Yeah but at least you can get like 20 bucks or more off of it depending on when and if you get bored or hate a game.

Like it'll be easy and no consequences by then if the 360's online support is anything to go by. It's not like having a lovely piece of plastic that never held the full game matters. If you kept the disc to 2035 that means you liked it enough to keep or didn't care.

I never keep single-player based games after I beat them and do a handful of side poo poo until I'm bored (which is pretty quick). I don't even keep the CoD games for longer than a few months and flip them for $25-30. Physical rules as I'm not forced to keep a depreciating "asset" I'm no longer using, and get some money back to put into another time sink.

Digital appeals to me because I don't want a bunch of bright green cases cluttering up my living space. I don't have to leave my place in the dead of winter, fight Chicago traffic, get home and install it. With digital I just bust out my phone at work, buy the game, and it's ready to roll by the time I step off the train. I haven't bothered to trade any games in since 2012 or so. If I do have discs I don't want I give them to friends or my nephews. It also helps that digital sales have been quite robust over the last two or three years.

If I really had a problem with green boxes cluttering stuff up I'd just go 1999 style and have a big rear end disc binder. That poo poo is the coolest.

Blackout really is a near-completely different type of game played via COD, it's wild that it works as good as it does.

Im interested to see if general consumers will actually get locked into an ecosystem that has refocused itself around digital rentals and being hardware agnostic, or if they will treat xbox as something they buy a month of here or there.

Beastie posted:Doesn't everybody but Nintendo lose money when you a buy a console? Is this microsoft trying to lock more people into their ecosystem for when the new stuff hits around 2020? That's usually the case at launch but the boxes eventually get cheap enough to build that the price exceeds the BOM. MS killed the original Xbox pretty early because their agreement with Nvidia hosed with that. This time around I think MS and Sony actually targeted profitable MSRP boxes either right out the gate or very soon after, hence the trash CPUs in both.

You're thinking of when a console launches. By the time the console's been around a number of years and had a cost-reduction redesign or two in place, they're also making money on the consoles. That discless system looks like it'll be a repackaged S without the optical drive so it's easy to see where they can drop the price by $100 and still come out ahead on the sale.

RDR2 gave you a physical map, even in the basic edition, and there's a full, helpful manual accessible both in the game menu itself and available in a separate app. That seems like an acceptable compromise to me, except for the part where they have two discs on a single spindle knowing that the Xbox can be finicky about discs for their DRM.

A new xbox one? The fourth Xbox One console... Is removing a disk going to save them millions in manufacturing costs? WHy bother when the console will be replaced in 2020... surely they have a ton of stock left for Xbone OG, Xbone S and Xbone X.

drunkill posted:A new xbox one? Well yeah at this point in the console lifecycle it's all about making the most of those margins, and there's a couple of years to get people into the system, subscribed to gamepass and Live and make money off them while they become 'invested in the Xbox family' or however the corporate types would put it. If you can take the big spinning laser thing out of the console you can increase those margins even higher while making the system cheaper. I could see the cost reduced S actually settling in at the $200 price point at this stage, we're at the point in the cycle that generally happens, and this discless one ending up at $150 or less. Edit: Also no they don't have a lot of stock sitting around, everything now is built in the factories, shipped straight to stores to get sold, no-one wants to be paying to keep stuff sitting around in warehouses. Yes but they never really sold all that well so in theory there'd be a lot of stock still sitting around somewhere, right? I mean I can't imagine they undermanufactured expecting it to flip or anything.

To be fair, Blu-ray discs are incredibly scratch resistant, so multiple discs on a single spindle is even less of an issue than with DVDs.
