The Marsvision radio is pretty good, and I like the DJ, but it suffers from the same thing all the other radio channels suffer from: not enough songs. I just wish there was an option to just listen to the entire music collection, randomized. I mean I could make a playlist on a separate program but it just seems frustrating that with the wide variety of music in the game there's no "shuffle everything and drat the torpedos" option.

Goddamn, you can straight up have a rival colony just wiped off of the map. :stonk:

Giant meteor was headed towards the Space Y colony and was detected too late. The only options were: let the rock fall or sacrifice a rocket to knock it off course (and trigger a meteor shower directly on top of my base). Since I only had one rocket I really couldn't afford losing that lifeline back to earth.

Yeah, that was kinda my thought.

My only rocket...Elon Musk...my only rocket... To be fair I'm not much better as I'm playing Paradox so I'm a bunch of geeks who launched themselves into space to build the solar system's most expensive game development studio! But I'd totally be a lot more sympathetic if it were anyone else, even a bunch of Russian oligarchs.

So if people who don't have the season pass and haven't purchased the DLC piecemeal, the Season pass is 25% off. Season pass is down to $26 that includes Space Race, Marsvision and the Mars building pack and another $20 DLC coming next year and the current DLC costs $22 piecemeal. I just picked up the season pass just for how big a discount the next DLC becomes.

Got this game at launch, had fun, just got the season pass and trying it again as Brazil which seems really powerful. I sent a rocket back to Earth with 29 rare metals and got paid, uh, 208 trillion dollars.

There was an event shortly before this where the EU colony was market dumping the price of rare metals and I chose the 'let them' option for -25% rare metals prices temporarily in exchange for +25 standing with them, maybe that's related.

Hey don't knock the whole "colony just generates money" start, either via rare metals or, if you start as Blue Sun or Paradox, via bulidings that generate cash. It's one of the more flexible ways to start as you can order whatever you want/need. having all the metal in the world does't do you any good when you need electronics and lack the money necessary to order more, or any type of factory to produce machine parts/chips.

Edit: for reference I started as Paradox Games sponsor on my latest game, and the start gave me nothing more than some concrete and an aquifer to pump from because I didn't feel like save scumming with the single satellite I had. Instead I built a games studio and have been making bank selling Martian games back to Earth (usually at 100-300 Million, but I've had one hit as high as 2.5 Billion) and used that to buy so many cargo pods full of materials. I would have preferred cheaper rockets, but Paradox only starts with one (they get a second free now once you scan 30 anomalies) and the suckers take a whopping 80 fuel to refuel. Thankfully Martian Engines reduces that to a measly 65 fuel.

Speaking of making money, I'm on sol 13 and got the Armageddon event where I was given notice that if I didn't launch my only rocket, Paradox' colony was going to die. This was during a longish dust storm that was already kicking my rear end so I probably should have said no, but I couldn't let em die.

So, my only rocket is gone and I have... 1945 MM$ in the bank. Even if I research crowdfunding I'm still 55 MM$ short. Is there any way out of this?

Edit: ahahaha nevermind, all the other colonies sent me another rocket and a bunch of pods full of resources as a thank you

The drones will only do work within range of their drone controller. When you place a building out of range there should be a little warning that there's no drone controller in range. If this is the case you will want another drone hub or rc commander to get drones to where you want the building.

If the building is in range of a drone controller but there's not enough resources in the command area, then you'll either need to move them over there with an rc transport, or, if you have overlapping command areas, set up depots in the overlap so that both controllers can share resources.

e: you can also click on drones and manually control them outside their controller's area but this is a pain in the butt and you definitely dont want to do it for a fuel refinery

Unlock shuttles. No I'm not joking, shuttles will try to make sure every depot has enough materials to meet their minimum requirements (specialized depots are default set to 0, universal depots are set to 3, but you can change both of these).

However I'm assuming that's not an option without restarting so what I generally do is place a universal depot next to every drone hub, and make sure every drone hub's range can cover it's neighbor's universal depot. This means the the drones will do their best to bring each depot up to it's minimum (3 by default) by stealing from each other, or from other specialized depots (it's good to have these near where resources are produced). It's a slow system but it works to even things out.

Or if you have an RC transport pick up what you want from your main base and drive it out there.

Yeah I have the shuttles (I used to work at JPL so Rocket Scientist was a natural, just didn't realize what the shuttles were). How do I get drones to repair stuff? I moved a commander within range of the repair but nothing happened.

Also at the start, do you just keep building Solar Panels and batteries for power?? I keep running out of power. I've used a couple of stirling generators, should I just depend on them?

You probably need supplies in order to repair it - click on it to see what it needs and then drop it off nearby. For power, you want a mix of Solar Panels and Wind Turbines for power. Solar panels use metal and only work in the day. Wind Turbines work all the time (and get a bonus depending on height) but require concrete (which is easy to get) and mechanical parts, which are a lot rarer. Generally a mix is good, along with a few batteries. You can also turn off factories and extractors at such at night to save power when your solar panels are down - fuel refineries and concrete extracters are good for this, since once you've got a stockpile you don't necessarily need them running 24/7.

You need to make sure drone hub service areas at least slightly overlap and put a universal depot in the overlapping area, also make sure to put universal depots near the hubs themselves. Your drones will travel back and forth to make sure each depot has supplies in it.

Yup. Late-game you can get shuttles to bring needed supplies from far places but they of course need fuel.

