I was talking to my mother the other day on Skype. I was standing in a big parking lot at the time, and when I explained where I was she asked if there's any Toyotas around, as my parents have just purchased some new Toyota hybrid thingy and they were interested in seeing if I had seen any of that model around. I look around and point my camera towards a nearby Tacoma. "Well, not a lot of Toyotas around, but there's this. Some pickup truck, I think it's a Tacoma." Mom: "Oh, it's one of those Taliban cars!"

I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. the rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn't start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety Explanation two: GoPro

What scares me most is not the thought process that lead to the design, but the fact that the handle is welded on. Poorly.

Also the Soviets dumped a ton of those guns in the middle east as military aid so there might be a ton of ammo left that came with them in the first place.

Lebanon and Syria in particular used the StG44 forever in reserve service. It's gets even weirder than that though. In certain areas of Pakistan the 8mm Kurtz was popular as a conversion caliber for AKs, 7.62x39 being proscribed. They call it 44 bore, or did, until the practice was banned in 2012.

Here's video. Landed hard due to too steep a descent, resulting in tailstrike and buckled landing gear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aydbBl6_W0

From youtube comments, no clue of veracity. quote:To put the debate to rest: My father has just retired from the RAF after 30 years as an engineer. He was a Harrier engineer. He has detailed knowledge of this particular incident. This aircraft was a Harrier GR9 of 1(f) Squadron Royal Air Force. After an uneventful two aircraft sortie their landing back at Kandahar, Afghanistan was held off by ten minutes due to a busy circuit. When cleared to land ATC requested an expedite landing and runway clearance due to heavy traffic. The wingman landed first due to low fuel but received a hostile missile alert and released flares. ZG478's turn onto finals was too short and 6,500ft higher than normal. Throughout the approach the rate of descent was too high and 'Hover Stop' was selected in an attempt to correct this. At 180ft full power was selected but the tail struck the ground 30ft from the threshold. The outriggers and main undercarriage collapsed as did the nose wheel when the aircraft pitched forward. The under wing stores (bombs, rockets, recce pod, targeting pod and drop tanks) caught fire as it slid along the runway for 4,000ft. During the slide the pilot turned the aircraft away from a formation of four aircraft waiting to take off then ejected when it came to a stand. The fire spread to engulf the whole aircraft at which point the pilot ejected. The pilot was commended for staying with his aircraft in order to guide it away from other aircraft on the ground.

How do Vietnam era bomber crews sleep at night? I get doing your job to an extent, but bombing civilian infrastructure, irrigation canals, villages, etc to the tune of likely millions of innocent deaths seems to be well into the "just following orders" camp. Did any refuse to attack civilian targets?

Did any refuse to attack civilian targets? Innocent civilians were actually popular targets for US aircrew during Vietnam and they all sleep soundly in their beds to this day. To quote a passage of the memoirs from Major T.J. “King” Kong of the 843rd Bomb Wing, “your trolling is low effort, get the gently caress out of GIP.”
