Yeah idk I never really noticed I was having trouble concentrating or anything, I was just so used to only being able to get stuff done (either at work or on my hobbies or hell just poo poo around the house that needs doing) like, once or twice a month on "good days" that I thought that's just how everyone was. I was also super duper impulsive and irresponsible, and would chronically forget things when I walked through a doorway (like I know everyone has that happen but for me it happened nearly every time).

Then my psych pointed out I probably have ADD, and that I've probably had it since forever but I was enough of a dork that I made it through [most of] school without it being noticed. Got meds for it, was a bit rocky going at first (especially with that vyvanse cancellation bullshit) but it's had a tremendously positive effect on my life, like holy poo poo I'm somehow a functional adult now :aaaaa:

hey that kinda describes me. but i also have the 'tism somewhat counteract it, and i asked docs this year about it and they said meds have so many side effects i might as well keep on truckin without since i'm not cripplingly add

i heard this same story on my way home from work and my eyes nearly rolled out of my head. it was her husband's dealership and she was complaining that all the travel and shopping she was doing before the crash was "too boring."

I think it was a “make lemonade out of lemons” segment but the messege felt more like “economic downturns and wealth transfer to banks is good, actually” and did little to discuss why people had to bail out the banks in the first place while being repaid for their bail out contributions by losing their livelihoods

I used to npr all the times but it’s getting harder, especially when they have guests from the heritage foundation on their show to discuss welfare reform.

i took her segment to almost be a plea for sympathy, like "abloo hoo i used to be so stinking rich my biggest problem was inadvertently staying up late at night." also i know i'm ignoring the fact that she raised her son during that time, and that she is making the lost dealership lemon into lemonade (instead of complaining about not being rich anymore), which are good things, but the smarm coming out during that initial part of the interview left a bad taste in my mouth (ears?).

also jfc about the heritage foundation and welfare reform, yikes. i usually catch a bit of morning edition and local stories on npr in the morning, then marketplace and maybe a bit of the daily on the way home at night, i had no idea they were up to that kind of poo poo.

I think I can actually pinpoint what did it (or at least when they stepped up their game): A few years ago morning edition ran a series of stories on the Koch brothers' political tendrils, then it ended and not one week later morning edition was suddenly "Brought to you in part by Koch Industries, did you know Koch Industries employs over 50,000 people nationwide?!"

gently caress dealerships anyway

guaranteed that woman wasn't as bad off as she made out to be slash they cherrypicked the poorest one that lost a dealership and that's what they could come up with.

between the licensing laws and the bans on direct sales dealerships are basically little rent-seeking fiefdoms and there's no way at the least they weren't able to write off hundreds of thousands of dollars in business losses against future taxes.

Most people don't own a fuckin' business much less a dealership or even a home.

It's heavily based on where the programming comes from tbh. American Public Media is super duper right-leaning and has been forever, and they make shows like Marketplace that are basically capitalist propaganda. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is somewhat better but still skews center-right. Shows by local NPR stations or independents are a mixed bag of course, and sometimes this is hilariously clear - for a while my old NPR station went right from Marketplace Morning Report to fuckin' Democracy Now playing rabble-rousing organized labor folk songs and talking about how evil the USA is, it was quite the whiplash.

Yeah I don't think anyone complaining about "liberal bias" in the media has ever actually heard a genuinely left-biased news broadcast so they just assume it's "anything that's not fox news" or "anything that thinks gays deserve human rights" or w/e

Like I loving wish there was a left-bias in the media, maybe it could make the greater public aware of just how hard they're all being hosed and that there are solutions to problems that aren't just "ignore them" or "blame mexicans"

Here’s something to think about : Don’t knock the rich. When were you ever hired by a poor person?

quote:

I don’t knock the rich. I never got a job from a poor person!

quote:

One other thing that really bothers me—and I don’t know how to put this in a better way—I never got a job from a poor person. I have always gotten a job from someone who had some money.

quote:

It happened off camera, so none of us saw it, but Labor Secretary Robert B. Reich couldn’t hold back his Harvard chuckle when a young man on “Nightline” said: “I’m poor, so you know, if Clinton taxes the rich it doesn’t hurt me any. But one thing you’ve got to remember is that the poor man never gave anybody a job. You’ve got to take care of people that can start businesses and run businesses and help those survive and be strong.”

quote:

People say capital gains is for the rich, but I’ve never been hired by a poor man.

quote:

Not long ago a New Jersey painter was quoted in The Washington Post as saying: “You’re looking at a poor man who thinks the capital gains tax [cut] is the best thing that could happen to this country. People say capital gains are for the rich, but I’ve never been hired by a poor man.”

quote:

As for the state’s fiscal crisis, it’s Arnold and Arnold alone who wisely said: “Don’t knock the rich. When’s the last time you were hired by somebody poor?”

quote:

But as a Pittsburg pipefitter said of the same cut in capital gains taxes advanced by President Reagan 20 years ago, “It may be a tax cut for the rich but I ain’t never been hired by a poor man.”

quote:

… Mr. Pence said. “I’m mindful of what a pipe fitter once said to President Reagan: ‘I’ve never been hired by a poor man.'”

actually the only solution to any of these problems is dissolution of economic or political hierarchy and a recognition of labor-value as a fundamental economic input to create goods and services. yah sure a nationalized bank probably makes sense under an actually democratic society, but a nationalized bank is going to still mainly be a tool of capitalists in a capitalist society

most people have been so thoroughly propagandized to avoid thinking of an economy as allocating labor and resources to create goods and services. people have instead been indoctrinated to think of an economy in terms of maximizing some money or unit of exchange (USD, bitcoin, gold bars, what the gently caress ever) instead which is extremely different and leads to very perverse thinking completely divorced from reality

yeah unfortunately trying to open the "full communism now" anti-hierarchy stateless vision of qualitative revolutionary change ala Murray Bookchin and others is something that I totally disagree with but is really not something that interests people without an unhealthy and useless interest in the minutiae of political science. like, I'm still trying to explain why deflationary currency is different then regular state-issued money but its like a loving brick wall. the liberal worldview is so unbelievably monolithic that it can't really be properly addressed except one tiny part at a time, like trying to convince people to question the most obviously inconsistent parts of capitalism's attempts to deal with problems it creates, like banking

the liberal media brands itself as left and the conservative media brands the liberal media as left. this is basically the overton window in which the propaganda machines try to sharply limit the range of public discourse. part of it is also the media themselves wanting to frame themselves as anti-establishment to the viewers because they don't want to be perceived as organs of the establishment. if the media calls itself left, well surely that means they are aligned against the govt and corporations in the interest of its viewers. if the media calls itself right, that also conveniently means they are somehow nominally aligned against the liberal media and the govt in the interest of its viewers.
