The right-wing has taken it upon themselves to launch a blog-conspiracy that Che was an open mass murderer under Castro, basing a made-up ideology on spurious quotes that were pulled from thin air, and general anti-communist propaganda.

This is very likely a response to Che being a kind of cultural icon for young socialists in America, and since everything socialists like must be evil, they have to make him evil. Say what you what about Che/Castro/Cuba, there's good and bad to be found there, but the guy wasn't a gleeful murderer, and using him to "shame" AOC is as laughable as a "Pinochet did nothing wrong" shirt.

My mother, a US/UK dual citizen living in the UK, died this summer after having been diagnosed a year earlier with terminal cancer. When she came for the funeral, my American aunt scoffed when I mentioned that I’d have to pay not-insignificant inheritance tax (40% after £450k), and boasted that in the US I wouldn’t have to pay anything as it doesn’t kick in until several million over there.

Obviously, I thought she was a loving idiot, but annoyingly it didn’t occur to me until later to point out that in the year my mum officially had cancer she had had repeated GP and oncologist appointments, a myriad of various scans, a full round of chemotherapy, was started on immunotherapy (which would have cost the NHS £150k a year) though unfortunately had a bad reaction to it and had to stop, three extended stays in hospital, including in her final days time in the intensive care ward, two ambulance call outs, a trip to A&E (the UK equivalent of the ER), home visits from three separate nursing units including one dedicated hospice nurse, home visits from a doctor, a physiotherapist and two different occupational therapists, disabled access handrails and the like installed in her home and a pile of different pills that I had to administer to her every night. (and a partridge in a pear tree).

Her full charge for these services was zero. The only thing we would have had to pay for was a stairlift we were looking into, but she ended up dying before it could be installed. If my mother had had a longer-term chronic illness, the NHS probably would have paid for the stairlift as well.

I think we came off better in the deal.

I was in an accident that nearly killed me and left with a five-year recovery. It was so bad my parents had the DNR talk in the hospital. I broke my pelvis in three places, spinal fractures, skull fractures, 3 broken ribs, collapsed a lung, shattered my sacrum(where all the nerves go through to your legs) and narrowly avoided being paralyzed from the waist down. I had to be put on a respirator because my CO2 levels were rising so high in my brain that I legit when crazy and ripped out my intubation and tried to get out of bed. I was non-weight bearing for an almost a year and had 4 years of physical therapy. I looked at the hospital bill my parents got and if I wasn't insured I would be on the hook over 500K. Even with Insurance, my parents had to pay out a shitton of money. The cause of the accident was me falling asleep at the wheel because in order to make ends meet I had to work 2 jobs and freelance with web-development as a little side benefit of our economic system in America.

Some of my favorite highlights were:
- 12K for a transport ambulance ride to the rehab hospital after my countless surgeries.
- 650 for each IV Saline Bag
- 400 for a lovely neckbrace

This isn't to try to one-up your mom's suffering. Just putting a comparison between the financial burden that her treatment would have cost in the states versus with the NHS. I am sorry for your loss my dude, it is loving rough to lose a family member like that. You should throw those numbers constantly in your aunts face because gently caress her if that's what she brings up as your family undergoes the grueling task of sorting through a loved one's estate.

Yes, allow all these people to just...move elsewhere because everyone has the financial capability to do that. I mean, even if the government gives them reimbursement for their property, let's face it, it will only be a fraction of what its worth and then there is the simple of matter of having to find work elsewhere to support your family. But yeah, abandoning a city is absolutely a more cost-effective solution.
