when a migrant does a crime media outlets will inform you that it was a migrant who did the crime. that's pretty much the totality of it. if someone is predisposed to race hate, that story will sear onto their very smooth brain like a cattle brand, to the exclusion of all other crime stories.

In Bernier/PPC news, donations to his party are only tax deductible after they nominate a candidate for one of the upcoming by-elections, and coincidentally the last by-election was held four days before they would have been able to run a candidate and get status. Presumably no by-elections will be called before the new year to reduce their funding, given that the PMO likely feels little need to screw with the Conservatives that extra bit with their current lead in the polls. (Outrement must be called by Jan 30). I'd been contemplating a 2x199 donation to PPC in 2018 to encourage the vote split between them and CPC so I've paid a little bit of attention to this.

Seriously, it's dumb. Support something positive. Even if everything works out like you think it will, you're just giving more leverage to them when they eventually look to join up with the CPC. You're also giving them more resources to get their message out.

jfood posted:when a migrant does a crime media outlets will inform you that it was a migrant who did the crime. There was a good example of this in Ottawa I point to from time to time. Ezra Levant once retweeted an article from a local outlet, probably the Citizen, several years ago about a rumble in downtown Ottawa. It was on a stretch of Rideau Street that is, locally, well known to be sketchy, and involved known gang members fighting over drugs, according to the cops. But because charges were laid against a guy named "Mohammed", Levant called it a "mass Muslim stabbing steps from Parliament Hill." Like, layers of bullshit. The article didn't even get into any other kind of identifiers beyond the name released by the cops. No evidence of the accused being immigrants or even their level of religious devotion, but none of that matters if you're peddling hate. It's the same thing with this article and "the daily shootings." Shootings are nowhere near daily in Ottawa. There have been about 75 so far this year, and only half of them have even resulted in injury. 14 or 15 murders and again, only about half of THOSE were gun deaths, I think. I think the last truly random homicide in Ottawa was Nathan Cirillo in 2014. Just about everyone else had a relationship of some kind with their killer. Ottawa is still incredibly safe, by just about any metric, no matter how many immigrants live here. Doubly frustrating is the dozens of comments that assert the exact opposite, that the media is not explaining the problem of communist antifa and painting people who are against the factually incorrect things you stated as white supremacists. They are against this thing that isn't actually happening, and telling them they're wrong is taking away their rights. Like, these people live in an alternate reality where Justin Trudeau is some all-powerful God who has completely destroyed Canada, flooded it with Muslim terrorists, taken away everyone's rights, and single-handedly crashed the price of oil himself.

If you Bernier were to suddenly turn heel and join the CPC it would be career suicide for him and his grift would be up. Giving more resources to a negative group isn't helpful. You're not moving resources between the two groups you don't like. You're throwing in new resources they wouldn't have. Plus, even if you're splitting the voice, you're amplifying the worst part of it. Don't help normalize nationalists. Also, if Bernier gets a power block large enough to be inconvenient, the CPC would definitely talk about merging them back in. If recent Canadian history is any measure, splits to the right can easily pull the conventional right leaning party further in that direction either by trying to regain that ground or by merging with the further right party and openly taking up their platforms points. Supporting the party pushing further right is not a loving good idea. This is definitely a case of trying to out-think a lovely situation and then missing the forest for the trees. T.C. posted:Amplifying lovely ideas and allowing them to be normalized is actually bad. Yeah it's not like conservatism in general doesn't already have a history of splitting off its most radical elements then reabsorbing them when it turns out they're popular with the electorate. That's why the current CPC is basically being run by former Reform people despite the fact that the Progressive Conservatives vastly outnumbered them. Going "I'll donate to them to split the vote!" is just some kind of N-dimensional chess that's more likely to backfire by just empowering the fringe enough that the mainstream party invites them back in to lead. Bear in mind that Bernier JUST BARELY lost the leadership vote to Scheer, and it's not like everyone who supported him split off the main party when he left. Plenty of "moderate" conservatives would be willing to back him if they think he'd win them an election. If you want to oppose the conservatives, you don't fund the nazis. You fund the socialists.

The other thing about donating to Conservatives is that you have literally no control or influence here. If you're really determined to have the Conservatives gently caress themselves over, it'd involve infiltrating them and rising to a level of power and/or influence that'd give you the levers you can use to gently caress them over. Donating money to them and then patting yourself on the back is even more low-effort than voting against Conservatives.

Assuming Bernier's party helps cost the Conservatives the next election that will just be a big flashing signal for the Conservatives that they need to get more racist, and all else being equal there is a pretty good chance we will have another Conservative government in Ottawa in the next ten years regardless of their platform so inciting them to give more aid and comfort to their anti-immigrant wing is incredibly short sighted. We're already seeing Scheer playing footsy on these issues it boggles my mind anyone would want to encourage that further.

In what world do you think that adding to the warchests of the racist, populist Right is not going to backfire? Donating to left leaning parties is never going to bring the liberals to the left because they do not see them as where their votes are. The Liberals are always chasing the mystical centre ground of politics, and will never look left. Conservative parties, on the other hand, are more than willing to look right because that's where they see their grassroots. To imply otherwise shows a gross misunderstanding of contemporary politics.

Does anyone really think that we're not going to be getting a Conservative government again pretty soon? I can see the weird gross creep they've got in charge now losing to the pretty face on an empty suit that the Liberals have in charge, but I certainly don't imagine that the Liberals are going to stay in power the election after that when the Conservatives get their poo poo in order and the NDP put an even more boring worthless centrist in charge than the one they have now. There's going to be a lot of hand-wringing and complaining about how bad it is that we've elected our own petty facist with the mind of a child and how mad we all are about the NDP doing nothing to prevent it, but I seriously doubt that anyone is going to take any meaningful action to prevent it from happening.
