, I don't like you...I mean I don't like you like that...I mean...

Whew. That's a bullet dodged.

Patter Song: Huh? Oh, um...

Are we going to tell her that we Don't have a special someone, or are we going to tell her that There's someone we've noticed?

Also, while I have you here, this leads directly into the next vote. I swear this will be the last double vote for many, many updates (well into Day 3). After we chat with Chigusa, we're going alone into the big city, and we can only go to one place.

Do you want to sit at the Cafe and get something to drink, or maybe go to the classier Classical Cafe and do the same? Because you're goons on the Let's Play Board of Something Awful, maybe you want to Go to the Arcade and relive some memories of losing to Street Fighter II to that one guy with the giant stack of quarters who knew all the combos. (Maybe some of you actually were that one guy/girl) We could also head to the Cake Shop, because what teenage girl doesn't love cake? Or, Patter Song could prove to be way more sophisticated and elegant than I assumed she was and head to the traditional Japanese Teahouse? Remember, we only get to see one of these, so make it count!

That's two votes: Do we or do we not have our eye on someone, and where do we want to spend our free time in the city?

Next update will probably be after Thanksgiving, so feel free to chat and whatever in the mean time. Until then, the Absolute Destiny Apocalypse!

We've seen Juri boob and arcade, mostly because I want to see the Utena take on an arcade. Ohtori's not a real technology-heavy place.
