Okay weird question, and I don't know where else to ask, but is there a bird watching thread on SA? I'm not really interested in bird watching per se, but I always spot this GIANT bird circling around a facility I frequent for work. The first time I saw it, on a sunny day, the 12ft shadow racing across the field made me jump. I looked up expecting to see a small plane or something, but no, just this absolute unit in majestic flight. That was like 6 months ago, and I still see it just gliding in circles around the area every time I'm there. And I really want to figure out what it is.

Krankenstyle posted:that said, circling shadows are in general very hawkish That's what I figured, but the biggest bird I've seen in my life was a sort of buzzard. Just chillin at the top of my driveway, I thought it was a dog at first. Anyway, I'll totally take a picture next time I'm there, but will that be any good? I mean I'm no expert, but it's so high up that I can't really discern features other than "big". The area is Williamsburg, VA for reference.

Im in denmark so i probably wont be able to identify american birds much, but my dad can go like chickenhawk, sparrowhawk, etc while literally driving a car by and while listning to the radio and talking about some old thing. Anyway, it should be possible to identify the circling death

Also super into complaining about the Baltimore Ravens, being disappointed when they win the Super Bowl, and coming up with absolutely insane statistics to get suicidally despondent about (we were 2-0 when there was a full moon and a girl named Jenny worked at concessions in the stadium, and now we're 2-1! All is lost!). But yeah, dude LOVES birds.

This is it. The final birb. I have no more to share. It has been quite the ride showing off my (now former) roommates bird photography. And I promise you, if he posts more, I will share them. And because you deserve it, here's a link to every bird I have posted. Me and several people are trying to convince Tony to create a book and sell it. His photography is easily as good, if not better, than a lot of bird books I've seen for sale. The Birds of Tony Pagel

These are fantastic, and I second the suggestion of him putting together a book. Perhaps he could figure out a theme to center the photos around (geography, bird behavior, etc), as well as some fascinating bird info, and that would look really nice. I'm trying to improve my own bird photography. If you don't mind my asking, what sort of equipment did your roommate use? It's so hard to justify the price of picking up a nice telephoto lens.

we do the same thing when North American birds get knocked off course, but it's kinda funny seeing a fairly common bird being touted as ultra-rare

I've been watching this Russian lady on youtube lately. From what I can understand from google translate and the odd English-subtitled video, she works as a falconer at the Moscow Domodedovo airport, and she has a pet eagle owl in her apartment because of course she does. It's a very well behaved bird but jesus christ it's loving huge and I just can't get over videos like this one where she comes home to her World of Warcraft gaming rig to find this girl perched on the headrest of the gaming chair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1BmvYbUKgg peep those claws Incredibly fun channel with a whole bunch of various birds and a lot of interesting bird facts, like for example how to force feed a concussed goshawk if it doesn't want to eat (that one is even subtitled in English). Also this viral pop culture phenomenon, plus blooper reel (with subtitles): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W6Py1g4I04 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5W82toaHs8 There's a video where she has to trim the beak on that eagle owl, and well, let's just say she needs some reinforcements to pull it off because the owl does not like it.
