My favorite shredder is still Nuno Bettencourt. All his wanking has a start point, an end point, and a path between them. Plus he uses actual classical references. Rondo a la turka in play with me, and flight of the bumblebee, etc. Plus he plays a boring old Washburn super-strat, and doesn't have a signature guitar.

Plus he has resting bitch face on stage.

I've never listened to his solo album though, so I reserve the right to change my mind.

"Play With Me", from the Bill and Ted soundtrack, is really, really great.

Yngwie has pretty outstanding picking technique (just look at this vid and pay attention to the right hand, how absolutely effortless and minimalistic it is) and the best vibrato ever (possibly tied with Gilmour).

yngwie’s music isnt really my jam most of the time but i’ve always been impressed how he can make all those notes still sound like actual dang music

i mean sure, it sounds like castlevania, but compared to a lot of other shredders who are basically doing hand tricks to a drumbeat it’s really impressive

People say he's over the top or whatever, but if I could do what he does, I'd probably never stop shredding that fast either!

Joe Stump rules and I only found out about him recently, his playing remains pretty tasteful and his execution is effortless and perfect. Dude's a fantastic player.

I'd actually disagree that he's clearly worse... Or at least that it's a matter of taste.

Yngwie, *especially* when he's improvising, has a tendency to forget that he's playing in a rock band and that despite the frilly shirts, he isn't Paganini. As a consequence of this, he tends to start/end phrases on "weird" beats, and the guitar parts are frequently somewhat disconnected from the rhythm. I don't mean that he's playing out of time or making mistakes-- technically speaking he might be the best guitarist ever, I believe that his 7-tuplets are perfectly arranged and all that -- but the guitar often doesn't accent the strong beats in the music. I assume this is perfectly intentional and that in Yngwie's Swedish brain he's doing something brilliant that mere mortal like me can't appreciate. (He doesn't always do this, but it annoys the poo poo out of me when he does.)

Joe Stump tends to play stuff that sounds more straightforwardly rock/metal-ish because he accents the strong beats and generally follows the rhythmic pulse of the music. Like Stump sounds more, to me, like Ritchie Blackmore after smoking a mountain of meth, whereas Yngwie sounds more like what I imagine Paganini would if you gave him an electric guitar.

Unless you're saying that Stump is worse than Yngwie technically? I mean maybe that's true but both of them can play clean 16th note triplets at like 180bpm so who really cares if Yngwie can jerk off 5bpm faster.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IcBG9LS-pY If you give that a listen I think you'll see what I mean about the rhythm. Maybe you think that sucks, but it's way more rhythmically even than most Yngwie stuff - I don't think Yngwie could end up writing something that sounds like that.

That dance of Kashani video is real bad tho, and I say that as someone who actually likes the album version of that song.

Apparently he's also a super nice guy and a pretty decent guitar teacher (his day job is teaching at Berklee). I actually got into him through his sweep picking book. If you watch Yngwie's "lesson" videos he's always "It's so complicated! I can't explain it!" whereas Stump is actually pretty good at communicating what he's doing.

Eh I mean, like the intro sorta sounds like that I guess? I hadn't heard of Coroner before though and I'm listening to Punishment for Decadence now though and it's pretty good (is this like... neoclassical thrash metal?). Even if you don't like it though, the fact that his music plausibly sounds like thrash metal marks out the distinction between him and Yngwie that I was trying to explain.

Not really sure how you could like Coroner and strongly dislike Speed Metal Messiah but I won't argue the point since you pointed me to a new band that I like.

He can definitely "disconnect" from the underlying beat at times, but I think his lines tend to flow on their own really well and seem to make sense even so. But it could be that I am a fanboy since the 80s so my mind's been warped.

Can definitely write some "typical" rock stuff though and stick to it. Even the solos can remain tied to the ground. E.g.

Is that thing on the bridge of the Nuno guitar a drop tuner?

If it is, how does it work? I mean on Eddie's version his bridge is non floating so dropping just the E string to D doesn't put all the other strings out of whack but Nuno's Floyd looks like a floating one so how does that work?

edit: Just looked it up and it seems it doesn't and you would have to block the bridge/use a tremol-no or something to use it without it ruining your tuning.
