I never worked with the F-35, I retired before it finished testing, so I’m only familiar with its capabilities from news reports and wikipedia. So I can’t comment on benefits outside of the normal talking points you’d see. Hell, even if I did know I’m guessing it’d still all be classified.

I remember a story where a dude went to the ER for a crippling tooth ache. He was given a prescription for antibiotics and painkillers. He could only afford one, so he opted for painkillers. He died that same night.

“But if dental is free & accessible no one will have an incentive to brush their teeth or take care of themselves!”

Dental health is loving important and some issues can be absolutely crippling. People often don’t have empathy until they experience it themselves. Never mind it being debt inducing. How many kids did we know in the mil with a hosed up grill because their parents never once took them?

I *almost* had to make that choice in 2012 when I had a tooth split in half. I had 600 dollars to my name, period, and the grand total was like 580 bucks. I had them figure out how much each lidocaine injection costs before they did it.

The only reason I got both antibiotics and painkillers was because the antibiotics were on the essential list and the pharmacist knew I was flat broke, so they were free. I still ended up getting about a third of the painkillers necessary.

Since when did we measure military utility against private economic utility? Quite literally everything in the military could be said to have no economic utility. And that’s perfectly fine.

You don't think that it's a little hosed up that we hem and haw about spending money on keeping citizens in good health (and this could be argued for Natl Defense, it has precedence) while being just A-OK with unlimited military funding with questionable utility to society at large?

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but Medicare and Medicaid are separate things, the former being entirely federally run vs. the latter, which depends upon funding from the states themselves. The emerging Democratic healthcare plank is centered around the expansion of Medicare.

Those idiots double don’t know how the budget works because 1) money can be reassigned after the budget is passed by congressional action and 2) there is a larger pool of money that DoD and healthcare budgets draw from in the first place.

God I hate when people use that argument. It’s so plainly wrong. As if some loving higher power prevents the US from reallocating its own drat money after the budget is authorized and appropriated against.

Except antibiotic overprescription and underuse (not taking the full dose before stopping) is a huge public health risk wrt evolving antibiotic resistant bacteria.

That said, yeah providing cheap access to necessary drugs is awesome and I support it in any way. Just hope people are using the amox responsibly.

My graduate school hosed up my insurance enrollment and I didn't have dental when I thought I did. So I had a filling break and had to get an emergency root canal / crown. All in all it ran about $4500. I was only pulling in about $2k / month after taxes in grad school and had no real savings to speak of. I had to borrow about $1k from a friend just so I could make rent and keep from getting evicted. I spent the next 8 months living on essentially rice and beans etc just to get back to normal and make the rest of the payments. I looked into suing my school but that would have cost more $$$ and with an unsure outcome. I didn't want punitive damages, I just wanted them to fix what they hosed up (did not actually enroll me in the poo poo I was supposed to be enrolled in).

It loving sucked and without a richer friend to bail me out I would have become homeless just because a loving root canal.

I'm not even sure the insurance industry would be that opposed to it, either, since removing the requirement that they cover high risk people would lower their overhead a ton and allow them to focus on selling supplemental insurance.
