New diagonal crossings come online amid calls to fine distracted pedestrians

As two new scramble pedestrian crossing come online in the heart of Brisbane, there is a push to give police and council officers power to slap distracted pedestrians crossing roads with a $200 fine.

The new crossings, allowing people to walk diagonally across an intersection, were announced in September and introduced on Wednesday at the intersections of Albert and Charlotte streets, as well as Albert and Mary streets.

As two new scramble pedestrian crossings come online in the heart of Brisbane, the Pedestrian Council of Australia has called on a $200 fine to be introduced for distracted pedestrians nation-wide.

It comes as the Pedestrian Council of Australia calls for pedestrians who cross the road while looking at their phone or while using their headphones to be slapped with a fine to reduce the number and severity of car vs. pedestrian incidents.

PCA chairman Harold Scruby praised Brisbane City Council's new scramble crossings because they reduced the wait time for pedestrians, minimised the time they spend in harm's way and therefore lower the chance of serious injury.

He said the pedestrian road toll was going through the roof and had reached "epidemic levels".

"If people are distracted both visually and verbally, they would not hear an emergency vehicle siren, a car horn or a 'watch out' warning," Mr Scruby said.

"We're putting a business case together based on the amount of pain and suffering it could alleviate.

"People are going to say we’re going to be nanny state with this, but we just want people to be aware of the dangers."

Mr Scruby said he wanted the offence of "crossing the road while distracted" to be introduced to give law enforcement a simple penalty in their arsenal.

"With this $200 penalty, it would make people aware that they might well get booked and will hopefully see a significant reduction in dangerous behaviour while crossing roads," he said.

"If you cross the road while looking at a screen or with your headphones in, you put yourself and others at risk because drivers have to swerve to avoid you.

"Why don't we use the resources we’ve got [council officers] to assist the police?"

Mr Scruby said the $200 fine was reasonable compared to the penalty for cyclists not wearing a helmet, $130 under Queensland law, which he believed was comparable dangerous behaviour.

PCA called for speed limits to be reduced to 30 km/h in built-up areas across the state earlier in the year after a series of fatal pedestrian incidents on south-east Queensland roads.

Roads that carry traffic through suburbs and across towns have a speed limit of 60km/h or higher, while built-up areas in Queensland have a speed limit of 50km/h.

Out of curiosity; If the next election were to result in a full blown catastrophe result for the LNP - say on par with what Campbell Newman did to the Bligh government in Queensland, what would that look like in terms of seats? Seat calculators don't really go that high.

I'm assuming next election will be extra rough for the Libs due to the potential for Phelps style center right independants taking seats that would never in a million years have fallen to labor.
