He thought he would lose, so did Putin, so he got Manafort, Guccifier, and the IRA to get involved to make sure he won.

Him, Cohen, and the kids thought they were grifting Putin and the GOP, and Putin played them like a loving скрипка.

No. He could probably run a business as president too, as long as he doesn't profit from foreign governments (lol) In practice we ask presidents to put everything they own in a blind trust after they are elected so that they don't have a bias while serving as president, but Trump is an evil corrupt grifting monster.

The issue with this hotel is that we all pretty much know (but may not be able to prove) that there was a deal struck between Putin and Trump. If Trump obeys Putin, then he'll get his hotel in Moscow. This was back when Trump didn't think anyone would care about Russia, but when Russia collusion blew up on him he stopped his hotel project..... for now. Undoubtably he's hoping Putin will enrich him when he no longer has to care about scandals.

Not illegal, just frowned upon. However engaging in what is looking like quid pro quo with a hostile government to further your real estate deals in exchange for sanction relief is uh...yea illegal.

I genuinely wouldn't be particularly surprised if SCOTUS up and rules that the President is inherently allowed to do everything Trump has done. Maybe stick something in about how this doesn't set precedent, like they did with Bush Jr. becoming president, just in case there's a Democrat up for trial someday

This is in fact the most likely outcome if it ever makes it that far. The fact that they got away with it once before is pretty much tacit approval of the tactic when its to their benefit.

as a friendly pedantic correction, domestic emoluments are also barred by the Constitution and the subject of multiple major lawsuits right now - while operating a business domestically isn't illegal in itself, profiting from it because of your status as president is. (and, as we're seeing with his hotel in DC, it's very hard to extricate normal business from people who want to stay at your place to curry favor with you - the court is about to set a discovery schedule in this case, so we'll hear much more on this topic in 2019)

but like with foreign ones, it's another situation where there is literally no case law because no president has ever brazenly refused to divest before

Not to make too much light of firearm accidents, but I can't help but feel there is some kind of intrinsic safety built into this situation, insomuch as those with the prerogative for packing a pistol in their sweatpants waistband probably don't have too big of a 'target' to worry about the ramifications.....

Avenatti did troll Michael Cohen into the whole Mueller fiasco so he’s pretty competent on that end. The defamation lawsuit that got SLAPP’d though was bad.
