Yes. It's loving obvious that with development birthrate drops. The problem isn't 'the church,' it's imperialism intentionally underdeveloping Africa. Anyone talking about population control in Africa without talking about Africa's development is loving racist.

I’m getting bored of stringing you along so all I’ll say is that you could be spending your time and mental energy on more productive things as pertains to the subject of climate change. The material reality we’re facing is so enormously hosed that going after someone like David Attenborough is a complete and utter waste of time.

It's incredibly frustrating, especially since I'd always heard growing up in the mountains the rumours, true or not that the US offered to run a tunnel from the foot of the mountains to Lithgow for munitions during WWII.

Also surely if handled correctly like the NBN should have been where we should have been built from the cities out so you don't build lost revenue poo poo like setting up Armidale first. You'd run the Melb-Can-Syd leg first (Melb-Syd being the 2nd business air route in the world) the business case should be there to build it but welp are Qantas so you can't even start there and expand. Not to mention if you made central coast to Syd a 20 minute train trip you start to take the pressure off the outer rim suburbs and inner city living looses its appeal when you can have space and not take more than 70 minutes to get into town.

I guess what I am saying is Shorten needs to go full Xi and just get poo poo done. Nationalise everthing!

When faced between a tax cut and a visionary piece of infrastructure, cuts will win every time. We can barely roll out a nobrainer 21st century telco network , an actual modern transport network? gently caress that, I'd have to pay tax.

And we still dont have a dual carriageway over the blue mountains.

I now dream of a tunnel to Woy Woy, hopefully emerging in Woy Woy South so nothing of value would be lost.

Not to mention TunnelCo or whatever entity it inevitibly gets spun into wont be directly profitable for decades. Sure, it will probably bring pervasive social and economic benefits wherever it goes, but TunnelCo wont be getting any of that so the project is no good.

We didn't 'barely' roll out poo poo

There are vast swaths of the NBN that aren't fit for purpose and a huge amount still isn't built, despite the libs claiming it would be done by next year. The ALP will be able to fix the FTTC stuff fairly easily, but the VDSL and HFC based segments of the network may as well have not been done.

My internet used to go out whenever it rained. NBN came along to a point up the street. Still goes out frequently when it rains. Roughly every year it will just go bad and start dropping out for hours at a time randomly, multiple times a day. When you finally get through restarting the modem and all that other stuff on the tech help lines, eventually a technician will be booked. Apparently telstra owns the line though so they always have to get them to come out, and eventually they do, and do... something, somewhere. The problem is normally resolved at this point for a year or so.

NBN was meant to fix this kind of poo poo though, but I've had to deal with it since 2006 and i've just resigned myself to lovely internet.

Granted, I've only been on the basic NBN tier but my speeds didn't change significantly from the ADSL2+ to NBN VDSL, still varying from between 2 to 8mbps which is about the same I got before.

Well remember when Campbell Newman told Julia Gillard to gently caress off because Brisbane will build its OWN NBN.

Years later a large section of the inner city is TPG exclusive.

All apartment blocks in some inner suburbs, you can only pick TPG because they did a deal with old Camps back in the day to build Fibre to the Basement for apartments in Brisbane. The result is you can't choose an ISP if you live in one of these areas.

It would be about that bad.

Also good luck with any troubleshooting because theres a lot of places things can go wrong, your isp and nbn co won't work together and the whole project is underfunded.

Hair Elf
I saw this article, but I had to dig around to find the actual Saxo 2019 predictions. Spoiler It's internal fluff to promote their investment bank.

quote:

The debt-fuelled surge in Aussie house prices has led to one the longest rallies in the world, with prices gaining a monstrous 6,556% (373% after adjusting for inflation) since 1961. The “Australian Dream” was financed through an epic accumulation of debt as interest rates collapsed, with household debt standing at 189% of disposable income.

The Great Financial Crisis was responsible for deflating housing bubbles in other advanced economies, but not in Australia. In a bid to stave off the crisis’ effects, Canberra’s “economic security package” further fuelled the spectacular run-up in leverage, kicking the proverbial can down the road.

In 2019, the curtains close on Australia’s property binge in a catastrophic shutdown driven most prominently by plummeting credit growth. In the aftermath of the Royal Commission, all that is left of the banks is a frozen lending business and an overleveraged, overvalued mortgage-backed property ledger and banks are forced to further tighten the screws on lending.

The confluence of dramatic restrictions in credit growth, oversupply, government filibusters and a slowdown in global growth cement the doom loop ; property prices Down Under crashing by 50%.

Australia falls into recession for the first time in 27 years as the plunge in property prices destroys household wealth and consumer spending. The bust also contributes to a sharp decline in residential investment. GDP tumbles.

The blowout in bad debt squeezes margins and craters profits. The banks’ exposure is too great for them to cover independently and to skirt the risk of insolvencies and collapse, the RBA moves in to purchase securitised mortgages and fund the government’s recapitalisation of its major banks with a whopping AUD 300 billion QE/TARP programme.

The grand irony is that Governor Lowe’s hand is forced toward unconventional monetary policy and he implements QE1 Down Under. With the banks at the forefront of financial stability they are deemed “too big to fail”, not least because Australia’s baby boomers and superannuation investment pools rely heavily on the banks’ consistent dividend yields.

I'm guessing the takeaway from this is "Stop investigating banks in Australia or in the worst case it'll cost you $10,000 / person to get out of it". I also like how they use phrases like "government filibusters" when they could have used "inaction" or some other non-seppo phrase.

BTW, to give you an idea of their position, here is one of their worst case scenarios from 2018, thinking that somehow those dreaded millenials will outvote the rest of the population, and install an actual left-wing Democratic party in the US.

quote:

US Voters go Hard left in 2018 election

Changing demographics in the US which already have the under-35 millennials in place as a larger cohort than the post-war baby boomers will have a dramatic impact on politics in 2018.One outcome will be a spiralling public deficit.

Much has been made of the Trump brand of populism. But let’s not forget the Bernie Sanders revolution that was nearly as popular and was only short-circuited by the Clinton political machine in the 2016 primaries.

In 2018, populism on both sides won’t be denied and the US mid-term elections see a hard turn left as a strong majority go all-in for European-inspired democratic socialism, the largest political earthquake in a generation. As Trump’s former strategist Steve Bannon stated in a 60 Minutes interview on the political lay of the land: “the only question before us is whether it’s going to be a left-wing populism or a right-wing populism… and that is the question that will be answered in 2020.”

We agree, except that it is already crunch time in 2018 and the Democrats easily take back both houses of Congress. The future of any country is in its younger generation, and the under-35 millennials are now American’s largest generation, larger even than the vaunted baby boomers. They also wear a very different set of political stripes as they showed
in a groundswell of support for social democrat Bernie Sanders in 2016.

The general revulsion of younger voters for Trump’s persona, the widening inequality gap aggravated even further by the Republicans’ cynical tax reform, and a new breed of Democratic candidates who are unafraid to tap into Sanders-style populism from the left see millennials turning out in droves at the polls in November.

The Democrats pull the debate away from tax reform to spending stimulus for the masses. True populism means breaking out the chequebook for the 90%, and that means fiscal stimulus, deficits be damned. US 30-year Treasury yields rip beyond 5%
