I have zero experience with the x series, mods will be a thing in this right? It sounds like mods really helped the previous game, I hope they do the same with this one in less time, because it seems that the base game is better.

Anyone with a joystick have recommendations from input settings? I selected the default profile but the throttle slider is inverted and so is up/down. Should I use the Saitek profile or something? I've got a Logitech Xtreme3d Pro.

It sounds like it's going for less auto-pilots and computers for everything and more pilots and you're actually in charge of people? That's pretty cool actually. I was a salvager/war profiteer with mods but it never made sense that I could do that and effectively have zombie ships literally everyone else couldn't, but even without that you could 'pilot' like two fighter wings and a TM pretty easily. It seems like the game's smaller scale but in a more reasonable and interesting way.

Still not sure if I want this, I never played an X game before, but I like space trading and big ships. When you pilot a capital ship, is there any activity on the bridge? Some npcs sitting at consoles would already be good enough for me. Or does it feel like commanding a huge ghosts ship?

I don't think anyone's gotten that far yet tbh, from sounds of it the most anyone has is a handful of ships. Fleets take a while to set up!

You can land on any friendly capital ship and go to the bridge and yeah there are dudes manning the consoles and walking in and out.

Anyone had advanced in the PHQ quest where the scientist relocates to the HQ? I'm stuck on that stage because the next quest step, after escorting the transport, is to dock at the station but docking doesn't actually progress the quest and reloading the game hasn't made a difference. Wondering if maybe there is another spot besides the dock we built that we're supposed to go or what?

Once he tells you to dock at the station if you go there you can use the transporter room you couldn't do anything with before to go to the new science lab room where he will be. Unrelated, scanning is tedious as hell, am I really gonna have to do this for the "main plot" missions beyond this?

Try organizing them into a squad, it collapses them. Or if you assign them to a station it does a similar thing I think. By the time you're operating loads of them you should probably invest in a station to base them at and refine the product.

Well the first patch hit, and somehow despite it only being 7 MB it's made the game refuse to load half of the textures even though it was working (mostly) just fine not an hour earlier. (I was having texture issues before, but usually resetting the game fixed em. Now it's 100% borked for now by the looks of things) Edit: Nevermind, fixed it myself. Ignore Past Me's salt. Small tip for people: The different races sell their own kinds of engines and shields, which have slightly different stats. The argon engines are faster than the teladi ones but the teladi have better shields than the argon. I haven't tried the paranid yet to see what they're good at. There are also turret variants but I don't know if they're anything other than cosmetic.Pylons posted:Hmm. I wonder if it'd be worth switching my silicon miners over to ore if I refine it. As far as I'm aware you would just assign them to the station and it would automatically handle their assignment to mine for either ore or silicon depending on what processing module you build. That's how it worked for Rebirth at least. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 21:12 on Dec 1, 2018 |

Well I'm glad Egosoft is working on the weekend to fix issues. On the other hand I feel bad for Egosoft working on the weekend to fix issues after all of the crunch time they did. I always thought that Monday releases would make more sense than Friday releases from a support perspective.

Hey so ... is there a way to hire people other than landing at a station and hoping to find someone with the stats you want? Funny enough, building a new ship that comes with a captain doesn't actually count as "hiring" that captain (according to the mini-quest the game gives you to hire one) but if you move him to a different position and then promote him to captain again, the quest procs (with no reward as far as I can tell.) I've got a mission that involves finding and retrieving lockboxes, but (in typical egosoft fashion), i'm not entirely sure what to do. I've found the lockboxes, but I can't seem to pick them up as cargo, going out in my suit doesn't seem to do anything, scanning them doesn't seem to do anything, and sitting near them doesn't seem to do anything. They have a padlock locked symbol on them, but that's about all the game is telling me. Any ideas folks?

After a day or so I guess I can attempt a small trip report, prefacing with the answer to the standard "should I buy it?" question. - If you've been around the block with X and have enjoyed your time with the series before, despite the problems (ignoring Rebirth), this is a no brainer and just go ahead and buy buy buy. - If you've played X before, but found it frustrating and the jank pissed you off, stay away for a few months - there's some time to go here before we get to TC/AP level of polish. - If you've never played the X series before, but want something fun and easy to get in and do pew pew, don't get it now - you're going to burn out on the jank and the incomprehensible universe and systems you're given. - If you've never played the X series before, but you're fine with learning a million systems and exploring an in-game universe that'll potentially keep you busy for a few hundred hours, wait a few weeks. Even though I've played all the X games, I found the first few hours fantastically straining. Since I only briefly played the previous entry, I struggled in recognizing with what is what, as there's no denying that Reunion was a strong base with TC and AB stuff added on top of it. It's certainly a confusing mess at times, but holy poo poo, does it have potential for the next few years to keep us busy. The interface in particular seems like a prototype more than anything else - the functionality hidden within gives a lot of ability to control anything from small to large empires, but the current visuals obfuscate everything to a degree that I fear most people will bounce off. After a dozen hours of playing, I'm still looking for a plot, other than the Player HQ, and with the Encyclopeadia empty on most topics, there's a lot of information missing and thus getting into the universe is a bit challenging. Still, the new world, highways, sectors and races have a degree of familiarity that make finding your way around much easier. I pity anyone coming in hot, though. The world is pretty great, though, and even the station walking kinda makes sense and works, although I do hope future stations will become more unique and perhaps vary in sizes, layouts and character. Stylistically, it's no Mass Effect or E:D, but it also has enough elements from both worlds that it stands on its own. The ship design in particular stands out. Gameplay-wise, the amount of stuff taken from E:D is marvelous, from the docking, to some of the combat dynamics and interface, and there's no shame in that. Too bad Frontier Developments wouldn't do it the other way around. Conversely, the systems in X4 feel small, but perhaps this is something Egosoft finally stopped obfuscating - if you look into system descriptions, they actually list low populations (in the few thousands range) and I suspect they might be actual numbers derrived from station and ship crews. I tried on a keyboard and mouse, HOTAS and gamepad setups and found the HOTAS + keyboard and mouse at hand the best, though the mouse+keyboard option is the most accessible and works out of the box for anyone. The gamepad option, while great on paper, seems to be not fully there, as assigning button combinations, at least on Xbox One controller, didn't work, which left me with too few buttons to competently get around. Performance-wise, with an i7 6700k and GTX 980, I've had no problems so far and in this regard, at least for me, this is the most stable X release in ages, from the technical standpoint.

So what the hell is with the leak repair missions? Hitting the blinking signal part does nothing, while hitting the source of it (the busted circuit models that the signal seems to actually come from) just results in a mission fail instantly. What am I doing wrong here
