Ask me about my undying love for Derek Jeter.
I had to step away for a bit, but getting back to my previous points that I was trying to make. People need to stop being so cynical for once. Take the win here. Not every single person elected will be as far left as you, but there is no question that liberals have moved the overton window out left in this election. The moderates who won are now less moderate than they were 8 years ago when there was the last wave. I'm not sure any of them are pro-life. None of them are on the record saying the tax cuts were a good idea. They all support the ACA completely, which was a complete pain in the rear end to get the blue dogs to pass even this watered down bill. I think all of them at least support a public option now, which was unheard of only 8 years ago just like it was unheard of the the furthest left in the party to support medicare for all, which is now supported by nearly every presidential candidate. If that's not enough, look at specific examples

Alison Spanberger is in a district near me who beat Dave Brat in what used to be Eric Cantor's old seat. I don't know the last time that district was blue. She is one of the moderates who is against Pelosi as speaker, but step back for a moment here and look at this. They replaced someone who won because he was more extreme than Cantor with someone who is unabashedly pro-choice, who wants a public option and would probably support medicare for all if she really had to. She's pro-amnesty. She wants an assault rifle ban and background checks. She wants the feds to decriminalize marijuana. She believes in climate change and wants action on it.

All of this and you are still bitching at this kind of person. WAHHHHHHHHHH. This wasn't a vote that Pelosi would have ever gotten anyway on her speakership if she couldn't win it and you're already looking for concessions from these people and attacking them from their left flank. Chill out. These reps are going to vote with hardcore liberals 90% of the time instead of a dave brat voting against them 99% of the time and they are all to the left of every blue dog and "obama liberal" from 5 or 10 years ago. And by running on these platforms, this is their mandate. They didn't have to tack to the right in order to win their districts here. The worst they had to do was not associate themselves with current leadership...good! Don't! The point is that their actual positions have all shifted left and on top of that the progressives in the caucus have already begun doing the heavy lifting of primarying moderates in safe blue districts to shift the party further left in the coming years. These things take time, be patient.

The Trump administration is preparing to add Venezuela to the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism in what would be a dramatic escalation against the socialist government of Nicolás Maduro, according to U.S. officials and internal government emails.

The list is reserved for governments accused of repeatedly providing “support for acts of international terrorism” and includes only Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.

Republican lawmakers led by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) have pushed for the designation, citing Venezuela’s alleged ties to Lebanese Hezbollah, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and other groups.

I find it interesting that say Tamir Rice deserved to die beyond question because the definitely-not-at-all-murder-cop-biased justice system refused to indict so that settles that, but suddenly you're okay with throwing out the rules of evidence and a judge's verdict and presuming guilt based on circumstances and "well you can't prove she isn't guilty"

One of my grad school colleagues was part of her campaign and it was just purely for tokenism. They called her their "BMW" (Black Mormon Woman) and think that since they promoted her up she'd show the world Utah's totally not a bunch of weird white Mormons.

Before she was a rep she was "Mayor" of a tiny Mormon town in Utah County that's run by a City Manager so she was really just a figurehead then as well. Pretty much how she acted as a representative as well. Just did what she was told and voted accordingly.

This is again a bunch of poo poo that didn't happen and you've either made up or fundamentally do not understand to the point you're describing them so poorly as to be indistinguishable from being made up.

The Taliban and other groups kill/beat/torture people that it identifies as working with the US
Manning publicly identified a bunch of people who were working with the US
A large number of these identified people were killed, other's that were connected to those identified were killed.

Not being able to individually prove that any of these specific instances were a result of manning's identification rather than another source of identification does not prove none of them were killed based on her information.

This isn't "we can't prove vaccines don't cause autism" (which by the way is bullshit because we have a bunch of evidence they don't) this is "we can't prove whether it was a lifetime of smoking or the asbestos exposure that caused the lung cancer". You're looking at the latter and saying it's proof asbestos is perfectly safe.

Right this is a circumstantial case so weak the government didn't even try to make it.

According to the case many of the people identified died before the leak even happened so I'm going to ask you to back up what a "large number" is and whether more people died after than before (do you even know)

Also according to that link the judge scrubbed the record of the claim that someone died because of the leak so I didn't misremember, that claim was so spurious she wasn't just acquitted of it, it wasn't even allowed to be recorded as evidence in a show trial of a political prisoner whose guilt was predetermined behind the barest fig leaf of legitimacy.

Jarmak posted:

It doesn't prove they were, you're the one insisting we presume guilt here, in contravention to your usual stance when a cop is on trial for murdering someone on camera.

You're looking at the latter and saying it's proof asbestos is perfectly safe.

It is literally true that you can't prove the cause of lung cancer in some specific instance, but we don't have to because we make policy based on statistical evidence over a large number of cases.

But we're not dealing with a large number of cases where we can look at population data and estimate the average number of deaths per leak if any, we're talking about the specific case of specific guilt attaching to a specific individual and we don't convict individuals based on population trends for very obvious reasons even if we had population trends for something like this which we don't.

Like I guess since a bunch of people in the leak were dying before it happened, you could maybe compare whether there was an uptick after the leak, idk if anyone's done that but I'm skeptical that if someone did and it showed even a shred of likelihood that she killed anyone that Obama would still have given her clemency.

But maybe you have secret evidence that the CIA and the military doesn't even know about. Or maybe Obama did know and released her because he's a secret Muslim, I can't disprove it!
