I'm suddenly regretting my promise to 100% the game AND the DLC, because the second DLC episode came out today and I found it to be... well, not good, at all. Oh well. Look forward to that part of the LP in a few months' time! :shepicide:

edit: Well, now that I've 100% completed the DLC on my main save, I feel I'm pretty much used to the new massively annoying enemies and gimmicks they throw at you. I'm sure things will be less frustrating the second time around.

I know this is a comics setting, but I still feel like the mayor calling in a PMC to police a city is a violation of so many laws.

I'm not entirely sure it's beyond a mayor's ability (at least in some places) to deputize people since they're in charge of the police as a whole, but they'd still be subject to the same legal requirements as regular police which these guys... yeah, not so good about obeying little rules like "no murdering people". So, bringing in "specialists" and giving them police powers maybe legally OK, hiring military psychos would get mayors arrested by the FBI if the state somehow failed to do it first. Not to mention SO many lawsuits would ensue. Kinda pointless really since a real life blatant terrorist threat like this would probably have National Guard deployed if need be without hitting the city books so bad.

I get my fun here. Enjoy!
There’s a lot of gray areas- Osborn is funding Sable out of his own pocket for one. And he has a serious threat on the streets with superpowers. No Avengers to be seen, no other superheroes available to help except a Spider-Man with a muddy public image. Also, if Guiliani were still Mayor of NYC and did something like this I can totally see our current president putting a positive spin on it. This isn’t a political board so I won’t say more about that.

i've been following along since the story so far has been fun and you've been doing a decent job showing it off. the actual combat and side-quest battle stuff has been boring as heck, i can only assume it's more fun to play than to watch. if the dlc is even giving you pause though, that doesn't sound promising!!!

Really? I enjoy the combat quite a bit, and one of the things that drew me to the game was seeing some combat gameplay and thinking it looked cool as hell. And when you're not being clobbered by annoying DLC enemies, it's also pretty fun. I had a blast getting that 135-hit combo in one of the hideouts!

If it's just my gameplay that is boring, I'll try to vary things up a bit more and I guess I could also try using some more gadgets in the future. I largely rely on the basic webshooters because they're the most versatile gadget you've got, and using the gadget wheel in the middle of a fight is kind of a pain in the rear end.

I think the suspension matrix works against everything if you've fully upgraded it. I literally never used it on my first playthrough of the main game, but it's been pretty handy in the DLC!

The guys you're talking about can also be handled just like regular shield guys, which means diving under the legs and hitting them from behind. Or you can dodge their charge and beat them up before they turn around, just watch out for their zappy crap they leave behind. Or, if you have a finisher stored, you can take them down with one of those. I think the main problem with those guys is that the game doesn't really teach you how to beat them, you just fight one right at the start with minimal instructions and then it's off to the races, and the next time you see this enemy he's accompanied by his bros as well as several other miniboss-type enemies like brutes and whip guys so it all just turns into complete nonsense. But like I said, I'll rant about the DLC combat design in due time!

i mean, different strokes for different folks, i guess?
just talking for myself here, but i think after watching like, the fifth random beatdown of goons doing crimes, it started feeling real repetitive. the boss fights and story missions are neat, i guess it's the open-world thing that's not grabbing me? i don't own a ps4 so i never paid any attention to the marketing material and can't comment on the second bit. but like, do what you find fun imo, i just appreciate you going to the effort of putting it out here

Oh, absolutely. I totally agree with what you're saying there, which is why I've opted to just cut out most of the open world crime stuff. Like, I'll make an attempt to show off each type of crime once, afterwards I'll just edit them out completely or just show a couple of seconds. Or, if the rest of the episode is Peter Parker stuff or something, I'll keep one fight in the video because you can't have a Spider-Man episode without at least one fight against some goons, right? :v:

I think the story and combat are both decent, better than a lot of games I’ve seen recently. Haven’t done the dlc yet- I’m waiting for all 3 chapters to make it a marathon- but from what I’ve heard they better give it a decent end. The game had one.

Episode 15: Hidden Agenda

Just what is Mr. Li hiding in his office?

Now, even though I say I'm leaving the lab stuff for the next video in order to keep this one from running overly long, the main reason for that is actually the fact we already have plenty of Peter Parker action in this episode and I didn't want to end it with a lengthy lab segment.

edit: Oh yeah, and in case you're wondering when the next RDR episode shows up, I actually have to get some work done over the weekend so it'll probably be Monday at earliest.

He did go public in the comics.

His family ended up having to move into Avengers Tower to be safe.

Granted, this had the amazing side-effect of Peter throwing Wolverine through unbreakable glass windows (about fifty stories up) after Wolverine insulted MJ.

Well he did go public in Civil War.

Long story short, he sold his marriage to Satan so Aunt May would survive being shot by the Kingpin.

Telling his loved ones is a good idea, though. I remember in the movies he's like "I can't be with you because my enemies would use you to get to me, Mary Jane." But the Green Goblin kidnaps her anyway and Octavius grabbed her before he even found out Peter was Spider-Man.

At least in the new movie(s) they nip that in the bud by having May find out at the end of the first movie.

