That seems less than ideal, might want to bring it up with maintenance after landing. The extra drag would probably affect fuel economy.

karoshi posted:One per child. I think I’ve told this story before here, but it’s pretty funny. I was on a United 737 SFO to IAD, I think. I was in an aisle seat about five rows ahead of the exit rows on the right. Two young boys were seated next to me. I’m not sure how old, but I’d say pre-K or K. I’m really not good at estimate ages. Anyway, I was not asked if this was acceptable. I’m a 30 something man. I found this weird. They were little demons. They kept asking for more soda, which they got, and started using straws to spray soda all over each other, and all over me and my laptop. I told them to stop several times, which obviously didn’t work. Anyway, I started looking around and noticed an empty row about 4 rows back. I moved back and got back to work. People started looking around and mumbling to each other, and looking at me. Eventually a man, maybe in his 40s, went over and spoke to the kids. A women sitting with him then came up to me and said “how can you just leave you sons alone like that?” I said, “I don’t have kids. I don’t know who those kids are and it isn’t my job to supervise them.” She wasn’t exactly happy with my response. By this time a FA came over to the row with the kids, but I don’t know what was said as I had my earphones in. Several people motioned to me a few times while talking to the FA. It was a bizarre experience. I’ve been flying mostly in First/Business the last few years and I hate traveling on the weekend because multiple seats will be filled with children. It’s really weird to see a family of 5 all seated in First when there may only be 8-10 seats total, when the kids are all under 10.

My last Royal Jordanian flight was my wife and I in first and the rest of the cabin was one family. Dad and I presume his brother passed out in 1AB. Grandma and Mom tending to a newborn in 4EF. My wife and I in 3AB and the rest of the kids going absolutely nuts in the rest of the occupied seats. Running down the aisle 30seconds before landing, yelling, crying, spilling etc. Was absolutely astonishing. That being said I have very few problems with kids on planes recently. My São Paulo to Miami flight was like 6 kids under 2 within 4 rows on either side and I expected the worst but every single one was a silent angel.

Unless it is truly alien, all technology is truly human. Our sub-conscious biases show themselves through our machines. For example, Amazon's robots didn't like to hire among minority populations, the Boeing 737 auto-pilot middle-manages airplanes out of the sky, and Bose won't let us ignore a small child wailing. Deus ex machina? More like dickhead ex machina.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone working on noise cancellation technology had a conversation that went something like: Tech 1: are there sounds people would want to hear? Tech 2: what, like a fire alarm? Tech 1: yeah, or foot steps, sirens.. things like that. Tech 2: oh and children crying. Tech 1: I don’t know about that, wouldn’t people wear these to block that kind of noise out? Tech 2: that’s messed up. Wouldn’t you want to know if your kid is crying? Tech 1: yeah, but not everyone else’s. Tech 2: well we’ll need to just not cancel out those frequencies for now and let AI sort it out in the future. AI: I’ve synthesized a sound that will quiet all other sounds. *AI plays sound of a baby screaming at 400db, destroying the lab and rendering everyone deaf* AI: now you can’t hear those noisy engines.

My first thought was: lol But after a while it occurred to me: who is meant to help them put their masks on in the event of a loss of cabin pressure? Do the flight attendants intentionally make sure there's always an adult near children - even if the adult doesn't want to be - so that they can do it? Or is it not unusual for children to be seated by themselves, and the attendants are expected to help them if need be? You'd think that if they expected you to look after them in any way, you'd be advised of that and asked if you agree, but that'd require competence.

So since most of the sound you want blocked is low and constant they just draw the line at some point.
