White was delayed because Loeb and Sale were having a tiff and Loeb clearly didn't give a poo poo by the time they patched things up.

It depends on what you're looking for. It's not really in the same vein as Claremont or Davis Excalibur. It's a bit closer to what I have read of Planetary. It's not bad, but it's not my favourite.

It's a bright spot in latter-day Excalibur, though that's damning with faint praise a bit. I wouldn't go out of your way to read it but if you're looking to muck around in the blind alleys of post-Davis Excalibur, it's a good little run to check out.

That book went some weird places after Davis leaves. There the bits where it's holding close to the other X-books and then sometimes it reads like it was never touched by an editor before publication.

People were talking a lot about whether or not Terry Long or Kenny Kong or whomever were Mary Sue/Self-Inserts but if you want an idea of how early Warren Ellis work for hire went:

Excalibur: His first act was to add a hard-bitten, hard-drinking, chain-smoking, caustic Essex man named Warren Ellis Pete Wisdom to the team, who thinks superheroes are stupid and seduces and beds Kitty Pryde within a few issues.

Thor: Much of the story centers around a hard-bitten, hard-drinking, chain-smoking, caustic Englishman named Warren Ellis Curzon working for the NYPD to figure out why Thor is being all dark and not wearing his stupid outfit or talking in his stupid way anymore.

The twist in Hellstorm is that the lead character wasn't British, he was just a hard-drinking/chain-smoking rear end in a top hat who thought superheroes were dumb and stupid and childish and had a really hot industrial/goth girlfriend.

In Ultraforce, the twist was that it was an older hardcore cool dude who all of the chicks loved, like Jarvis except more badass.

In Doom 2099 the twist was that basically all of the characters that weren't Doom were this.

Stuff like this is the reason why I found it fascinating that Castlevania s2 treats being a Warren Ellis archetype as a state of being emotionally stunted that the protagonist needs to grow out of by helping people

That was probably me, it's a gem from an old interview:

quote:

I called Bob Harras and said, “Excalibur #90, Kitty Pryde gets hosed.” He went deadly silent, then he said, “Just try and keep it tasteful.”

There is another great Ellis quote from the middle 1990s where he poo poo all over the concept of computers because REAL FUCKIN' MEN write on typewriters, can you imagine goddamn Ernest Hemingway pecking away at a "Mac"? Show Charles Bukowski as "word proccessor" and he'd crack a loving lager bottle over your skull. Don't trust computers! TYPEWRITERS OR BUST!"

Obviously Ellis's views have evolved on that topic, and I imagine they've evolved on how wonderful it would be to live life as a more cartoonish version of John Constantine. Though the computers remembered, which is assume why he lost all his work on all of those projects that never finished/got severely delayed over the course of a decade or so.

The Wild Storm is up to issue 18 of a projected 24 issue run.

Two of his creator-owned books at Image (Injection and Trees) hit 15 and 14 issues respectively over the course of a couple of years, no idea if they're done or just delayed at this point, neither has had a new issue in over a year.

His James Bond comic (which hinges largely upon the definition of "Eidolon" being a big dramatic reveal) ran for twelve issues.

There we go.

Too bad Injection died on the vine, I got the sense Shalvey thought this was going to be his breakout work ala Saga and bailed on the gigs Moon Knight would have got him and has just kind of been around in the meantime.

According to Ellis's newsletter, it's because Jordie Bellaire's Redlands ended up being more popular than expected, so her time's been at a premium, and Shalvey ended up on a signing tour that's taken up a lot of his year. Shalvey's also done a lot of incidental work for Marvel in the meantime, like the Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan mini.

As a result, the between-arcs break they'd always planned on ended up extending to the entirety of 2018, and they're planning to finish Injection in 2019.

gently caress yeah, Belit is awesome! Reading the original Howard stories, there's a lot less misogyny than you'd expect from the genre and especially the time period. The stories where Conan is part of her crew are pretty interesting. The crew is all men and they all follow her orders without any compunction, even Conan who actually respects her. The crew is either mixed or all black, which would be cool as well, but one of these stories takes place in Hyperborean Africa where there are literal monstrous dark skinned cannibal ape-men. So, that kind of ruins things.
