Tips up. Who flips their skis upside down to put them on their shoulders?

Yeah I'm getting pretty desperate. we're about two weeks into xc season here and they've finally started setting classic tracks. I'm doing a 50k race in late january on skate skis and am so so hosed. I did the 24k version last year on about as much total prep as I've done in the past 10 days and it was fun and I only cramped on a hill and stopped four people dead behind me once, so why not do the full distance? my big takeaway so far with this sport is that skating is a ritualistic act of self-embarrassment via lungs, legs, coordination, and fashion.

It's starts with 230 m climb over 5k, at present a 20 m climb knocks all the air out of me for a good few minutes. Hope to build some technique and endurance before then. The real answer is to carry them with love. If not on a backpack it is tips down, front of binding behind shoulder. The only way. Like Bawfuls posted. E: yes I am that lazy from the gondola to parking lot at keystone... spwrozek fucked around with this message at 22:15 on Dec 5, 2018 |

bawfuls posted:If you carry with tips forward and the front of the front binding just behind your shoulder, the skis will balance well at a steeper angle (so tips down tails up) which gets the tails up and away from people's heads and makes it easier/safer to maneuver in crowded areas. They are still angled up and they are easier and takes up less space removing them from your shoulder. I feel like removing your tip down skis from your shoulder means you either flipping them down your back or over your shoulder. Carry your skis like you ski: tips up

We simply don't have that kind of terrain around here, but plenty of punchy rolling hills. The race I'm doing is the Noquemanon in Marquette, Michigan. The half version is rad because it's net ~900ft/250m of sometimes terrifying descending but the first half has a lot of sharp up and down: My wife and I were going to do the American Birkebiener this year in wisconsin but we have a ski patrol exam that weekend. I was pit crew for her last year and it's an insane amount of people that show up, like 10,000+ racers. Just a constant steady stream for hours and hours on end.

Has anyone skied the alps? I'm curious what the border crossing is like from Germany to Austria. Like, I'm wondering if I should stay in a place that is in Austria and ski in Germany or if that will be a pain in the rear end. Something something Eagle's Nest, something something James Bond goggles.

I haven't crossed that border in particular, but I'm assuming they're both schengen and just... Don't have borders.
