Oh, yeah I didn't mean to say it was a charity convention, just that they have a gamer convention and also a separate charity that does a big whip around at those conventions.

Here I am once again with my reminder that a healthy industry means that people you find distinctly mediocre need to be able to make a lot of money.

Also, here is John Allison's Scary Go Round newsletter saying something sensible.

quote:

I awoke this morning to the news that I had not been included on a list of the "most influential webcomics ever". Someone was annoyed about it, and had decided to complain that another cartoonist was on the list, and I was not. They made sure I knew this, thereby alerting me to my original omission, which I would never have found out about otherwise. Let me be clear on this: I was neither angry about a reader's misdirected passion nor my omission from an arbitrary round-up.

One of the sharpest lessons I have learned from two decades in "the arts" is that one should not count the popularity of other people's work as a slight upon yours. You should not see the greater success of the person who has spent less time digging their ditch as a black mark on your self worth. Envy is a waste of time in a field where, no matter how you pander to market forces, you are hemmed in by the four walls of your personality. You can only pander to the extent that the devils in your mind will allow. You could no more be Susie Popular or Donnie Successful than you could shed your skin, grind your skeleton to powder, and make yourself anew.

Having witnessed the existential agonies of those one would imagine are at the very top of their field, my advice would be: just hoe your own row as hard as you can. It's yours and no one can take it away from you.

PA's side stuff like PAX is all infinitely better than the comic itself. For instance, Strip Search was a legitimately great show that introduced me to Erika Moen and Abby Howard. They really should concentrate on stuff like that (although I know that's all their business partners and not them).

It gave birth to Camp Weedonwantcha so they're still alright.

Nobody said they wanted him to die penniless and in obscurity, and frankly I think it's exhausting that "you resent his success" has to be re-litigated every time DC comes up. Tying this back in to the earlier Pictures for Sad Children discussion, people should be able to make a living while producing art and the amount of energy, life, and personal information artists have to share to justify why people should give them money is grossly unfair. Still, it's particularly galling to have to do this over Diaz when he's the prototypical guy who succeeded through woke posturing while leaving his own biases and privilege unexamined and unaddressed.

Eh I followed that for a bit and it never really clicked for me. The concept always felt better than the execution. Not terrible, but I just could never get invested in it like I have with other comics.

Megatokyo is insanely bad. As a thirteen-year-old, I got the first three volumes for Christmas. Volume One was hilarious, Volume Two was mediocre, and Volume Three... existed? I went through the whole online archive out of sheer inertia and it only got worse and worse. I can't imagine trying to read it now.

My pet theory at the time was that it was Largo's influence that kept the comic from becoming pure faux-anime wish-fulfillment bullshit, and once he left... well, we got what we got!

Pretty hilarious how Megatokyo was so bad that the one "good" part people STILL point to was the guy that thought L33TSP34K jokes were the height of comedy. Although to be fair, the alternative was lovely self-insert shoujo comics, so... Yeah.

Haha the title bar of the page STILL says "relax, we understand j00". What a loving time capsule.

why do you want to be friends so bad with the guy who screams drunken abuse at women via facebook and twitter blaming them for his lovely life. you act like its weird we know this but its because women talk about it and warn each other. what happened to your loving brain. can you get a grip on whatever is causing you to behave like this.

josh was also pretending to be a woman naked jackie and making another webcomic, the subject being "how do i make people pay attention to me again" as some sort of attempt at meta commentary on the comics community being too crowded. he set up a twitter account for "jackie" and everything, retweeting her new comics to his account until people found out it was him and he posted that it was all a "persona" he was doing. lol

Well at first it was a joke about how much pornography helped pay for homestuck, but then i felt tired about the kind of discussion it was becoming. I feel like its weird that i know, any of this because this feels like very personal life stuff, but i do not know josh lesnick. But i can discuss it. Here, with more strangers. Is that healthy? Did it feed into his problem? I feel weird that i was rhe one who brought him up! But since i did i thought i might as well extend broad, cartoonish empathy to what seems like a publicly sad man, at xmas time.

As for what happened to my brain, i guess im just a crazy and nutty guy!!

Oh yeah, I totally agree with that. Don't care to talk about that guy.

All I'm saying is that .. a particular variety of contrarinism is implied by bringing that guy up in the first place (in a post I still barely understand) and then being sad that people jump to mocking him, and it's the same variety of contrarinism I'd recognize from that zine argument. And that moment of connecting those dots was satisfying enough to comment on.

Sorry, this is a dumb direction for this comic to go. Let's change the topic.
