Kinda needs to be, given that we got 12 years to turn this ship around, and a bunch of shitheels trying to stop us.

The real fun begins if demand for oil and gas starts to drop due to renewables uptake, and G20 nations forget why they put up with Saudis and Russian bullshit, but the latter is a bit optimistic.

I really wonder if any of the emissions studies took thawing permafrost releasing gobs of methane into consideration.

That's the "methane gun" theory. When I used to work on the NOAA campus they used to talk about it. Four years ago when I started it was a theory for cranks, before I left they were like 'lol we're hosed' if I asked anybody at coffee.

The latest IPCC report does not take into consideration the levels which are being observed, no.

Studies? Yes, there are studies. It’s not looking good.

it's a highly controversial study

I feel like atmosphere scrubbers would be one huge growth industry as well, but im not seeing any significant developments on a large scale. At this point I'm resigned to a bladerunner future being a best case scenario, but I'm encouraging friends and family to pay more attention to their consumption habits

Oh, also, the IPCC report scenarios all rely on carbon capture and sequestration working at scale.

Not to say that can’t happen, but we most certainly aren’t there yet.

There was a WaPo article not too long ago that focused on a scientist studying tundra permafrost melt in the arctic. She’s careful to say that it needs further study, but if what she’s finding is widespread it’s not a pretty picture.

That's not going to happen unless there's a big splash news story that involves A LOT of deaths in a very short period of time.

I’m just some guy on the Internet, but my rosy perspective is that Trump/chuddites is the beginning of that behavior. So, yeah, when it moves from cultural subconscious to conscious panic mode, it’ll be very interesting.

Don't worry. I'm sure in the next few years a storm and massive flooding is going to hit a city that's barely keeping it together like Karachi or Mumbai, with spectacularly bloody results.
