Also cammers make good money and furries inexplicably have tons of cash for fursuits and commissioning deeply disturbing artwork. They don't really apply here unless they're pulling out truck equity or using student loans to pay for that stuff.

Drowning in debt
https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/a153ii/drowning_in_debt/

quote:

Hey guys,

Through poor financial planning and bad decision making my fiancee and I have found ourselves in a pretty big mess and are becoming overwhelmed. I'm looking for advice on how to proceed in order to reduce our monthly payments to a manageable amount and be debt free (minus mortgage) within 10 years. Our current monthly payments are as follows:

Debt

Truck: $850 (5 years remaining)
Mortgage: $1022
Loan: $1252 ( $51,848 @ %10.99 4.5 years remaining)
Fiancee credit card: $180 (about $12,000)
Line of credit: $250 ($5000 balance, maxed out)
My credit card: $100 ($4000 balance, maxed out)
Tax related debt: $250 (about $4000 remaining)
Snowmobile: $380
Loan from fiancees mother: $300 (initial loan of $7000)

Bills

Home ins: $190
Cell: $300
Truck ins: $126
Car insurance: $40
Electricity: $250
Internet: $75

Total: $5565

I take home about $5600 a month with regular pay but have been working alot of overtime when it's available putting my average take home at about $6600. My fiancee takes home about $1200 a month but is trying to find a better paying job.

Ideally I'd like to be able to reduce our monthly payments to the point I can stop working overtime and still be able to put money away while paying down our debt. I am willing to give back the snowmobile and/or truck if need be but would prefer not to. So far the only other option I can think of is to try and consolidate the bulk of our debt into a 10 year loan but at this point that would be close to $85,000 and to me it seems unlikely that any bank would give us this loan. I don't think refinancing our home is an option as we only purchased it about a year and a half ago. At this point I am willing to consider any and all options.

Thanks in advanced!

I like that he thinks a $85k loan would solve this, except he already has 60k in Loans that didn't solve it.

Edit: Oh wait, comments are pretty good too

quote:

I had the house and the loan before buying the truck, everything else is relatively new debt. And a new high paying job got to my head haha I'm paying for that now for sure.

quote:

OK, good luck to you.

I hope you get through this, but at this point I have to say that you don't yet sound like somebody who wants to make the hard choices to get where you need to be.

What's the story on the $50,000, 11% loan? Prior consolidation?

quote:

It was used consolidate high interest debt and pay for renovations and appliances for the house.

So he bought a house, had a bunch of debt so he bought appliances and did a renovation with a new loan, then he bought a $70k truck.

purchasing a fursuit with a credit card?

i know that probably sounds like an idiot question and forgive my ignorance (hey i went to american public schools) but wouldn't a $1000+ fursuit be a good candidate for building a good credit score?

my mom is 43 and has never owned a credit card, so she has no credit score, which made is extremely difficult for us to find a place to live when my dad gave us the boot. naturally i don't want to end up in the same boat. i just turned 20, and i assume that's around the age that most people get bank accounts and credit cards? and i think i heard somewhere that you can't really build credit unless you buy expensive things. and i already own a car, so i can't use that to build credit.

just a thought i guess. i really know absolutely nothing about this kinda stuff.

He has a line for $190 Home Ins, I'd assume tax is rolled in there.

I guess he works/lives way up in Northern Canada so that explains/slight excuses some of the costs like a ridiculous cell phone bill.

He is arguing that he just can't get rid of the truck though.

What if that $850 is after he maxed out a home equity line to make a down payment and just got shellacked on the rate because he just fuckin' loves debt?

Or mayne trading home equity for truck equity because (and I'm going out on a limb here given the size of the mortgage payment) you can't drive your home out of the path of a wildfire (assuming he lives in the oil-producing Alberta prairie) is somehow a GWM move?

E: a chewy GWM center inside a BWM jawbreaker by carrying shitloads of debt on stuff that isn't covered by insurance, and maybe also underinsured to save $25 a month.

Wait, that's an interest only loan? At some point they have to start paying principal though? Or is Canada different?

Does anyone remember the Rooms 2 Go promotions where you'd get 5 years no interest/no payments? You just walk out with that whole suite of furniture and half a decade later you start making payments on the principal and 5 loving years of accumulated interest. They finally made those illegal. They can still give you 5 years no interest, but you have to at least make the payments.

I still see deals where you can buy a car now and make no payments for six months.
