Well he also has enjoyed a huge rise in popularity among Democrats, and is now above 50%, which I think is because he's been accepted by elites.

I mean, I think its probably any amount of "time makes people forget", "Dear God I never thought it could get this bad", "maybe some people who were Republicans 10 years ago are Democrats today?", and probably a touch of "one poll at one time" that might factor in as much as Michelle Obama hugging him (which again, I do not like or defend, to be clear). But it is very unknowable at this time.

Public perception is largely dictated by surface likability, not policy substance. This is where people are getting things twisted thinking Trump will end up being seen as another Reagan or whatever.

Reagan was godawful on substance... but he also had an expertly crafted public image as everyone's lovable grampa that cut across party lines, and that image led to landslide victories. It by and large stuck through various scandals. He was so popular his VP was basically able to coast to a landslide victory himself, in spite of him having the charisma of an oblong gourd. Then Reagan got public sympathy from dying from Alzheimer's.

NONE OF THAT applies to Trump, other than that his brain might be literally rotting as I type this. A majority of the public has disapproved of him for his entire term to date, and that shows 0 signs of ever changing.

Yeah, McConnell is one of the most effective political villains and he's going to be around until he decides to retire, and I think the GOP will probably hold onto the Senate in 2020. He's way more effective than Trump, and if he'd had his way, the entire Kavanaugh circus would have been avoided and they would have crammed someone just as bad but better vetted onto the bench. He's worse than Trump and we need to keep remembering that.

It's still true, he seems like he'd be fun to hang around if you didn't discuss politics. His folksy friendliness is the only thing that's still making the news because it's not like he's committing any fresh war crimes to make headlines.

Nixon still has 2 elementary schools named after him.

Trump is probably going to be similar. Like the Texas 13th congressional district (R+33) might do it.

Comedy option of deep blue states naming things like sewage treatment plants and municipal dumps after him.

Sure, but again, that's something distinctly not in Trump's repertoire. The idea that Trump is just going to be rehabbed basically rests on the idea that Bush and Nixon were passive participants in whatever whitewashing or rehab they have or will experience. But as has been said Nixon worked hard to try and rewrite his history and Bush's greatest assets have always been his folksy charm and deep connections within the machine. People will try to clean up Trump sooner or later. I mean, they'd trying now. But Trump actively works against it.

I mean, its not something I'm banking long term electoral futures on but it doesn't seem like an actual problem. Its not as if I'm making that "we need to abandon social issues to appeal to racist white Republicans" argument. I'm just saying I know a fair number of people who actually, genuinely are Democrats who hate Trump in 2018 but were Republicans who voted Bush in 2008 2004 (obviously, my mind is fried right now). So while small sample size and allegorical evidence and all I do sort of wonder how much impact that sort of thing has in Bush's approval ratings.

lovely allies today are fine as long as we're not changing poo poo to appeal to them and abandon our base (or you know, our values). Which of course, there will be instances where the Democrats DO do that because politics but like it doesn't strike me as some kind of scary sword ready to fall.

Well, it depends. We don't want it happening in places like New York where we can get candidates like AOC to win, but in places like Kentucky where the best we can hope for is a succDem, it's better to have a leftist coalition trying to force change against radical centrists than it is against the Republican party.

What concerns me is that we're currently seeing challenges to Nancy Pelosi from the right. It failed because Blue Dogs are a joke, but if there were more of them it might actually be a serious problem. And imo, more suburbanite support for Democrats means more Blue Dogs.

I'm not saying I don't want their votes (I guess, I mean I would rather they didn't vote R at least), I'm just saying it's probably a double-edged sword.

It doesn't erase the better Dems from better districts, and their Bad Dem is still going to be better than their milquetoast Republican.
