The Dem just like, gave up, I guess because he figured the bone Ducey threw to teachers that was covered in slow-acting poison scared Dems and they thought he was too strong. Democratic candidates did p. drat well in the rest of the state.

Grondoth posted:Also Nelson straight didn't try. He basically did nothing. I was kind of astounded on how late in the campaign it took him to realize he might lose. Like alot of Clintonite dems aren't just lovely politically, but also seem to think that they can just coast to elections whenever the wind is against the GOP. It's good in a sense because really the party is better without them. But also really is going to make things hurt in the short term for a while.

one major reason we live in hellworld is that, in addition to the GOP being blood-gargling psychos, their main opposition party is incredibly incompetent. we have to bleed out that poison before we can fix things and it’s gonna hurt while we do

Is there any evidence that voting machines were deliberately made to be unreliable, because they were funded by people who want voting to be unreliable? Because yeah, machines are usually made to be reliable these days.

Shear Modulus posted:the senate was actually a genius idea to make sure that the rich minority would control the country forever That was the idea behind having state legislatures vote. Giving less populated states disproportionate representation probably seemed like a better idea when frontier states were using their disproportionate representation to extract money for infrastructure from the coastal states. The alignment of the gerrymandering of the House, the Senate, and the interests of the rich so that the bias is in one direction is unprecedented, like a rare alignment of the planets. galenanorth has issued a correction as of 13:51 on Nov 20, 2018 |

With the gerrymandering going on, is it really down to record turnout that the Democrats won the House? And if so, how do you make sure that happens again in 2020? Just keep the Dem voters angry about Tmurp?

Samurai Sanders posted:Slot machines get used a billion times every day but voting machines are just a few times a year at most. It can't be just a maintenance issue. think about it from the perspective of a voting machine manufacturer. you could make a reliable, fairly secure voting machine, or you could make a malfunctioning piece of junk that will break down in half the time. the second option means twice the sales, far less money spend on design/manufacture, and your voting machine will win competitive price bids. the difference between those options is that the casinos that buy the slot machines profit from them working correctly and being perceived as honest. state governments don't have any incentive to keep voting machines in good shape.

Just keep the Dem voters angry about Tmurp? Presidential years are higher turnout in general and moreso for Dems than reps, or at least that's been the case historically. 2020 state level races are vital to undo the gerrymandering damage after the next census. It's hard to crack, but if the gender gap keeps growing that's harder to gerrymander around than racial and class divides

An insane mind posted:With the gerrymandering going on, is it really down to record turnout that the Democrats won the House? And if so, how do you make sure that happens again in 2020? Just keep the Dem voters angry about Tmurp? PAs gerrymandering was so bad from 2010 that the lawsuit succeeded by basically showing if you randomly redrew the map a hundred million (or a billion forget which) times 99.87% of those maps would be more friendly to democrats. Additionally, there is a whole bunch of language about how districts were supposed to be drawn which was completely ignored and subverted when the map was drawn. I forget if this is the first or second election with CAs independent commission drawing their map, but that certainly helped. So a combination of 'Blue wave/tide/trickle' and some redraws certainly helped. Looking forward Michigan just approved a whole bunch of interesting voter stuff...dunno about gerrymander stuff, but it's positive either way. If Florida ever gives the right to vote back to felons (they won't) that would probably be a huge game changer there. NC has a gerrymander case that is very similar to the PA one which with the addition of another Dem friendly judge (adding to their majority tbf) could have a similar outcome as PAs. There were some other gerrymander lawsuits working their way through the system as well which depending on how they play out could make holding the house in 2020 a bit less difficult but then 2020 census will probably ruin that on top of Trump trumping so RIP I guess.
