colonelwest posted:I played my first 4 hours of Star Citizen tonight. I spawned at Port Olisar, called up my ship (apparently I got a Cutlass Black for the free fly event). At first I tried to buy some weapons, but the kiosk screens just kept saying the store was out of stock. Then I accepted a mission but all of my controls were bugged and my star map wouldn't display. Eventually I got a CTD. I reentered the game, and sat through a 15 min fidelity timer to get my ship back. Finally I just decided to go to Hurston to check it out. I soldiered through ten minutes of quantum travel and another 10 minutes to enter the atmosphere and land in Loreville, battling more glitching controls. I walked around the 2 main areas for awhile, and chatted with some people who were trying in vain to complete missions. I did manage to go to the bar and drink some fidelity whiskey, but I couldn't put it down and it was stuck in my hand for the next 10 mins as I walked around. Eventually I was able to throw it away and it then glitched threw the floor for a while as my framerate tanked. I got back to my ship, and flew around the planet for a while, landed near the ocean and then promptly fell through the map and died as soon as my feet touched water. I re-spawned in the Hurston Hab, but the exit was glitched and rendered as a hole in the wall. When I tried to walk through it, I fell through the map again. After that I had the urge to play a real game and logged out. Good report! I totally meant to try the free fly thing but then remembered it's poo poo so I didn't. I'll never make any cute or funny videos of it because I'm not funny or cute, so there's really not much reason to give it a shot. I may still, but chances are slim, friends.

I still believe the best aspect of Star Citizen is its worst enemy, where the more it comes out the more people realize the concept and core functionality is terrible. Anybody who has put even an hour of thought into thinking "ok, let's say it's all built, what will it be like?" has probably came close to, if not crashed into, the potential consideration that the final game will be a boring, unfun slog. People have known this for years, yet it's always fun when more still ignore it or have no idea, and dive right in expecting an, at the minimum, passable video game. Their shock and horror that it's terrible, bugs notwithstanding, is nice. Keep doing what you're doing!

I would like to inform this thread that I, a 38 year old male, am running off to join the original configuration (which was disbanded about 12 years ago, I believe) of the Sugababes. I have as much chance of hitting a pitch perfect verse of Round Round on stage with the 3 original members of a pop group who do not own the rights to the songs or band name as what Star Citizen fans have of ever having a playable game.

I'm loving the trip reports from thread regulars who actually played the game for the first time during this free fly weekend. It really is difficult to put into words how bad Star Citizen is - you have to log in and attempt to play it for yourself for it to actually click. For the backers, they see something on the road to completion. For those who can see this for what it is, we see something on the road to realization. CIG has been failing at the basics, so they've been making up for it by concentrating on the minutae. Can't get flight working, so here's basic ground movement. Can't get missiles working, here's whisky instead. I suppose the conceit is that they'll go back and fix the underlying foundation, but if they couldn't get it right before all these high-fidelity art assets were sitting there, what's the likelihood they'll get it right afterward? So, so many broken parts have been jammed into this dumpster fire sideways, all for the sake of screenshots, that the code is a loving broken jumbled heap of a mess. CIG is absolutely progressing, without a doubt, but not toward what the backers think they are. They're progressing toward a condition I call "code lock" - where there are officially so many moving and interlocking parts that it's literally impossible to add another piece to the code without breaking everything, but also, the basic functionality of the product was left out, so what you do have isn't fit for the purpose it was built for. Not to start an OS war here, but Microsoft has veered dangerously close to this territory a few times by forgetting to actually put an operating system in their operating system, such was their desire to fill it with complete poo poo nobody cares about. Now we're seeing it play out with Star Citizen.

I think it's been pointed out in this thread before that some of the most obstinate backers will become some of the most aggressive detractors once their Cognitive Dissonance Field is finally depleted. At the rate CIG abuses their backers, that has been taking less and less time. I wonder if Chris is aware of how quickly his monster is willing to turn on its maker, or how close it is to happening.

This especially is delicious when you consider their early narrative was "Star Citizen is Freelancer done right, without an evil publisher ruining everything!" Double irony points for the lack of backer realization that everything they did like about Freelancer didn't come from Chris Roberts, since all his work had to be discarded. His final credit was "Original Concept" which is the participation trophy of game credits, minus the participation part.

Nice little bit of game play today. A contract waypoint puts me on Yela in the middle of nowhere. I'm to collect three toxic waste boxes and transport them off world. - I know, it was the highest paying contract at the time - Smooth arrival, I'm alone so I put down my Drake Cutlass to one side of the habitat. In I go. I locate the boxes and bring out the first one. Hovering over the front of the habitat as I exit, pointing right at me is a rather fetching looking ship. All pointy and menacing. I'm assuming an Arrow at this point. I play it calm and walk to my cutlass and place the first box inside, close up and head back to the habitat. Once inside I hear bangs and explosions. I fear the worst. After it's all calmed down I exit with the second box and straight away notice a Connie parked near the habitat. Turning to find my ship I see it smoking and minus it's two engines. The Arrow is hovering a little way off following my every move. It's pilot has purposely pinpointed the engines to save the cargo inside but ensuring I can't go anywhere with it. Feeling totally trolled I continue towards my cutlass. I have a thought. After placing the second box in the hold I repower up the ship, leave the pilots seat and enter the upper turret. I slowly slue it around until it's facing the Arrow. It doesn't move and seems unconcerned. I fire 6/8 rapid shots taking away the front shield. Clearly the pilot is spooked and turns very quickly away. Straight into the mountainside. Hassar. A small victory! Unfortunately doesn't' change the fact I'm stranded. I try and reach the Connie pilot on local chat but I'm ignored. I decide to go over and start face to face communication, but as I approach the Connie takes off and leaves me with no further options. That is until I see a dark shape slowly coming towards me low over the distant mountains. Fearing the worst and thinking I'm going to get strafed I hide behind the nearest rocks. The dark shape turns into another Cutlass and proceeds to land. It's pilot lowers the rear ramp and runs out towards the habitat. LEAVING THE RAMP DOWN! This is too good a chance not to take. I sprint over to the Cutlass and as I get very close shots are starting to land close by. I run straight into the cargo hold, through the front airlock and into the pilots seat thinking there is no way this is going to work. The engines start and I lift off closing all external doors as I do so. I spin the ship around and see a small person firing up at the ship. It's previous owner. As I fly up out of the atmosphere setting a course for PO it occurs that the last 5/10mins have been enormous fun.

In retrospect it's also humorous that this game's "mission" is to transport 3 "toxic cargo boxes off world," boxes so small you can carry them in your arms, but in doing so we've left the smoking heaps of several hundred to thousand ton space-faring ships everywhere. It's probably a fair exchange. Really for the health of the planet the important thing to get rid of was the commando himself, and he made it, so that's a win for "Yela."

And that's basically what the citizens are doing. They've got a rubbish tip and they're running around using their imagination to pretend it's a magical kingdom. The desire to escape into a fantasy world is so strong with the citizens, I don't think I've ever seen a game community like it.

The Rabbi T. White posted:Pity their games were literal gutter trash compared to the Lucasarts ones. I'm still traumatised from one puzzle on I think it was KQV where you never really got to see the puzzle you just died every time you walked onto the next screen until you had the right item, I can't even remember what it was but the days and days of frustration at loading up and dying in seconds until I had the right fairly random thing sticks in the brain. It stood in such stark contrast to the Lucasarts option - use the plank rather than an oar as a makeshift step and you got several minutes of hysterical song and no death. GAME DESIGN ARGH. King's Quest could be very pretty though, there's a pattern here somewhere.
