Nope, the sun won't be hot enough to make Earth unlivable until around 7 billion years into its life cycle, or around 2.5 billion years from now. If we had a full scale nuclear exchange tomorrow that killed everything larger than a rat, you think that rat's ancestors, given free reign over the planet, would take 2.5 billion years to get up to our level? They only appeared a couple of million years ago in the fossil record, so imagine what their ancestors would look like in 50 or 100 million years.

And even if it got too bright for present day life to exist, well, evolution keeps pace with environmental change pretty well. If humans exist that long, they'd just get darker and darker and everyone would be 12-o'clock-midnight black. Or we'd retreat further and further towards the poles and deal with it like that. Life, uh, finds a way.

As far as using up fuel is concerned, the amount of uranium left in the planet outweighs the amount we've used by several hundred to one. What you might read is about how the "economically viable" uranium isn't accessible and guess what: oil in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico was considered inaccessible until the Oil Crises of the 70s when the price went from around $3/barrel to more than four times that in the space of a few years. Economically viable means "we can make a profit from extracting it" not "we can't get to it". Uranium that gets left over in tailings dams today might be worth processing out in the future, and in 4.5 billion years there will still be half as much in them as there is today. And that's as much about will as it is about economics. If we got a confirmed threat to our species tomorrow that could only be solved by mining uranium, and somehow pulled our heads out of our orifices long enough to deal with it, you better believe we'd get every ounce of it out of the crust that we could, and drat the expense.

One valid concern is that if we did wipe ourselves out, an issue a new civilisation might have is finding the easy-get raw materials we've used to build civilisation. Fortunately for the forthcoming rat people, an anthropogenic concentration mechanism has massively enriched certain areas on or near the crustal surface they can mine after they get along that far in technological devlopment. They're called cities. Fossil fuels to build a society is also a valid concern. The coal measures that still exist around the world have literally thousands of years of production left in them at current levels. Maybe we use it all before we wipe ourselves out? Fair point - maybe the Rat-people would get much better much faster at using solar and wind to power electric motors. They might not ever have a chance to learn from our mistakes, but the great thing about us making them is that if another civilisation comes along after we've blasted ourselves to pieces, they won't ever get a chance to make them because there won't be massive oil reserves to kill and enslave each other over :unsmith:

yeah, I know, sorry, I'll get a large baconator meal and a vanilla frosty

Wikipedia's timeline of the future shows increased solar luminosity causing CO2 stoppage making photosynthesis impossible in under 600M.

Ironically, fossil fuel reserves could be replenished in as little as 50M years, so don't worry, theoretical far future rat ppl will be genociding each other for coal and oil just fine!

There will be no rat ppl, human level intelligence plus environmental manipulation tools (hands) plus stable enough environment to build sedentary societies seems really unlike to pop up again before everything goes blooey, given that it appears to have popped up exactly once so far. Glistening Hodor guy is right. Start building some guillotines.