Paradox Interactive traveled into the great beyond to settle Mars not out of any desire to expand humanity into space, set up a research station, exploit far off resources. No, we headed to Mars to set up the coolest, most awesome game development office, literally making video games in space! A station on Mars where you didn't have to be some super-human astronaut with a PHD to travel, just the bare minimum training to survive the trip and an interest in working in the coolest game developer on TWO planets! You hear that Steam, we're making games on Mars! Yeah, you're no longer cool, and you haven't made actual games in years anyways!

They told us we were fools to travel without any plan, that the while idea was some Libertarianism stupidity. We'd be better off to buy an old cruise ship and go sea-steading. That we had no idea what we were getting into. That we had chosen a section of Mars with no natural resources to exploit even for our own use. And in the end we proved them right! Oh man this was a bad idea! But we persevered, we set up our initial small domes and a handful of offices we went to work. And soon...we released our first game and the novelty of a game made on Mars proved more profitable than we could imagine! And it continued to pay off as we worked through crop failures, flaky oxygen recyclers, power brownouts, meteor storms...slowly building up and improving our systems as we sent game after game after game. Sometimes we'd only make a few hundred million, sometimes we'd release something amazing like Crusader Kings IX which netted a whopping two point five BILLION dollars for us to spend. And soon, it became not a challenge, not a dream, but a lifestyle as children were born, raised, lived and died supporting this mad Martian game company. Forever toiling in the mines digging up the very copper and gold we used to print new processors, or working in the gift shop selling pictures inspired by Cities: Skylines 3K.

Then we realized...what if instead of hiring and breeding developers...what if we just made them. And soon we were the leader in human cloning (an admittedly still...rather open field). Immigration was banned, as was procreation. No, from now on everyone at Paradox Station would be a clone, property of the offworld station itself! And when their clone bodies wore out, their minds would be transferred to a new clone body, as the body itself would be dropped into the recycling tanks to feed the rest of the studio, making sure any knowledge that could be stored within their bodies was save...yanno, just in case that actually works.

And now it is nearly Sol 250 since the mission started and Paradox Station, a station made entirely out of clones is the premier Martian colony. Supplying food and resources to the other colonies. Especially the Japanese colony who seems weirdly eager to purchase our Soylent Green. Apparently it's a sort of delicacy there and we must say as clones we find that weird. Profitable but...weird. Like seriously guys, you're weirding out clones. You guys know those are our dead bodies right? Oh. Oh, you do know? Weirdos...

So yeah, storycrafting aside I think I've played this colony about to completion. Started with Paradox Interactive founder, and ended up settling on a map tile that had no resources besides concrete and a water deposit, no metal/rare metals anywhere nearby. Ended up funding everything from a trio of Game Developer buildings at the start, letting me order so many resource pods to support my colony. I ended up with this crazy and perhaps a little hosed up trifecta of Soylent Green, Cloning and Project Phoenix. So the only people who lack the "clone" status are those reborn via the Phoenix Project which...makes them clones technically I think but without the quirk so they don't have halved lifespans. I have to say going 'screw self sufficency and just make money' is really one of the potentially best ways to start a colony in this game, especially with the resupply pods. Seriously, when I built the radio telescope I literally imported about 200 of the electronics I needed and still had money left over.

Link up your copy of Surviving Mars with a Paradox account.

You get more breakthroughs, bonus applicants upon researching said breakthroughs, but rockets cost hella more fuel (80 per launch, 65 with Martian Engines).
Your unique buliding is a Game Developer (large in-dome building footprint, takes 3x shifts of 3 people to generate points towards a video game release. Basically constantly works towards a a sporadic $100M to $2,500M payday) while your UU is a "Jumper Shuttle" that launches itself ballistically over the map to travel super fast.

Edit: also if you land a colonist on Mars by Sol 15, you get a free Jumper Shuttle Hub so you really don't need to go Rocket Scientist with them since a free shuttle hub prefab is baked in.

there are two things to pay attention to at the start - your baseline power load, and your daily peak power load

baseline power is all the things that are always on. domes, life support, critical production, stuff like that. you want to have enough windmills and sterling generators to cover this at all times. windmills are much cheaper than stirling generators, but i like to have a stirling on hand because you can shift it into extra power mode in an emergency (shift-click to shift all your stirlings at once)

your peak power load is going to include all extra production both inside and outside of domes. this can be a ton of power use, manufacturing particularly so. one of the big reasons to schedule shifts for factories is to manage power usage, especially in the early game when you don't have enough engineers to fully staff your factories. since this activity usually happens during the day, solar panels are great for covering this load

for example, a basic dome (15) drone hub (3) concrete extractor (5) fuel plant (5) moxie (3) vaporator (5) infirmary, diner (2 each) blah blah is 40 power. thats eight windmills, assuming no bonuses for height or the early unlock polymer blades

but a machine parts factory consumes 50 power per shift. you could power that with windmills that are always on and producing surplus power, or you could have ten extremely cheap solar panels that flip on during factory hours. if you're not looking out for it, industry will completely suck your batteries dry. but if you carefully manage your power production you won't need to fool around with batteries except as a backup in case of disaster, or when your colony logistics become too complex to minmax

personally i like to use solar panels as much as possible in the early game, to power my concrete and fuel/water production, which i just shut off at night. the other advantage here is that you don't have to connect fuel factories or concrete plants to your overall grid, and later if you want that extra third shift back you can just replace each solar panel with a windmill
