It's been heavily rumored that Travolta was trying to leave the church after his son passed away. It was clear his son had autism and Scientology forbids psychiatric medications (man I wonder why this is) so his son never received the care he was supposed to. The rumor is he couldn't leave because the church has the audio of him talking about his homosexuality during the auditing process. Apparently Travolta is a nice dude, though incredibly odd. Also the whole masseuse harassment scandal...

Yeah, I have a hard time being angry at Tom Cruise as an individual in the same way I have a hard time being angry at Jake Paul as an individual, the systems and structures that created them have harmed so many other people that it just seems useless to blame the individual instead of that system which has caused so much more pain. I don't blame my nose when I have a cold, right?

You don't just "leave" Scientology. It's not like how you can just stop going to your temple or stop being Catholic. The whole "sign up" process has you relive trauma repeatedly while being recorded. They systematically brainwash and break you while making notes of everything. They have powerful lawyers with infinite pockets and time. Don't think give out special web browsers that censor the news and poo poo? They have a network of spies, stalkers and harrassers to bother anyone that tries to leave or messes with members.

The only way to leave 'religious' organizations like Scientology and the Church of the Latter Day Saints is to basically die. I dunno how folks like Leah Ramini manage it.

I'm only basing this on Nathan Rabin's review of her book but I think Leah Ramini basically got out by willingly revealing anything Scientology had on her and then just fighting them at every turn when they tried other techniques. She has the money to ward off their bullshit and she's not willing to be quiet about any of it so I think these days they're mainly reactive to her

Yeah, that seems to be the only way to do it, which sounds exhausting.

I remember Harris Wittles talking about Scientology. His girlfriend was deep in the church of scientology, and he was struggling with heroin addiction. He went to their rehab center, which he said was beautiful and nice, and everyone he met was just the nicest person and supportive. He described it like the weird off-putting perfection of The Stepford Wives. He didn't follow through after his first meeting, and the church, he assumes, made her cut all contact with him after they creeped him out. He sought rehab somewhere else, and, well, relapsed and died.

The point is, like many other religions and organizations, at first everything seems great and beautiful and perfect, like the religion worked for those people. Once you're in, they hook you, and the price to get out is either 1) die, or 2) exist in the public eye as a whistleblower, meanwhile everyone you love and care for--friends and family and loved ones--in the church are completely removed from your life.

S'hosed up.

The other thing with Scientology is it's like specifically made to appeal to people with mental illness. Like one of it's central tenants is that all mental illness and bad feeling are caused by alien ghosts. To someone that wants to think they are in full control of themselves, it makes you feel way better if you can convince yourself that all your problems are being caused by an single external force rather than being forced to accept there's some parts of you that are not working correctly and you need help. From everything I know about Cruise (which admittedly still isn't that much), you can see why this whole thing would just dig itself completely into his particular brain.
