Exploration is ill-advised.
I recently watched a comparison video on TF2's Medic vs Overwatch's Mercy that made some interesting points on why one's popular and the other isn't; Medic's ubercharge is designed to break stalemates while Mercy's ult is designed to prolong them. Seems like possibly the deal with each game in a nutshell, maybe. Also, Mercy is a painfully generic White Mage who actually has less real personality than her average JRPG equivalent, while Medic is probably the most evil character in the entire cast and everyone loves him for it. (and manages to compete with titty space angel medic Mercy in the porn department, which is no mean feat)

It doesn't actually matter what your characters are in a video game, as long as they're fun to play and have some interesting moments and fleshed out aspects of their personalities at least implied. The most out-there and eye-catching concept will become utterly mundane and boring if you don't do enough interesting things with it, while the most two-dimensional cliches can become beloved if you aren't afraid to have fun with them.

TF2 was an incredible game at launch full of personality and charm but its been longer between now and TF2 than tf2 and the original team fortress so i think we are due another.

Also TF2 might have the best medic/healer in any class based game

Having to hold a button to sprint smh

It's worse than that in RDR2

If you just use the analogue stick you walk incredibly slowly
If you hold X then you jog lightly
You have to mash X to go at a speed that is tolerable

If you're within 100 yards of camp mashing X does nothing, and your light jog from holding X is reduced to a slow walk, and your regular walk is reduced to a near-sighted grandma with severe arthritis using a self-checkout till in a supermarket and trying to redeem a coupon that expired in 1987

There's a good game in there, and the characters, fights and scenery have been enough for me to nearly finish it (I'm on the epilogue) but there are so many bad things that frequently makes it a chore.

Rockstar is STILL doing mash button to run??! That always felt like punishing you for wanting to get around at a reasonable pace, and without the GTA excuse that you should be using a car.

Lol then they hosed up car physics to make them unfun to drive in GTA4

I just took a taxi everywhere in that game, it let you fast travel directly to the mission points. Same with RDR using the camp and setting a waypoint to fast travel.

Buried in the options menu of RDR2 is the ability to change the button to hold to sprint as well as unfucking the games aiming. Why these are options instead of default is a mystery, but at least on this the 8th loving go round they included them.

Yeah they now let you toggle the 'run' speed (normally holding down X, can now be set to toggle) but in order to sprint you still have to mash, and it doesn't affect the speed when you're on horseback, where you still have to hold X to gallop slowly or repeatedly press to gallop quickly. Because reasons.

I don't get why they don't just use the analogue stick to determine how fast to move and maybe clicking a stick/pressing a button for a limited, short burst sprint, like pretty much every other game for the last fifteen years since Halo came out.

Really is kinda crazy how Mario 64 got so much right the first time on how 3D platformers worked.

Reminded of a review of Spyro the Dragon in a Playstation magazine that reluctantly compared the game to Mario 64, since it resembled that formula a lot closer. (actually come to think of it Spyro was super ahead of its time. That the major collectables were also save points was pretty inspired)
