shame religion seems to be a binary thing. I was hoping since all the religions, save one or two, are polytheistic that there might have been a way to incorporate local gods into your pantheon, like epona in rome. who am I kidding, I just wanna lead massalia to greatness and don't want a lot of obstacles in my path on the way to it.

I'm just starting with Warlock II, I'd love a pointer on where to find a good basic guide... I don't play many strategy games and this seems to be perfect for me, I just want to cruise around smashing things (I mean conquering) and having fun being a sub-optimal player. I'd just prefer to have a bit better grasp of the basics without sinking too many extra hours into dumb projects.

If you've played any of the more recent Civilization games (say, Civ IV or later), then you will feel right at home. It's very much a fantasy Civilization. But there's a very big focus on individual units, each one is much more valuable than your standard Civ warriors/archers/etc. It's pretty important to keep them alive and keep gaining EXP with them. It helps if you have a way to heal them, so it's not a bad idea to take Agrela as patron goddess at the start, or research a healing spell relatively soon. And just start with the human faction, they are the usual standard choice. The game is not too difficult at the easier settings. Just be careful before opening portals to other worlds, do that only once you have your first plane fully under control. And be prepared for much stronger monsters to be lurking on the other side.

It's quite a lot different when you claim that real world, modern day genocides are actually being guided by your fictional magical people who are the protagonists of your setting. Like, at one point White Wolf very famously made a Demon module set in WW2 that very explicitly made the point that the holocaust was entirely the result of human evil, because to try to work it into the story as some kind of secret society thing would basically be like saying "it wasn't actually the Nazi's fault". I guess those writers weren't still working at White Wolf when it came time to write the new stuff.

I never thought I'd see the day where a publishing company: buys up the creators of a product I enjoyed, strips them of all their creative independence, shuts them down as a seperate entity and merges them into the larger company, publicly declares that their intent from now on is to license out the IP to others rather than doing in house development, and my reaction to that would be "thank god".

Actually a city builder that is crossed with CK2: The Conclave is exactly what I have been wanting for a long time. Adding a layer of local politics/political interest groups and city council mechanics would make for a pretty interesting city builder.
