quote:

This is America, not Denmark. In this country, tens of millions of people choose to watch FoxNews not simply because Americans are credulous idiots or at the behest of some right-wing corporate cabal, but because average Americans respect viciousness. They are attracted to viciousness for a lot of reasons. In part, it reminds them of their bosses, whom they secretly adore. Americans hate themselves for the way they behave in public, always smiling and nodding their heads with accompanying really?s and uh-huhs to show that they’re listening to the other person, never having the guts to say what they really feel. So they vicariously scream and bully others into submission through right-wing surrogate-brutes. Spending time watching Sean Hannity is enough for your average American white male to feel less cowardly than he really is.

The left won’t accept this awful truth about the American soul, a beast that they believe they can fix “if only the people knew the Truth.”

But what if the Truth is that Americans don’t want to know the Truth? What if Americans consciously choose lies over truth when given the chance–and not even very interesting lies, but rather the blandest, dumbest and meanest lies? What if Americans are not a likeable people? The left’s wires short-circuit when confronted with this terrible possibility; the right, on the other hand, warmly embraces Middle America’s rank soul and exploits it to their full advantage. The Republicans know Americans better than the left. They know that it’s not so much Goering’s famous “bigger lie” that works here, but the dumber and meaner the lie, the more the public wants to hear it repeated.

Note that it was written in 2011.

Trump is a horrible person's ideal person: aggressively horrible and selfish, but no matter how dumb or horrible he is, he's the top bully and nobody can make him shut up or go away.

Think back to grade school bullies. Everyone reacted to the bullies differently. Some people fought the bullies, some avoided them, etc., but some people decided the bully was an ideal to look up to. Those people are now Trump's base.

H Alloy, I'm not arguing that we shouldn't do something about the orphan drug problem. I'm arguing that 1.) That really isn't what's going on here and 2.) Continuous production still wouldn't be the solution.

the exec quoted talking about the pricing didn't mention cost of production at all, and said the pricing was put in place cause alternative treatments were expensive. i'm not sure why you think that the drug was pricey cause it cost a ton to produce. there's no evidence for that in the piece I quoted

The rub is that Ben Shapiro does like Trump, in terms of ideology, he just thinks Trump is too vulgar to publicly support.

(it's because Bush and Trump aren't that different :ssh: )

It's significant actually because right-wing media has spent so long working themselves into a tizzy over the supposed "communism" of people like Nancy "we're capitalists" Pelosi that basic social democracy from someone like AOC is simply incomprehensible to them.

Trump's likeability is a mystery to you because you aren't a bad person. The type of people attracted to Trump are bad people. The issue basically is that liberal media has decided to portray the "average Trump voter" as trailer-dwelling lower class white people, when in reality his base of support is well-to-do suburban white people. That the latter group may actually be atrocious people is anathema to the media because it implies the entire basis of American culture is rotten.

I watched the first episode and a half of the last season of House of Cards the other day. The main plot is apparently Kevin Spacey (the president) was assassinated by a shadow cabal of wealthy people in his own bed and Robin Wright is trying to figure out the conspiracy.

When your awful, West Wingish show is even pointing at conspiracies of the wealthy, you know the inequality is resonating in pop culture.

I forget who said it originally, but it's like the theory that as the right continued to scream "SOCIALISM" at even the weakest, most moderate Dem proposals and refused to compromise over the years, eventually it would come to pass where the harder left members of the Dems would start to go "well, gently caress it then" and go full-on towards socialist policies, because centrist bipartisanship is no longer working. And it's really only just beginning. :getin:

I think a lot of people aren't interested in distinguishing between the particularly greedy shitheads and the people who make reasonable decisions under capitalism when both have massive human costs. Pharma CEOs take a ton of heat because even the only rational business choice can produce horrible outcomes; it doesn't matter to the people with the disease if it's a capitalism problem or a pharma problem.
