Since I couldn't recall whether or not "we didn't know about concussions until 2007" nonsense was part of the Post-Benoit Media Blitz, I went with Developmental abuse, because that's something that just scars up-and-comers for basically no gain.

I went with the wellness scandal.

The developmental thing was really really bad, but I feel like lovely trainers isn't exactly a rare thing (not that this justifies anything) and it seems that it's mostly been fixed since then.

With the wellness, there was the huge issue in the 90s, then this happens post-Benoit and they continue to not take it seriously to this day. The testing was set up to get around the issue as much as possible without outright ignoring it. They bend over backward to try to help anyone they like who might be at risk. The tests haven't been modernized to account for new forms of juicing. They don't care at all and came up with this bullshit program to try to absolve themselves and it doesn't actually help anyone or anything.

Basically, they're both really bad but one has kinda been remedied and one hasn't so I'm voting for the one that hasn't been.

The whole Chris Nowinski thing brought this to light a few years earlier. WWE's working style at the time definitely contributed to Benoit's brain condition, but the damage had been done years before they ever employed him. IIRC the wellness propaganda was WWE's response to the media latching onto the completely bullshit "roid rage" narrative in the Benoit murders, so WWE is kinda-sorta-almost-if-you-squint-really-hard justified for that one.

Voted the Demott thing. Trainees for this industry already have it tough, and are in a zero-power position where they can't speak up (unless they were released and didn't care about burning bridges like Judas Devlin). So the relentless abuse/harassment/hazing on top of that is super egregious, especially when they had long been in the midst of an anti-bullying campaign.

Demott’s behavior is what I expect from some $5k and maybe you’ll get to job to a C tier indie act school. Certainly not something from a big corporate operation that’s desperately seeking its next breakout act.

reminder that there is a very good chance that a lot of talent that got injured and had to retire early in their careers, like Richie Steamboat, had to because of Hugh Morris' awful treatment of injured trainees. There was talk that he had Rusev punished and doing strenuous activities with a broken neck right after he came back

Developmental wins out for me cause it was a constant state of abuse of people that wanted to be in WWE. Plus they also had they nerve (and still do) of calling WWE a safer style despite that fact. The Benoit post media is bad but typical evil company bad

the only issue i have with the bracket is the Warrior Award and Unleash Your Warrior feel like the same exact thing. Both lionizing a piece of poo poo and putting his name on things that he actually didn't care for as some sort of motivational aspect.

Warrior award in a walk.
Just Gods, say what you will about Hogan, at least he got 'suspended' for his bullshit. Warrior's been lionized for even worse behavior.

Rename it the Bruno Award please.
Just, loving hell.

It's really funny when you go on r/squaredcircle around HOF time because there'll be a lot of people who are mad about the Warrior award, but for all the wrong reasons. They're mad that Warrior's dumb wish for the award to go to cameramen or some poo poo wasn't respected, not that theres an award dedicated to a Literal White Supremacist.

it's because everyone on reddit is, themselves, a white supremacist

Warrior Award is an easy pick because of how horrible he was and how he gets lionized without any amount of contrition. All it took was dying. Couple that with the fact that we have to hear how great he was on a yearly basis and the one-time shittiness of Billy and Chuck pales in comparison. Plus, if I remember right, Billy and Chuck had at least turned face by the engagement so we were supposed to root for their marriage (until the ending made it all so, so stupid).

I think it's even worse because before warrior came back, the WWE made that hit piece DVD about him and then made him into a martyr once he died

So they're double hypocrites

No, the marriage was intended to generate heel heat. They turned face by saying it was all a publicity stunt and they weren’t gay. Then Rico turned on them.

Nah, that DVD could be considered a disgusting tactic. Guy refuses to come back and work with us? gently caress him, we'll spend time and money manufacturing a documentary that rips on him.

It was one of the reasons Bret came back to due his DVD, despite the bad blood, because he knew Vince would do the same to him.

The more I think about the developmental abuse the more it becomes clear the company will never change. Trainees were sexually harassed, assaulted, bullied, subject to racist and homophobic slurs and most of the trainers are still there. HHH has more power than ever. He hired the guy in charge of it and let everyone off who covered it up. In any real company all those loving trainers would be gone.

Most of the offense people have with WWE practices have very little to do with the actual practice. It's that it can be used against a person they already don't like. Just look at the initial Benoit reaction, a ton of people insisted that Benoit couldn't have murdered his family...because he was a good pro wrestler.

I also recall them getting over as comedy faces before the wedding thing. Fans got behind it because they were just blatantly aping the Ambiguously Gay Duo from SNL, which was sort of popular at the time.

Would you be my new best friends?

I really had high hopes at the time that the "gag" they were going for was that Billy and Chuck were just incredibly blind to the fact that people thought they were gay, because they were the best of friends who also weren't afraid to show affection to each other. Maybe not the best/most progressive angle, but certainly better than the terrible ending which turned out to be,"No no we were totally aware and actively pretending to be gay but we're totally straight and going into full on gay-panic mode now."

I voted steroids because of how many deaths can be at least partially attributed to a company culture of steroid abuse and having the boss directly involved in the distribution is tough to beat. I feel bad not voting for Tiger though because a lot of the racist entries have been matched up with just insanely repugnant and wipespread practices.

Gumball Gumption

I went with Tiger. The steroids are bad but is a weird systemic issue. Tiger is a case of the company making GBS threads on one person a bunch of times for no good reason.

The Steroids win for me cause they were openly encouraging them and not just to heal injuries but also to get talent to bulk up. Also cause the death rate in the 90's and early 00's was due to steroids