There was a really good story by J.M. DeMatteis in Amazing Spider-Man #400 where right before she died, Aunt May revealed she had known Peter was Spider-Man for quite some time. Sadly, the story happened right in the middle of the Clone Saga so you had to deal with appearances from the underwhelming likes of Detective Jacob Raven, Dr. Judas Traveller with his merry band of idiots, and various Spider-clones, but everything in that issue involving Aunt May was fantastic and her death scene was extremely well done.

Now, once the Clone Saga was over, Marvel in their infinite wisdom decided that Peter really needs his 900-year-old aunt hanging around because otherwise the status quo isn't properly restored, so the Aunt May who died in ASM #400 was revealed to be a genetically altered actress hired by Norman Osborn. :pseudo: Oh, and at that point the real May didn't know Peter was Spider-Man, so we got all that good stuff with her freaking out about that horrible Spider-Man like it was the 60s or early 70s again. It was just like the last twenty years of stories never happened! Comics!

Yeah, the whole ‘status quo, keep heroes sad’ thing is what turns me off to comics too. Spider-Man’s marriage can’t last. Batman & Catwoman can’t get married even if the lead up writing and the long time coming makes you root for it. People can’t stay dead. Friends can’t keep trusting each other. Oh and it’s always ok for someone to go psycho or for evil to score a serious triumph, but not for charity or good to be victorious in anything more than a pyrrhic way. It’s nearly impossible for any story to have a good meaningful point or development on a lasting basis and I worry about the influence this has on other media and real life. Yeah I know a lot of sitcom tv is worse but that doesn’t help the situation. Oh well this isn’t the place to critique and effect change. At least the game is still great.

I appreciate being shown all the different types of crimes. One thing I’ll note- on Friendly Easy difficulty the crimes actually stop spawning once you complete 5 in each district. This kept me from seeing any Demon Bombing or Demons vs Sable events my first playthru which was disappointing in retrospect. Hope at higher difficulty levels they keep spawning. The Thug crimes come back at the game’s end, but not the Demon crimes (or the other two factions crimes we’ll see in Act 3) far as I have seen. I know you’re playing on Spectacular Normal, Doc. Do the Thug crimes keep spawning in Act 2 if you haven’t completed 5 in each area or are they gone till the post game?

DMorbid

I'm definitely still stopping thug crimes here and there in Act 2 but yeah, once you complete five of each faction's crimes in every district they'll stop spawning until the postgame.

Also, not that it matters, but the normal difficulty is Amazing. Spectacular is hard. :eng101:

Ah, that bites. Probably also the case that Faction other than Thug crimes are very rare if they exist at all postgame. That’s a step down from previous titles.

I’ll also note I do occasionally enjoy limited series comics. Status quo and out there story bs usually don’t show up in them as much.

Note that this sort of creative stasis is primarily endemic to the longrunning main universe superhero settings of the Big Two (i.e. Marvel and DC). There are tons of really worthwhile non-superhero comics that have actual forward momentum and often defined endings, and a fairly significant number of smaller press superhero comics/universes where things are less prone to status quo resets as well.

Like, I haven't kept up with it, but Robert Kirkman's Invincible went well over a hundred issues with actual permanent consequences for things and most dead characters staying that way, as I recall. (As well as things like the titular character flinging a trash bag into the upper atmosphere when initially discovering his powers and said bag landing clear across the world several issues later.) Or there's the Valiant Universe, now that they're back in action.

But I agree, between the constant resets to the status quo and the way books get assigned to creators of wildly varying talent level inside the same title and continuity, I find it really difficult to get into Marvel and DC's main superhero stuff for long. Mostly I just dip in now and then when someone good gets a chance to write one of them for a while. (e.g. Grant Morrison helming Batman).

Something I'd like to see in a follow up to open world games is a sequel with a direct positive consequence, like if Spider-Man got a sequel, Fisk decides to lay off Spider-Man and take a break from the criminal poo poo because he owes him, due to his daughter working in one of the buildings targeted by the Demons, and Spider-Man's actions saving her.

Anyway I've been meaning to update this and the RDR thread for a few days now, but haven't gotten around to recording commentary or doing much of anything because I'm a lazy bum (and unless something happens at the last minute, I also have a big work project coming up that'll take up the better part of the next couple of weeks). Now, before I record the next episode's commentary track, I'd like to ask the thread's opinion on how to handle gang hideouts in the videos. Should I keep showing off the whole thing and just devote a chunk of the video to fighting six waves of dudes, or should I just show the highlights? Those include Spider-Man's quips at the start of each wave, the call to Yuri or MJ halfway through the fight, any suit powers I might show off, and other funny or interesting stuff that might happen during these fights.

edit: I could also set the fights to music so I don't have to talk over them to make them more interesting

Episode 16: Change the World

Resolved not to let Norman Osborn break his spirit, Dr. Octavius is continuing his work despite the earlier setback. This time, things will be better. They must be.

We also visit one of the Demons' warehouse hideouts, and it would be impolite not to dress for the occasion. Despite its appearance, the Negative Suit doesn't actually have anything to do with Mister Negative and the Demons, and originally appeared in a 1998 comic where Spider-Man ended up in the Negative Zone and his suit lost all its color. The hideout itself has been edited down to the highlights because you don't need to see me fight six waves of dudes at this point.

Oh yeah, I completely mispronounce A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics, not AOL Instant Messenger) in the episode. It's an acronym and should be pronounced "aim", not letter by letter. Peter even pronounces it correctly right there in the video, so I was just being an idiot for some reason. Sorry about that!
