It's also telling that popular modern science fiction doesn't even bother to terraform Mars. The Expanse franchise is in the late 2400s and Mars is still just a bunch of domes. Mass Effect is in the late 2100s and it doesn't have a breathable atmosphere. Like goddamn.

Yeah in the expanse the "dream" of the dusters is still to terraform mars, and this is when mars is independent of earth and has a huge navy and they STILL can't do it because of cost/time. Mass effect they didn't bother with because gently caress now you have all these new garden worlds, why spend the time/effort (which turns into a major plot point in the expanse as well)

I'm reading the article more like the real estate equivalent of insider trading, as in they bought early due to non-public information, just to sit on the property for speculation purposes. Not to mention that the buyers wouldn't likely be run-of-the-mill employees, but Amazon executives.

It could be entirely above-board and clean, but I personally smell something stinking and it's tyool 2018 so

Fairly sure insider trading doesn’t apply in this situation since there’s no securities involved.

The real funny part is all the granular data Amazon got from the applicant cities during the HQ2 search. They got to see long-term development plans from dozens if not hundreds of localities, so there will be more of this except it'll be for land, data centers, distribution centers, etc.

The Expanse is one of the most realistic takes on interplanetary expansion. It's not the glamorous utopia of Star Trek, it's not the swashbuckling adventure of Star Wars, it's cold and dark and miserable and there's a million different ways you can die, both instantly or prolonged. And the greatest danger in the Expanse is capitalism. Some corporate suit thinks they can save a buck by reducing oxygen output on mining stations by 10%, and now your children (who you have to bring with you because you can't exactly drop them off at daycare a million miles away) are growing up literally retarded. And then you get blown up by the military for protesting it.

Mars is extraordinarily hosed up in The Expanse. They all know that the terraforming project will take thousands of years, so everyone who lives there is raised to be fanatically devoted to it. Their economy is still capitalist though, so they end up with a few super rich families that control all the terraforming machinery, and the lower classes are fully indoctrinated to believe that anyone who doesn't work for a living (like the billions of people on Earth on basic income) is a greedy, selfish "taker". The end result is an insanely fascist society.

I loving love The Expanse.

I mean it makes perfect sense. You're looking to house 25-50k high paid, white collar tech workers; some of which will be transferred from Seattle, some of which will be hired locally, and some of which will be hired from all over to go to. The RFP specifically asks for high quality, readily available mass transit and a connection to a nearby major international airport. That immediately knocks out almost every city, because while plenty of cities have international airports, very few have mass transit beyond a goddamn bus line. Techbros aren't going to take the bus to work, and they're not going to live out in the middle of nowhere.

The HQ2 won't be on the west coast, Amazon is already in Seattle, there's a shitload of competitors in California, and between all of that there's no more local talent to suck dry. So that realistically leaves Chicago, Boston, NYC, DC, and Atlanta. Thanks to Atlanta playing gently caress-gently caress games with Delta over the NRA shenanigans any large corporation of that size is going to give pause. So you've got Boston, NYC, and DC.

Bobbi is my second favorite character (after Amos of course because Amos is peak GiP) who starts out all hoorah and gung-ho and "WHO WILL DRINK EARTH'S RIVERS DRY AND POUND THEIR MOUNTAINS TO SAND MARS MARS HOOAH" but realizes very quickly "holy gently caress I puke every time I look -up- because I've lived in a dome my whole life and the gravity hurts my bones and why are there so many people what the gently caress".
