Don't care about the MMA doc, but the Iraqi Dinar episode was the funniest fuckin' thing they've done in ages.

I enjoyed the doc a lot as someone who has been casually interested in MMA for years but never took too deep of a look into it to see how much there is to unpack in its weirdness. What I really want is a doc like this specifically about the Japanese promotions like Pride and K-1 which I always found more fun than UFC outside of the first couple of UFC tournaments which were filled with weird, weird motherfuckers. There were plenty of huge Pride matches and fighters that didn’t get mentioned in the doc.

Check out The Smashing Machine. It's p depressing but it's a good look at an American fighting in Japan. Also features some fuckin gold quotes from Mark Coleman (featured in the doc but only in a minor fashion).

UFC was pretty weird for, say, the first 6 tournaments. I think that was the last time that the premise of the UFC was "Bloodsport but real" and you had guys whose thing was that they did taekwondo or ninjitsu or some made-up martial art. I don't remember exactly when they stopped listing a fighting style along with each fighter's name, height, and weight. Pride was weird because there was a time when it could lay claim to being "the Olympics of MMA," at least in the minds of hardcore fans, but even those same hardcore fans acknowledged that they put on a lot of freakshow fights.

To be frank according to people like Seanbaby (scroll down to his Fred Ettish bit here but its spread around in general on nearly every piece he did regarding fighting), people did earnestly thought that all of the weird nonsense about martial arts was real. Frank Dux did successfully sell his story as being real for years, even with exposes being written as early as 1988.

One artifact from that era that doesn't really exist anymore is wondering if like Chuck Norris could beat up Bruce Lee, if JCVD could actually fight, etc. Because MMA didn't exist yet and kickboxing was never a money sport, so full-contact fighting was a hot mess of small orgs with no mainstream exposure, weird conflicting rules, and no way of acknowledging anything like a world championship. Fred Ettish has a really interesting story, because as it turns out, he wasn't some strip-mall karate teacher who thought he was hot poo poo. I think he was a last-minute replacement for another guy. Travis Fulton vs. Jeremy Bullock, on the other hand...
