I started to watch it one day while doing housework, and then five minutes in I had no idea what was going on, and I remembered that it's by the complicated stud muffin Cary Fukunaga, so I decided I should set it aside for a time when I can give it my full attention.

It's real good stuff. Fukunaga and Patrick Somerville is a potent combo. The tone in the first episode gave me a strong whiff of Vonnegut, and well, he's one of my favorite writers, so that kept me staying for the whole series. The tone isn't always there, but every other aspect is well done, and the show just hits on many things relevant to our times while staying weird as gently caress.

Maniac didn't grab me as much as I hoped it would. It's pretty good and I want to finish it, but tbh I struggled to care about what was going on in the 3 episodes I watched.

Unrelated, but Buster Scruggs was fantastic.

That one starts off melancholic and just gets worse. All of the poems/stories/excerpts he's reciting all deal with once strong persons no longer being strong and being forgotten with time.

Whereas the Wagon Train segment feels open-ended throughout, making the bitter twist a much bigger surprise. It also has the most misleading title of all the shorts, in my opinion.

the poems/stories/excerpts definitely made it extraordinarily dark, especially when you're trying to figure out if the two have a caring/sweet relationship or if he's just being taken advantage of as the title suggests

the wagon train one's title made sense though once you realize she seems to be so even keeled and not rattled until the end when you realize he scared her so much with the instructions for using the gun and when he faked dead she got rattled and figured her only option was to shoot herself.

To add to this, what makes the wagon train more tragic, is that at first the old cowboy seems indifferent and angry at the woman; his final stand reveals that he does in fact care for her beau almost like a son, and so he takes on this fatherly role when he protects her; it makes his fake-out and her demise even more tragic.

the fact he takes the little dog with him at the end too. but yeah, he knows it's partially his fault she shot herself and now he has to explain it to mr. knapp, who was really excited to finally get married, settle down and stop escorting wagon trains.

i can get that, it got really dark. i really liked it though because each of the stories really effectively made you wonder about the intentions and flaws of the characters and like a good short story should, each one made the most of the little time it had and kept you guessing until the end, at which point you're kinda floored by the outcome.

i also really liked the whole theme of looking through an old book, complete with sheets protecting the pictures and the conclusion shots of the last pages and words of each story.

Ton Waits is my all-time favorite musical artist, and yes, he is a hell of an actor too. Most of his songs are very theatrical and cinematic, which makes a lot of sense.

I believe I’ve said it before, but if I could make my Dream movie it would be a biopic of Tom Waits starring Ron Perlman as Tom Waits and Tom Waits as the devil.

Waits is one of the few people still kicking that just seem to accumulate tall tales. Joe Strummer is said to have attributed his first big break to Waits. Strummer said he was hanging behind a club with his gear hoping the bouncer would let him in to play. Waits comes out, looks him up and down, pulls a full pint of Guinness out of his pocket and downs it in a single chug. Then nods over to strummer and invites him in to play with him.

Hell yeah, I'd pay to see that. Neko Case's song "Star Witness" is one of those songs that--no matter the situation--if it comes on, I'm depressed and might cry.

She's also very funny when she's not singing heartbreaking songs. I'd love to see her act in something.
