W/e though, I'll leave you to your dreams of a fantasy land where everything is sunshine and flowers. You clearly have no interest in what it takes to get there. Lol I find it funny that you are so condescending when you don't actually organize for change at all, are constantly wrong, and don't even take the time to educate yourself about alternatives Apparently your solution to the world's problems merely is voting democrat and that lets you be a smug know it all? Building a socialist movement, especially in America, takes time. Building socialism will take time. Programs that we will implement on the way there will benefit the majority of people. But apparently you think policy goals like singlepayer healthcare, worker ownership, et all are impossible without actually doing any of the work to build support for those things. Lightning Knight posted:The point, and this is key, is that in an alternative timeline where we did not drop either nuclear weapon but the Soviets still declared war and invaded Manchuria, the Japanese still almost certainly surrender at this point. Perhaps it wouldn't have come as swiftly, but the reality that the Soviets were within striking distance of the mainland was still an existential threat for them with no escape. The big question is this: what's the tipping point? Is there ever a point where the Japanese Emperor makes the conscious decision, in the timeline where the atomic bomb is never dropped, that it is not worth fighting anymore? The situation at the time did not suggest as much.

Xae made a variation of this argument that I think is actually compelling and I concede is a decent one, and even in his post he notes that the US had alternatives re: offering Japan specific terms. I think I would argue that the important point is that there were alternatives to "let's vaporize two cities and kill hundreds of thousands of civilians" that went unexplored, and given that they had reasonable chances to bring about a similar outcome, simply declaring that the nuclear bombings were absolutely necessary seems facile. From this point forward, shut the gently caress up about the nuclear bombings of Japan unless they are actually materially newsworthy today. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Is there ever a point where the Japanese Emperor makes the conscious decision, in the timeline where the atomic bomb is never dropped, that it is not worth fighting anymore? The situation at the time did not suggest as much. That's flat out not true. It's generally agreed that the Emperor was resigned to the fate of losing, and the generals were the ones wanting to continue, there's no reason to think that Hirohito would never have called it off. Furthermore, there was miscommunication between Japan and the US (it's uncertain how intentional this was, it could have been to some degree mistranslation), and there is reason to believe Japan was trying to open a door to talks before the bombing of Nagasaki. Everyone who is saying it was the bomb or something worse first of all can't know that for sure (all historical what-if conversations can never be won), and also seem to not care about learning any details or facts about it. I think this derail is stupid, personally, as most of the derails and rehashed arguments are getting, but people who are casually excusing the use of the atomic bomb or what-abouting it need to take a hard look in the mirror. edit: Posted before seeing the request to drop it, so no more out of me. From awhile back but it's not an exciting story. I was walking to the store and minding my own drat business when a car of stranger rear end white dudes drove past hollering epiphets and threw a loving full rear end Gatorade(??) bottle at me. It only hit my ankle (it was summer and I was wearing shorts) but it hurt like a motherfucker.

It goes back to that video from the Alt Right Playbook guy. There is logic in comporting yourself in the way you demand your opponents comport themselves, but Process can't be an end unto itself anymore. The enemy has made it very clear that they can't be trusted and that they will break any rule they want to get their Ends. If they took a power away from you, even if you think that power existing is fundamentally right, you cannot and should not give it back to them because they will never let you have it. Unless it has some tangible benefit for you to give it to them. See the debate about Schumer putting back the judicial filibuster if the Dems had won the Senate. That arguably could have had benefits until Trump leaves office. In the case of subpeona power, there's no benefit in giving it back because it's only going to be use for obstruction.
