Honestly - his mom sounds kinda dumb if you listen to some of the times she has been interviewed. Having said that, he was apparently abusive towards her too - it sounds like she was in hell behind closed doors:

http://time.com/4898485/james-alex-fields-jr-mother-charlottesville-protest-driver/

quote:

As officials try to make sense of the violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., the mother of the man who allegedly plowed his car through a crowd of counter-protesters is also trying to understand her son’s actions.

In an interview late Saturday, Samantha Bloom told the Associated Press that she knew her son, James Alex Fields Jr., was attending a rally in Virginia, but didn’t know it was connected to white nationalists.

“I thought it had something to do with Trump. Trump’s not a white supremacist,” she said.

“He had an African-American friend so,” she added, trailing off.

“I told him to be careful,” Bloom told the Toledo Blade. “[And] if they’re going to rally to make sure he’s doing it peacefully.”

Fields Jr., 20, was arrested Saturday and currently faces numerous charges including second-degree murder after he allegedly barreled a car through a group of counter-protesters Saturday afternoon, killing one woman and injuring 19 others.

Separately, a Virginia state police helicopter linked to the violent rally crashed in Charlottesville late Saturday, killing two officers on board, officials told the AP.

I'd have to check the federaliat papers but my guesses would be

1) you cant trust young people to have shown their character yet

2) Young folks have less experience

3) you don't want somebody's kid getting the job for dynastic reasons (ie President Chelsea)

In more modern rationales, anyone under 35 making a bid for president is a lot more likely to be a Kennedy or Clinton or Bush than they are to be named Cortez. I think removing the retstriction would be more likely to aid elites rather than otherwise.

Hell, there's a granddaughter of President Hoover who I see on talk shows and Colbert every so often. She's made a career out of being Hoover's granddaughter, with no other real qualifications.

I know a woman who retired making 12.50/hr after 25 years with a company but had a decent chunk in her 401k because she put away 5-10$ a pay period for a long time. So she has some funds to couple with social security in retirement. This isn’t a unique story.

It also doesnt help that most of these guys are getting radicalized on the internet, and unless you are Too Online like we are it's hard to understand how or why. The age restriction exists because despite what the young want to believe there is a general correlation between age, experience and maturity. Sure it's not uniform some younger people are more mature and experienced than older and as the Orange Traitor clearly demonstrates age does not guarantee maturity. But the age restrictions exist for the same reason that age restrictions exist for most privileges. The reason the age of consent for example is older than the age of sexual maturity is because as a society we recognize that there are real differences in the cognitive abilities of children and adults and that just because a childs body has developed secondary sex characteristics does not mean that they have the emotional maturity and experience to avoid blatant manipulation by older more experienced predators.

It's also unlikely to change, because the only people who really oppose the restriction are people under the age of restriction and young people don't vote. It's kind of like how most children complain about school and insist that once they're of age they'll totally right that injustice only to become adults and parents and be like "noop that's the way it needs to be" when their own children say it to them.
