The story of the guy who the UK forced to cough up Facebook documents in violation of a US-ordered seal takes a turn for the weird- not only was the app the lawsuit was about really skeevy, but he shouldn't have had the documents in the first place and that appears to have been a serious procedural mistake by his legal team and not even the first one they made in that case. Those lawyers have now withdrawn and his electronics are being seized by the court.

Is that a proper reading of what happened?

I mean, if I’m Putin or Xi, what I really want is an America that’s totally obsessed with its internal cultural struggle and barely functional internationally except for trade. Preferably also in slow economic decline relative to the rest of the world.

That implies tipping the scales in different directions at different times. They’re both culturally conservative authoritarians so it’s not impossible they would vaguely like the alt-right to win the battle for the soul of America, but can’t see how that’s a vital national interest for either of them.

i don't think they acquiesced so much as horribly hosed up (like haveblue said) by letting the CEO have access to the dropbox with the discovery files, which apparently was explicitly against the rules of the protective order they'd signed. seems like the biggest problem is no one knows for sure which specific files the CEO gave parliament - which is probably why the judge issued that extraordinary order to the effect of "Don't open or log into your laptop, phone, or external hard drives at all, give them to a forensic specialist immediately"

anyways this is extremely funny and good, and I hope Damian Collins follows through with his promise to publish the relevant files as soon as they've been properly reviewed and redacted if necessary

Nixon won two terms after losing a presidential election and a race for governor.

Lincoln served one term in the House, two less than Beto. The only reason he was famous at all was his loss to Stephen Douglas for Senate.

One of the biggest things was that he recognized the direction the party was going and campaigned for Goldwater in '64 when most other national Republican figures were distancing themselves from their party's nominee. This gave him credibility and support within the increasingly right-leaning Republican base, and his primary opponents (Nelson Rockerfeller and Ronald Reagan) split the anti-Nixon vote.

e: As to the Presidential election, the Democratic Party was in complete disarray—the Democratic 'Solid South' was breaking apart due to realignment, the most popular candidate (Robert Kennedy) got assassinated in June, and Johnson's pro-war Vice President Hubert Humphery ultimately came out of the convention with the nomination in August over the popular anti-war Eugene McCarthy (In spite of Humphery not even competing in the primaries), resulting in a massive and embarrassing riot at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. When the time for the general election came, Humphery only lost the popular vote by less than a percentage, but got crushed in the electoral college—in part because of the third-party candidacy of the George Wallace/Curtis LeMay (Yes, that LeMay), which carried five states in the previously Democratic South and likely helped flip several more.

Carter Page took a Trump tape to Russia, to play for Sechin, about promising sanctions relief in return for whatever. That's when Rosneft happened. Erovinkin was killed in his car over Christmas 2016, because he had been the broker and was also Steele's source.

We haven't confirmed this yet, but it's a central claim of the Steele dossier and we know how that's looking so far (PTIR).
