IIRC Spanish Flu was called that because they were basically the only ones that reported it. It haopened right after WWI and what great news to tell everyone who suffered casualties for years already. Other countries were absolutely affected by it. The reason it was so deadly, again iirc, was that it was a different type.

Basically, the first flu we get kinda imprints a "how to kill flu!" Thing for your immune system. Problem is that flu isnt a one-type virus, it has multiple. See H1N1. So the body struggles against different viruses like H1N9 or some poo poo. Sometimes it is really bad. So if you have the "how to kill this virus" guide book, great! If not, uh oh.

The people that mainly died during the Spanish Flu were our age. People that were in the sweet spot between the old enough to have gotten a type of flu like the one ripping a part that area, or young enough to have their body "make a guide about how to kill the flu." Everyone else who already had a flu "guidebook" obviously didnt have their book work and they lost their lives sometimes.

poo poo was wild reading about but its been years.

Yeah, Spanish Influenza outbreak started in Oklahoma.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again when it comes to health care costs:

What we currently pay in taxes to fund federal, state, and local health care programs per person is what Australia pays per person for universal health care, plus about half the country having private insurance. We don't need to increase taxes at all in order to get Universal Health Care, unless you assume the current prices for everything is some immutable constant.

Health care vs increased taxes is a false dichotomy that only exists because we lack the political will to implement effective solutions.

Like okay, here's links, all data pulled from OECD health statistics.

Overall per capita Health Care spending, public + private:

https://www.healthsystemtracker.org...alth-u-s-spends

Second graphic down. 2016 PPP dollars.

US: $10,348 per person
Australia: $4,708 per person

Sixth graphic down, % GDP spent on healthcare:

US: 8.5% public, 8.8% private
Australia: 6.5% public, 3.1% private.

GDP per Capita Data:

https://data.oecd.org/gdp/gross-domestic-product-gdp.htm

US GDP: $18,707,189,000,000
Australian GDP: $1,181,218,100,000

Total public spending on healthcare:

US: GDP * % GDP public spending on healthcare = 18,707,189,000,000 * 8.5% = $1,590,111,065,000.

Population:

https://data.oecd.org/pop/population.htm

US: 318,900,000
Australia: 23,500,000

Per capita public spending on healthcare:

US: public spending / population = $1,590,111,065,000 / 318,900,000 =

$4,986.24 per person in the US on health care from taxes.

TOTAL Australian spending per person is $4,708.00. That includes both universal health care, as well as copays, roughly half the population having private insurance as well, etc.

Continental US is roughly the same size as the US, so there are no real differences in geographic scale. Their population is somewhat more urbanized than ours (89.4% Australia, 81.6% US), 22.2% of Australians are immigrants, while only 12.5% of Americans are. Median age is about the same as well (38.1 US, 38.7 Australia).

We don't need to raise taxes to afford universal health care. We are flushing 8.8% of our GDP down the drain for inferior care and incomplete coverage.

fwiw, I just found the video, and from the backlash, I fully expected her to actually think Congress was three chambers or something, and it's not even that. Yeah, "three chambers of government" isn't a thing, but it's pretty clear what she means after she corrects herself, because literally everyone on the political stage has talked about those three partisan "goals" for elections.

I'm in the cautious camp of people hoping she's worth all the adulation she's getting while not fanboying over her, because I'm still shellshocked over the entirety of young people swaying for a dreamy candidate in a heartbeat as long as they're saying what they want to hear, but if THIS is what conservatives want to poo poo on her over, they should maybe spend a minute or two on not getting chaos-dunked on by her constantly.

The immune response gettimg bad enough to have caused permanent lung damage also would have likely caused multiple organ failure as it spread throughout the blood so it was rare if it happened at all since once you cleared that "permanent lung damage" bar you were probably going to end up dead from the hypoxia and organ failure.

Like, even if she doesn't get much accomplished at the actual legislative level, her being popular with the younger voters is a nice way to ensure that the party keeps some pressure back to the left instead of just constantly trying to be the GOP-lite wing.

I was talking about AOC with my wife last night. We aren't swinging from her jock, but are both hopefully that she will be a pivot point in politics, where representatives in government begin working for their constituents, not the party. But was talking about how people keep trying to poo poo on her, and how she gives it back. It drives them nuts that this lil' lady won't bow down to the men folk. The thing that defies my logic is that they attack her looks. I get that she isnt the Aryan Mother Image, but come the gently caress on.

I think a lot of the excitement around AOC is that she seems like the first real millenial politician that has managed to break through into congress. Yeah, you see politicians in their 30s pop up from time to time, but they're always hand-picked hardcore cryptofascist Charlie Kirk types, or silver spoon capitalists groomed from birth and born to rule. I don't recall anyone remotely NORMAL from this generation that hasn't been seriously loving filtered popping up in a major party in the US before.

We have the odd younger greens member in Australia showing up, but they get doxxed so hard by the Murdoch media that anyone with a past gets shamed out. And they don't have any real legislative clout anyway.

That Jacinda Ardern though. The Kiwis have us all over a barrel on this front. :allears:

When she tweeted about a Green New Deal, I kind of got a small crush on AOC more than when she’s just using a stepladder to dunk on CHUDs. I had dreams of that being the way we recovered from the Great Recession- using government funds to spark domestic solar panel manufacturing, paying people to install them on the roofs of residences and office buildings, and pumping cash into renewable energy R&D. If she can rally the Dems into making a huge push for something like that, I’d be so loving amped.
