The issue was that privatization happened in pretty much the most hapzard way possible under at least in part under the guidance of American advisors. I was watching Narcos Mexico while eating THC popcorn and thinking about how crazy it was that at one point there were a group of people willing to lay it all on the line to stop the flow of Mexican marijuana into the United States. A few decades later and you can just walk into a store in some states and buy all kinds of THC products.

Not sure I'd even count it as a gateway since it's worse than a lot of Schedule 1 substances. If we discovered ethanol today, it would be outlawed by the weekend.

No, it's not. Bernie would have to step in to prevent it. Bernie is the ranking member on the budget committee. Bernie would have to specifically give up his position as ranking member in the budget committee to prevent Manchin from taking over.

The person actually stepping aside is Maria Cantwell, who is currently the ranking member but interested in moving to the commerce committee.

People trying to pin this on Bernie are dishonest people pushing a narrative. Schumer could just bypass Manchin. Maria Cantwell could just stay put. Wyden and Stabenow are also ahead and in exactly the same position as Bernie. And yet it is Bernie who is supposed to give up the much more important budget committee to prevent Manchin from taking over.

Wait. Is Tumblr really going to go through with committing business suicide over them not wanting to actually police for child porn like Reddit ended up being forced to do? The porn and adult communities are the only thing left keeping Tumblr going at this point. Just about anyone that actually wanted to use Tumblr for non porn activities moved off to Facebook or Twitter years ago.

Also something i've read that's only rarely getting mentioned in all of this is that LGBT supportive content is apparently being reclassified as "adult". So anyone that comes out as gay or trans has to risk getting banned on the service. Which is pretty frigging awful all around and makes it seem like the CEO or whoever made this decision is just a hilariously awful conservative shithead that would rather burn the business to the ground rather than go after child porn.

Nazi and extreme right wing content I guess?

Though even they won't touch it for the most part since Tumblr is synonymous with the concept of SJW's. Hell, "Tumblr SJW" used to be an insult for those sort of people.

Edit: I still can't stop laughing about how loving stupid this is. Apparently this whole thing is due to them not policing for child porn and Apple throwing a poo poo fit about it (And also adult content in general since Apple is apparently super draconian about that.). So instead of actually hiring someone to handle reviews and the banning of that content like they should have in the first place they're just going to commit social media suicide on a grandiose level by annihilating what communities they have left.

Which means that whoever runs Tumblr at the moment would literally rather burn the business to the ground rather than meet the bare minimum half-assed policing and banning standards that Reddit was forced to adhere too after their lovely chud-esque kiddy porn subgroups got caught out in the light of the press. What's more, they're using this an excuse to go after LGBT community members. What an incredibly lovely business.

While "porn" is the headline here, sex-positive content is the main thing being nuked, with people pointing out the billions of advertising pornbot accounts that don't comply with the rules are still there and the actual communities are gone. Fundamentally, the failing is centralization. We've never found a way to allow people to communicate on the internet without a corporation providing the servers. Be it geocities, myspace, AOL or whoever, the only way to put something out there for the world to see was to rely on someone elses service and their rules, and their obedience to the almighty market.

It has real world-consequences, from facebook's culpability in the myanmar massacres to people left disconnected and unable to contact their former community after google decided to kill off Orkut because they didn't give a poo poo about the South American market. It was one of the top destinations in Brazil but that wasn't enough to keep it around.

While deplatforming is obvious, the lack of a viable place to form a community in the first place is a less visible problem. The one people keep noticing is sex workers, who get purged from everywhere they try to build one. Sexual content in general though, has a really hard time existing in the space between restrictive terms of service and the wastelands of pornography spam. Tumblr's dismissive "You can go elsewhere for porn" is emblematic of that, because you really can't find what existed there anywhere else. Communities formed with discussions, support networks, feedback for artists, but because they allowed adult images to be shared it all has to be burned to the ground. Tumblr itself became an unlikely home (the platform is pretty awful) due to being the last place that hadn't done a purge. I'm not going to speak for the LGBT communities because I don't know enough, but a lot of people have been saying they were hit exceptionally hard.

Which brings up the other thought, that anything remotely related to sex is always under fire, while it takes massive coordinated efforts to get companies to even make token moves against hate speech. Our priorities in what needs to be policed are skewed. Twitter is the prime example for most people here, with obvious jokes earning bans and obvious nazis being protected by jack himself.

Don't forget: Shock Therapy created the oligarchs that became Putin's backers.
