Yes to all of that. On top of that, there are exploits that allow you to get underneath the map 'mesh' or whatever and attack poo poo with impunity.

Even if that weren't the case, the PvP is just insanely imbalanced. First off, the stat gains you get from leveling up make it so a high level player will always wipe the floor with a low level player. Not to mention high level players can make like, guns and poo poo. You can and will get raided when you go offline, even if you managed to stay competitive which would require second job level of commitment.

And lets assume none of the above were true. The vanilla rates for gathering/taming/breeding/etc are just outrageous. Taming dinosaurs is ridiculously time consuming under vanilla settings. We're talking sitting next to a high level dino and periodically feeding it for like 8 hours type of thing. And breeding? That takes even longer than taming. It's very much not OK. The game is designed to be played by a semi-large tribe that has multiple people on 24/7.

I realize I just trashed the game but I should add its one of my favorite games of all time, I have over 600 hours on it. It shines when you play it with a small group of friends and try to avoid spoilers, then its a magical fuckin gaming experience.

ONI thread here

It's very fun but depends on how much you enjoy depth. I really enjoy it but the complexity of the last several updates has started making my head spin. It was the same with Minecraft; once electrical engineering became part of it, I just tuned that out.

This isn't a detriment of the game, just my personal preference.

I bought Arc and the expansions, but then I realized it would be an approximately 5,000gb download and I went back to playing moddend Minecraft. No game is worth that much hard drive space :colbert:

Just about exactly my experience. I've gotten far too addicted to SSDs now, and playing a >150GB game off a NAS seems like a recipe for disaster.

SSDs are cheap as chips these days, and a 150GB game really isn't that bad. I've got an SSD purely for games, and I usually ever only binge on a couple at a time. When I stop playing one for long enough and there's another game I might binge on, I just rotate them out.

I had a look and you're not kidding, the prices have really gone down these days. Ended up ordering another 500GB SSD. Still though, the ~180GB w/ mods and saves is a good chunk of space.

Qubee
May 31, 2013

agreed it takes up a lot of space, but tbh I don't know what most people use SSDs for other than installing the OS onto it (for fast boot times) and games (for quicker loading times). I store all my documents like Word, Excel, etc on a regular hard drive. So in the grand scheme of things, 500GB might not be a lot, but it's plenty of space to rotate a bunch of games out of as and when you need to. most games are less than 100GB.

that being said, Ark Survival is poo poo for having such a huge space requirement, jesus.

It's very rogue like in that very little is explained and you just kinda gotta go around and do stuff to learn. I couldn't really get into it for that reason.

The Long Dark is great as long as you pretend story mode doesn't exist. Which is kind of nuts when you realize the devs were originally going to only have story mode, and survival was their beta testing sandbox that surprised them with its popularity.

Supposedly they're reworking story mode(including the stuff that's already out), but I doubt they're changing the actual backstory much.

Horror story i heard include the story tutorial teaching you why bear is scary by making it mandatory to approach close to a bear to progress. It’s dumb.

Agreed with this explanation. I put a handful of hours into Wayward on a long flight and felt like I had my fill of it. It's brutally unforgiving your first five or six worlds until you learn which mobs to run from when you're still low level (hint: it's all of them), and which gathering items you need to prioritize in the early game. If I recall correctly, some of the core progression is locked until you find a specific item randomly in the world, which makes the difficulty curve skew weirdly from game to game.

Once you have a garden and water purification set up created, you basically have the survival aspect completed, and after that it becomes a bit more of a dungeon crawler. It's not a bad game by any means and is worth the current $6 on Steam.

It feels way too tutorial-ish. It's got tons of dumb busywork blocking progress, which would've probably been fine if story mode would've been released first.

But sandbox is way better in terms of gaming experience, especially now that you can customize a hard difficulty in terms of scarce resources but also not as many wolves as the old "hard" difficulties would've meant.

Also the story itself is kind of dumb and cheesy, and not in an amusing way.

Exploring Milton(the new map made for story mode) in survival mode was way more fun than dealing with the generic plot beats story mode forced on it.

CuddleCryptid

Things could be going better

TLD also has strong themes of isolation, having to move not for plot reasons but just to survive, slowly dismantling the remnants of society as you get increasingly desparate for any form of sustenance, and the true danger being the environment itself. All of which are totally ignored in the story mode since you visit each location once, steal all the wood and beans, and then move on to the next area.

Ivan Shitskin

Does the story mode use the same locations and maps as the sandbox mode?

As an example of this: the first part of story-mode has you doing a bunch of fetch quests to collect wood and other stuff, so that you can get to grips with some of the essentials of the game. It's tedious and pretty annoying for those of us who'd already played the game inside and out in sandbox mode, but understandable for new players. Then you have a bit of a journey before you get to the next area of story-mode. While you're doing all this, you will invariably just learn the basics anyway, like how to harvest rose hips, how to make mushroom tea, how to make bandages - whatever. And yet when you get to the next major NPC, they also send you on a load of fetch quests to do all that poo poo again, like you haven't just been playing the game for the last 2 hours. So yeah, the tutorial aspect of it drags on way too long. Hopefully that's what the rework somebody mentioned is going to address (in addition to the awful writing and dialogue).

Qubee
May 31, 2013

That's the worst kind of tutorial, especially for a game like TLD that doesn't really need such a cumbersome and tedious teaching method. So much of my own personal enjoyment came from figuring that stuff out myself, before the campaign was a thing. It's not brutally unforgiving, but you quickly learn how to survive. The learning curve isn't insanely steep either. So the whole handholding thing doesn't make sense.

I ended up switching to sandbox when after I completed an objective where I needed to make a harrowing multi-day expedition across multiple zones and back the game told me I need to prove I can survive to progress past that with 3 tedious objectives where I needed to do really basic survival stuff.

It's baffling because if I didn't know how to do any of that there is no way I would have been able to complete the previous objective.

I mean I still appreciate the sense of an objective but it should honestly be either "find a way off the island" ala Subnautica or simply "survive the winter" or something along those lines. There is a middle-ground between well you're inevitably hosed regardless of how long you survive and Chinese Bitcoins crashed the economy and you must pick up 100 sticks to proceed

Jawnycat

I somewhat enjoyed the story mode, though I did play through it first before I even touched sandbox mode, I feel if I did it in reverse order I probably would have disliked it, cause yeah, it did get real stupid tedious at times, specially that 'prove you can survive' bit as has been mentioned. Man, the timescale of chapter two felt all fucky. And I've got zero desire to play them again till chapter three is out. But I do want to see where the story goes.

But I believe the devs have stated they plan to retool the first two chapters for the release of the third, taking all these complaints to heart, least I hope. I know they plan to redo a bunch of the dialog and de-tedius the quests at least.

And yeah, sandbox is great, hands down one of the best survival games.

i am definitely over games that don't have a definition of what "survive" means. if i wanted a simulation of the doldrums of a subsistence lifestyle i'd go hire myself out as a farmhand in some shithole ranch in north dakota. give me some goals to go for and end it cleanly in victory when i hit there. the scenario mode for TLD was pretty much exactly what i wanted from the game - you have a goal, a starting point, and some challenges. go. figure it out, bitch. the sandbox mode bored me to tears because eventually you're literally just walking around outside to avoid cabin fever while passing time pointlessly, watching the time pass. the story mode is stupid because the challenges it puts in front of you are nonexistent and it constantly repeats itself patronizingly. all i wanted really was more scenarios.
