So Tether is just like that receipt you get from the slot machine, except there's people walking around with two billion of them and the booth where you redeem them is closed.

Tether is such a wild concept to me. Not the part that some guys just printed out their own money with a clam that it was 1 to 1 a dollar in value. I get shady people trying wild scams to see what sticks. What gets me is some people actually accepted it and this has become an integral part of some exchanges. Some randos just print their own money and claim it equals a dollar and people just accept it. I've followed bitcoin the whole time and this is the hardest part for me to believe.

This is the most accurate description I've seen, yes. Also the genesis of it is an exchange being "hacked" and not having enough real money for people to cash out, so they were given tether IOUs

Doesn't seem that much harder to believe than all of the altcoins that lack even the most basic reason for existing beyond "pump and dump" that still get bought into. Tether at least pretends to have a value.

Tether at least pretends to have a value. Even that I can believe. People put their real money into a fake money on the chance that maybe some day that fake money is worth more than they put in. Dump as gently caress, but I get the basic premise. [real money] * [risk] = [more real money]. Most investing is some degree of that. Tether is like that, but without the possible increase in money. [real money] * [risk]= [Exact same money]??. It is like playing slots but the max pay out is only what you put in.

People just use tether to wager on riskier currencies on shadier exchanges that can't otherwise accept real money, I refuse to believe that anyone besides maybe Bitifnex actually holds significant quantities of Tether it's just a medium to facilitate the shitconi gambling

I think Tether also has a hardcore Wile E. Coyote effect going. They all know they're walking on nothing, but they won't fall until enough people look down... so they don't look down... and JUST maybe they can run all the way to the cliff on the other side of the chasm before that happens. (And now that I'm thinking of it, I'm sure bitcoin believers have used this exact metaphor for the dollar. Which just makes it funnier.)

I know this must've been answered a hundred times, but are there real people actually selling their bitcoin for tether? I just assumed the exchange "prints" tether and then buys bitcoins from itself making it look like demand is up. I mean I get this is highly illegal and they wouldn't need tether mumbo jumbo to put in fake buy orders anyway, but tether doesn't actually seem backed by dollars so it's not like it's any different. Basically, what the gently caress, bitcoiners?
