In this country, tens of millions of people choose to watch FoxNews not simply because Americans are credulous idiots or at the behest of some right-wing corporate cabal, but because average Americans respect viciousness. They are attracted to viciousness for a lot of reasons. In part, it reminds them of their bosses, whom they secretly adore. Americans hate themselves for the way they behave in public, always smiling and nodding their heads with accompanying really?s and uh-huhs to show that they’re listening to the other person, never having the guts to say what they really feel. So they vicariously scream and bully others into submission through right-wing surrogate-brutes. Spending time watching Sean Hannity is enough for your average American white male to feel less cowardly than he really is. http://exiledonline.com/we-the-spiteful/ Note that it was written in 2011. Trump is a horrible person's ideal person: aggressively horrible and selfish, but no matter how dumb or horrible he is, he's the top bully and nobody can make him shut up or go away. Think back to grade school bullies. Everyone reacted to the bullies differently. Some people fought the bullies, some avoided them, etc., but some people decided the bully was an ideal to look up to. Those people are now Trump's base.

It's significant actually because right-wing media has spent so long working themselves into a tizzy over the supposed "communism" of people like Nancy "we're capitalists" Pelosi that basic social democracy from someone like AOC is simply incomprehensible to them.

The issue basically is that liberal media has decided to portray the "average Trump voter" as trailer-dwelling lower class white people, when in reality his base of support is well-to-do suburban white people. That the latter group may actually be atrocious people is anathema to the media because it implies the entire basis of American culture is rotten. Thread title?

I watched the first episode and a half of the last season of House of Cards the other day. The main plot is apparently Kevin Spacey (the president) was assassinated by a shadow cabal of wealthy people in his own bed and Robin Wright is trying to figure out the conspiracy. When your awful, West Wingish show is even pointing at conspiracies of the wealthy, you know the inequality is resonating in pop culture.

And it's really only just beginning.

I wonder how long it will take for us to dump the stigma that socialism in any form will turn us into Stalinist Russia instantly rather than creating things like libraries. Look at the ACA, no one wanted it before it launched because SOCIALISM and now people are pissing blood at the idea of it being taken away. I know that it's by design but come on people

Pharma CEOs take a ton of heat because even the only rational business choice can produce horrible outcomes; it doesn't matter to the people with the disease if it's a capitalism problem or a pharma problem.
