I've got both a Xbone S and a PS4 Pro. On the PS4 side the difference between regular/slim and pro isn't worth the savings. The only downside of the Pro is that fucker is loud.

The latest revision of the Pro (CUH-7200+) is apparently much quieter.

Hey question to ask without wading into console-specific threads in games, and I kind of trust the hive mind here a little more....

I am thinking about getting a new video game console for myself and probably also buy one as a gift to my father in law for xmas this year. There are some good black friday deals on and coming up and not sure if I should stick with Sony or jump to MS.

We both presently use a PS3 as our main home entertainment hub but not necessarily handcuffed to Sony, although I do like the Gran Turismo series. We do both own a PS3 and various assorted games along with it, although it doesn't sound like there is backwards compatibility so I'm not sure if that has any value. Besides, it's not like the current PS3 has to be thrown away.

We both have 1080p TVs, is there any benefit going to one of the "upgraded" consoles like the PS4 Pro or Xbox X for 1080p?

Not a huge gamer, but probably would end up buy RDR2 right away for myself, and I'd probably look for car racing games for dad. He also likes pinball games (like Pinball Arcade - owns every season in PS3).

Opinions for which way to go for the casual gamer? Online play is minimal, if any, we might sometimes play head-head in racing games but that hasn't happened in a long time. I see there is a good deal now for a One S bundle w/Forza.

Definitely stick with Sony for the exclusives. I got a PS4 Pro last Christmas. If you can afford it get one. It makes games run nicer even on 1080p. There was a recent model revision to the pro that keeps them a bit quiter. Only comes with the RDR2 bundle afaik.

Forza is significantly better than Gran Turismo in every facet, especially in multiplayer/online. There's also Forza Horizon, which is the general physics from Forza Motorsport, but casual-ized and made less demanding for crosscountry hijinks. I own both systems and have largish hands (not freakish, just big enough to goof heartily on Trump's hands), the Xbox controller is far more comfortable for me but the PS4's controller is a huge upgrade in ergonomics from the PS3.

I prefer Live's UX and general features over PSN but I'm also a lot more familiar with it. PS has Bloodborne (which isn't exactly 'for casuals') and also Horizon Zero Dawn which is nice but overall is just another Far Cry game when you boil it down and was nothing spectacular to me. The voiceacting is catastrophically horrible and took me out of the 'marvel at the scenery' mood. If you are picking this system up for driving games, the Xbox is the clear winner imho but you won't be unhappy with either. If you don't care about "exclusives" you weren't going to play anyway, which is the main selling point of the Playstation, then the games are going to be 99% the same on both.

Definitely get the Pro or the X, there's no reason not to because TVs are only going to get better and cheaper.

Also, buy Red Dead Redemption 2 immediately while you're in the shop.

Well, as I said not being a big gamer exclusives really has minor benefit to me, but it does seem the One S is the least powerful/capable of the 4 machines, so I'm going to rule that one out.

PS4 does seem to have the best/most recommendations going for it and since I plan on buying RDR2 immediately for myself, I'll probably look for a pro RDR2 bundle. A PS4 Slim + RDR2 will probably not be all that much cheaper assuming I can get a decent deal on a Pro.

I'll probably then get some sort of PS4 slim bundle of some sorts for father-in-law, unless the Pro is a really, really good deal as he'll never play RDR2 so it would be wasted on him.

Thanks for the help.

This is more "abusive workplace poo poo" but her manager bullied the poo poo out of her and threatened to fire the hell out of her if she bothered making an incidence report for any of the exposures she's had unless they resulted in bleeding wounds/broken bones. So the hep c treatment won't be covered from the workplace, but insurance will be picking up the slack so we don't have to drain our savings much. Thank God for low out of pocket maximums. A lawyer would make sense, but after talking to a few, the monetary cost is about equal and this way we can just move on and take care of our poo poo.

I figured the center channel speaker can sit on the mantle but IDK what to do about left and right.

I could theoretically do in wall but the cost is prohibitive but I really don't want any visible wires

Maybe wall mount the speakers to the side of the TV and hide the wires behind the TV?

There’s a long drill bit tool (4ft) that Home Depot sells that’s made for running wires in a wall. If you have a 2 story it can be a little tricky to start the 90 degree angle, but all you need is a little spackle and paint that matches the room, you can take a paint chip to Home Depot and have it matched up in the du pont electric eye machine if you don’t have any left over.

The best you'll do if you can't run cables in the wall is to get coving and run the cables through it, like initial Dave said.

That or spring for a new setup, there are a few wireless setups I've seen recently that sounded drat good.

Just got a Thinkpad X1 xxxxxxxxxxxxtreme to replace my old t420s. It's pretty sweet. I like having a thin and light with some power plus a thinkpad keyboard and the ability to upgrade everything (well 2 dims and 2 m.2 pcie slots) by removing 4 screws.
I am so glad they didn't put the embarrassing rear end name on the thing.
The keyboard layout is not quite as nice as my old t-series but the action is exactly the same (which is the same as my even older IBM era t42) and is easy to do everything without looking. My office issues me and HP and when I have to take it out of the docking station, I can barely do a paragraph without wanting to kill my computer.

If you want suggested standard placement for speakers, centre under the screen, left/right speakers 30 degrees either side of screen from your seating position and surrounds 20 degrees behind your head from seating position. All tweeters at ear level if possible, angled if not.

TV ideally should be mounted so when you’re sat down your eyelevel is mid-screen or just a tad higher (same plane as speakers which are ear level ideally) But people don’t tend to mount them above fireplaces if there’s any other choice so whatever.

Yeah I don't get that, I've noticed lots of people mounting their TVs so far up the wall you get a kink in your neck watching it. A buddy of mine has his hanging like a foot from the ceiling angled down which is horrible imo, but he says he likes it like that

TV at eye level, speakers at ear level besides the sub obviously.
